Intro and a dress question
Aug. 22nd, 2006 12:51 amSo, first off, I'd like to say what a wonderful resource this community is! I just stumbled on to you guys a couple of days ago, and already my mind is racing with ideas. If only I could win the lottery so my crafty dreams could come true... Anyway... A little background on me: When I was little, I used to do crafts with my mom (painting ceramics and little wooden things mostly) and when I got older, she taught me counted cross stitch. I grew up, got married, had a kid, yadda yadda... I've only made a couple of things (a really simplistic tiger costume for the kid [actually it was only a vest and a hat that tied around the chin, but it was flippin cute. I'll have to see if I have pics] and I made some bumper pads for his crib). I'm in the works to buy my mom's sewing machine off of her because she's used it less than I have. And other than that, I've only done small hand sewing things.
Sooo... After all that, I have a question! I have a wedding to attend in late October. Semi-formal dress (standard I suppose) and it is a day wedding. And since shopping for clothes frustrates me to tears (I can never find anything that fits, things are too expensive, etc), I thought I'd try my hand at making myself a dress! Woo!...I'm a little daunted though. I found a pattern/tutorial at craftster for a halter dress that I want to try with a few modifications. I'd like to use satin (to make it more fancy) and I'd like to lengthen the straps so that they cross over my back and connect to the back of the dress. I'd probably also make the skirt a little longer. Anyway, I'm good on measurements and figuring out seam allowances and how much material I'd need total... My question is regarding satin. Is there a specific/special way to sew it? Will I need a lining for the dress? And, any suggestions you might have for me would be awesome!
It's good there's a place for us crafty dorks, er, I mean geniuses to get together and share info!

Aug. 22nd, 2006 08:21 amI survived.
But just barely?
My days at the Arlington County Fair are behind me and I feel good, no, GREAT about the whole experience.
A few pics of my booth are behind the cut.
( I'm your booth bitch. )
And here is what I did in between the customer/browser rushes:

a few crafty questions.
Aug. 22nd, 2006 08:36 amHi all,
1. ETSY. I just opened a shop there a couple of weeks ago, and while I seem to be getting traffic, I've had no sales. I've looked around at other users' shops which are chock full of great items, and see that they've really not sold much either. And then occassionally I happen upon a decently cute shop that has sold THOUSANDS of items. What's that about? I'm almost beginning to wonder if most of the traffic on Etsy is crafters looking at each other's things, and very few shoppers. I haven't been there long, though, so we'll see.
2. So failing Etsy, where are your preferred places to sell? I'm going to test out Ebay shortly, but I've never really sold things on there so I'm not sure how best to advertise myself.
3. Craft fairs and county fairs. I think it would be fun to rent a space and sell my things in person at a fair, but I'd probably only ever have about 30 pieces to offer, and I just wonder if that would make it pointless. I'm also concerned that I might not sell enough of my stuff to cover the vendor fees! Do those of you who've sold at fairs find that people are eager to buy, or does perfectly good stuff just sit and rot on the table? I know that's highly specific to what you're selling.
Thanks!

Aug. 22nd, 2006 10:54 amMy batteries are dead...booo @ that.
But, I just wanted to let you all know I did something crafty this weekend. We went to Ikea in philly and they were having a kick ass summer clearance sale. We got 4 table clothes, fabric ones, beautiful light green with white flowers and pink with white flowers for $4!!!!!!!! Total. $1 each. And they were huge. Soooo, we decided to take one of the green ones and use the m to recover the dinningroom chairs. It was our first time doing it, but after many of times seeing it done on HGTV we figured it out and they look AWESOME! Sooo much better then before. I'm going ot use another table cloth for matching curtains and a table runner. I think I will do that today.
Question though...how wide should a table runner be? Should it be like 1/3 as wide as the table iteself? I have no idea. Also whats a good stitch for the edge that looks nice but will hold better then a straight stitch? I will be using the sewing machine and it has a bunch of different stitches on it and I have no clue whats appropriate for a table runner.
Also.....sorry for the questions.....but can this method work to stiffin fabric...spray adhesive? Like, spray it down and let it dry? In my head it will work, but theoretically...I have no idea. I have a full can with no use for it. I don't scrapbook anymore...though I should...and I need to make a couple totes but can't afford the extra fabric to put between the layers to make it thicker/sterdier. Thoughts?
And I will have photos asap of the chairs. I'm VERY proud of them.

easy corchet project
Aug. 22nd, 2006 11:11 ami've just gotten the crochet thing down, after being a knitting elitist. i hate counting stiches, so it took me a while to be able to make things without adding or losing stiches. this was a good scarf-level project.

i married the right man
Aug. 22nd, 2006 11:58 ami use overlock thread for my sewing machines instead of regular spooled thread because it's cheaper and more likely to be of better quality. well, i cant exactly put those huge cones up on top of my sewing machine and expect to sew...so i started shopping for a thread stand. i told my husband about it and to my delight he said "pff! i can make that." better yet, he kept his promise. we went shopping for supplies and he made one even better than the one i was hoping to buy.
( here are multiple shots )
my question is, what to paint it? i'm a big fan of natural wood stains, but i think this piece in particular needs more color than that. i'm afraid of it looking tacky..oh, i'm stuck. i havent even bothered to sand it down yet. any suggestions?

but now, what to do with them??
i have alot of black and grey, 2 differnet colours of pink, and some red.
any suggestons would be welcome!

Aug. 22nd, 2006 02:43 pmWhat happens when you have a pair of raver pants, some reflective yarn, an ungodly quantity of purple sort-of leopard Funfur, some of the most beautiful/hideous spandex known to man, some spray adhesive, and an overworked serger?
Fur coat for Burning Man, a reflective scarf, and a laptop bag that actually does the trick.
I think I paint glittery black stripes on the turned down collar, and then I put a 6"-12"hem of black, and a black fur backpatch? I dunno... what do ya think?

Aug. 22nd, 2006 03:57 pmYay! After only one crochet project, I taught myself how to make a granny square!
This site is AMAZINGLY HELPFUL if you are learning how to crochet like I am, the granny square tutorial comes with step by step pictures! It's a great resource.

flower pot
Aug. 22nd, 2006 04:26 pmover the course of the summer my husband and i have aquired quite a few flower pots that look similar to this:

except in blue, yellow, green shades (which match nicely with the colors in our living room and throughout our home) ... ive looked all through memories but i cant find anything to do with them now that the summer is gone and the flowers are about to die. the only problem however, is that our cat eats all the plants we put in them, so id like to think of something simple but nice to use them for. any ideas are really appreciated! thanks!

The coast is clear...(story time)
Aug. 22nd, 2006 04:42 pmI woke up Saturday morning (to me 12 is still morning) and found that my neighbor was having a yard sale. My sister spied from slits in the curtains (we just moved in not so recently and don't know anyone that well yet) a sewing machine!! I snatched it up since I was really contemplating buying the cheapie kind from Walmart, and I am really just going to be teaching myself how to sew. It was marked $35, but she gave it to me for 25...SCORE! And I was willing to pay that before I realized that it is the nifty kind that folds away into its own table. So I got a sewing machine and a new piece of furniture! THEN. I quickly took pictures and was ready to post my booty when to my dismay
mustbe_monsters had just posted her brand new fancy machine. D:
No harm done. It was really fancy and cool. But, it put my dusty antique to shame. Yes that is a screw driiver holding the thread on. ;)

Now that that post has gone down a page I am confident enough to post mine. Hahah. And after much googling and a trip to Walmart to buy essentials, like needles and bobbins, I present

Roller stamps?
Aug. 22nd, 2006 05:06 pmI could swear I've seen these before, but I can't find them now. The closest I could find is this. I swear I can remember roller stamp type things that would let you roll out a zigzag line, a line of hearts, etc. Does anyone know what I'm talking about and or where I could find these? I'd particularly love a zigzag one because I want to start making patterns to sell, and one of my pet peeves with commercial patterns is how they never mention how or why or where you're supposed to finish seam edges with an overlock or zigzag stitch. I'd like to roll a zigzag line along where the zigzag stitching should be.

"Hope is a passage, if you have enough room in your heart for glows,
empathy and mysteries you might possess the right brush to paint that
special way. Bird are gifts of hope they can open the alley to all
those possibilities you've denied by closing your eyes on your most
precious possession."

To be true Sweet Madness can't be teach she only can be offered. She is contagious but in this antique booklet you wont find any miracle recipes. The sweet Madness has a innate property ,she emates from a soul to link her for ever to her very own fantasy, to her marvelous path, made of a creative freedom, kind of bohemian and chimerical.
You cannot learn sweet madness.
She is kind of a life philosophy ,a decision to take. she contaminates through laughters and can be blown into thanks to art, thanks to the magic of colors.
Sweet Madness is not at all a miraculous remedy to all your worries nor a sect.
But she is an apeasing alley ,rapturous where we cease to hinder/fetter our incongruous and whimsical thoughts.
The Sweet madness is not even an escape to reality. She is on the contrary an emphasis of the treatrum mundis a deus ex machina to our commonplace treadmill.
She helps us to break a hold/let go and to make our life be more fascinating more interesting!
Be always open, windows and doors of your mind. the sweet madness will show you all that you would not dare to hope for..."

Aug. 22nd, 2006 06:01 pmHi guys, sorry this is text only. I just want some ideas for cool gimmicks I can do for rush week in school. I'm starting up Art Club and for those of you who don't know, rush week is when clubs set up booths to get people to join. So far the ideas I have are record bowls and shrinky dinks for raffles, face painting, a mural where everyone can come up and paint something, a painting/canvas puzzle and yeah that's about it. Thanks a bunch!

Aug. 22nd, 2006 10:07 pmok so one of my best friends is really really obsessed with the show wicked/anything wizard of oz. His 22nd birthday is next week, and I would love to make him something crafty. I bought some small green glass bottles off of ebay because there is a reference to them in the show (I don't want to give anything away if you haven't seen it) but I'm sort of at a loss on what to do. He did meet some of the cast members in Philly on the tour, so I have pictures of him with them, and I was thinking some kind of shadowbox, which would be easier if i wasn't currently @ clemson in south carolina for grad school- i would steal his ticket stub and signed program and that would be that.
I guess then, too, it would be awesome if it was easy to mail, as well.
any thoughts would be amazing.
sorry for the text only.

Scratches on fake leather
Aug. 22nd, 2006 11:47 pmOk, this is mainly a text only post, but I'll include a simple costume I had made for myself before to keep you you all entertained at my nerdiness.
Anyhoo, I was at the thrift store today and I saw this awesome fake leather type material jacket/dress thing for $5. Only prob is that it has a bunch of white stuff on part of the back, kind of like when you scratch leather. I was just wondering if there was a way to get rid of that. I was watching Pretty Woman today (shush, I'm not usually a chick flick person, but we all have have some interests we don't like admitting to >_>) and Julia Roberts was coloring in her black leatherish boots with permanent marker. Would that work? Is there a better, non-ghetto, but just as cheap way to fix it? I really wanna buy it, but not if it looks all damaged.
( Bunny girl at ACen 05 )
I've made a bunch of other things, but my bf is the one with the digicam and I always forget to take pix. Some day I'll just have a huge photoshoot and post all my stuff. Anyhoo, I'd appreciate any help/advice you guys can give me. Thank you! ^_^

Suggestions Welcome!!
Aug. 22nd, 2006 11:48 pmText Only, Sorry.
My boyfriend just moved into a new apartment he's planning on staying in for a while. He's going to be giving me money every week to save up so I can decorate his room. (And eventually his roommates will contribute and I'll decorate the whole apartment.) My problem is I don't know what theme to do for his room. He likes asian inspired stuff, red and black color scheme, but also is really into movies. I don't know exactly how to incorporate all that into one room without it looking out of place and tacky. Any suggestions??? Thank you in advance!!
