Sewing + Cloth
Feb. 5th, 2007 02:32 amHello all!
I'm from Singapore and just joined this community 5 minutes ago cos I really love all the work that's been posted here :)
I'm really new to sewing - I've barely touched a sewing machine, although I'm itching to sew a simple dress on it. Could someone please recommend sew-friendly cloth for beginners? Also, are there any websites around that rank cloth according to their 'sew-friendliness'?
Thank you!

Hello =)
I finally have something to share with everyone!
This is my second attempt at amigurumi: her name is Usagi, the second in a series of two geisha amigurumi that I made as christmas gifts for my best friends. She has bunnies on her kimono (that don't really show well in the picture) hence the name. the kimono and obi are made from vintage kimono silk.

The Emerald City, a costume
Feb. 5th, 2007 10:34 amIt seems to be mod posting day.
I’m almost finished with a new belly dance bra and belt, but I know I won’t have time this week to take pictures and I plan to wear it at an event this Sunday. I thought sharing it would get me over the hump of the last few strands of beaded fringe. As for why I call it the Emerald City costume, my stage name when performing is Ozma.
Excuse my face and hair, when I perform I wear contacts, stage make-up and do my hair and am almost unrecognizable by my peers.. But this is my daily life in which I wear my glasses and no make-up. I took these photos after a day with hot-yoga, a head cold and freezing wind.
What is left to do is this:
Finish the fringe on the back (it only has half in the picture)
Reinforce the hooks on the bra and put a snap in to keep the tail of the chest strap from peeking out once hooked.
Stitching a lining into the belt and put the hooks in.
I made the bra and belt from scratch ( designed the belt pattern in felt and built up from there, bought hard individual bra cups and constructed the bra…).There are no appliques or prestrung fringe.
If you are interested in the process it is on my journal under the emerald tag…every little step.

Illustrations and Jewelry
Feb. 5th, 2007 12:13 pmI've been crazy making little illustrations - notecards, cards, small paintings and a bit of jewelry. I thought I'd show them off since I've been working nonstop for like, five days.

Ambigrams and Questions ~
Feb. 5th, 2007 01:30 pmI got all of my finished ambigrams arranged in a gallery, so feel free to check them out! (There are a few more under the 2007 link as well)
If you haven't heard of ambigrams before, they are kind of a mix of calligraphy and optical illusions. There are many variations, but I like to work with the rotational ambigrams ~
A word reads the same when flipped upside down
One word flips upside down to reveal a new word
And now for some related questions ~
Does anyone use the Speedball lettering nibs?
I use the A-5 size a lot, and sometimes the ink flows very smoothly, and I can draw for a long time with one dip. Other times they do not work well at all. Sometimes moving the gold part (you can see it better here) up or down will help it work again for a while. (Today it will only work for a few seconds after each dip, but I think that might be a problem with the ink)
Any suggestions on how to get these to work better?
Or is there another brand that is better?
Also, do you have any recommendations for a good india ink brand? I've tried two brands now, and was not too pleased. I have to go over everything twice to get a solid black, and even then the pen strokes leave a bit of a reflection. It really doesn't have to be waterproof, so if another black other than india works better, please let me know!

crochet community?
Feb. 5th, 2007 02:13 pmI'm looking for an active LJ crochet community that would be good for a beginner to get ideas, advice on technique, etc. Any recommendations? Thanks!
Wrinkles Go Away!
Feb. 5th, 2007 03:47 pmI prewashed and dryered some quilting cottons and now no amount of ironing and/or steaming will get the wrinkles out. What did I do wrong? How can I get rid of the wrinkles?
Aaaagh!
EDIT: You guys are life savers! I didn't have a spritzer bottle, so I turned on the shower and touched the fabrics to the water to get them damp. Then I ironed them again and they are SOOOOO much better now. THANK YOU!

Feb. 5th, 2007 03:51 pmHi!
I'm not sure if this allowed here, if not, I will delete this entry.
I'm looking for an entry that was made a year or 2 ago.
This girl made a deer, it looked quite big. She used different fabrics, that gave the deer a very vintage look. She took pictures of the deer outside by a tree, if I remember it right.
Does someone remember this post I'm taking about?
I sure hope so.
I'd like to make one like it for my friend's daughter.
EDIT: Mystery solved!
Thank you!

My new obsession!
Feb. 5th, 2007 04:49 pmI haven't posted in ages, because I have finally found the jewelry medium that truly lets me voice what I've been trying to get through with my jewelry for a few years, and would only occasionally really hit upon. I first discovered maille work as a jewelry art form about two years ago, and picked it up a little bit. After a long adventure around and about just about every other jewelry-related art form up to and including hot glasswork, I've come back home to maille.

more zipper pouches...
Feb. 5th, 2007 10:58 pmI haven't posted in quite a while but I wanted to share my new zipper pouches I've done. I was so excited to use up some of my new fabric. I can't wait to make a tote bag out of the Michael Miller space fabric!
Ideas maybe?
Feb. 5th, 2007 11:28 pmI have 400+ Mint Twists that taste god awful but I don't want to just throw them away, any ideas what I could do with them? My first thought of course goes White Stripes-esque but I have no idea what to preserve them with and how to keep my cats from trying to eat them.
