i posted a couple of days ago asking about stenciling onto paper.

as it turns out, waxed paper was my best option (easy to cut, gave the cleanest lines)...and at that, the result still wasn't great

unfortunately, the design looks terrible (much worse than i'd envisioned it) and stenciling every single one of the books will just take way too long (esp since the wax paper stencil only seems to last a couple of goes).

ive been looking over this community for the past few days and im very impressed with everyones work... good job everyone :)

anyway, ive always been interested in sewing, but have never learned how to do it. at all. im absolutely clueless about it. ive decided im going to teach myself, and i was just wondering how you guys would recommend going about it...

do you think its necessary to learn to sew by hand first, or should i just look into buying a machine and read from the manual? are there any learn-to-sew books out there that you would recommend?

hope you dont mind me asking... thanks for any help, it is appreciated!

I Feel dumb and at a loss. I put a new bobbin in my machine and now it gets all bunched up on the back side. Does anyone know what could be wrong? I didn't touch the tention, just the bobbin wineding  (for the life I can't spell this stupid word) parts.  Thanks!

Hi there!

I'm getting back into sewing after *cough* 10 years *cough* of ignoring my machine. :)  I am getting it serviced as we speak, but the manual is lost to the ages.

Does anyone out there have a Singer 6211 and would be willing to Xerox/scan the manual for me? I've found it online for 15+ dollars, which I'd rather avoid.

If this post is not allowed, I apologize in advance.

So this story has nothing to do with craftgrrl but everything to do with my inspiration. So Friday I went to drop my car off because it was making a terrible noise. After a day of not hearing from the mechanic I started to worry. Turns out he didnt have time to look at it. Saturday late afternoon he called with the bad news. The car needed lots of repair and it would cost $1000. I kept my cool until I hung up. Then (since my week had been so bad anyhow and this just was the icing on the cake) I completely fell apart, crying hysterically. I calmed down and decided that I would find a way to earn the money and that crying wouldnt really make things better so all day Saturday I got busy making some jewelry I dont think I have made this many pieces in one day.. Have a look :)

help!

First time poster (hi!) who wanted to thank... someone for sharing their thrift store portraits that they modified with googly plastic eyes. Gave me a bit of inspiration for some paintings I was working on. Ta-da:

Hello everyone! After about an hour searching around various communities, I found this one! Then I searched through the memories to see if I could find something on what I'm looking for, and not finding it, I thought I'd ask. =D

With a large amount of free time, I've decided to take up a new hobby; candle making! I've found myself with infinate hours of free time and really nothing to do, even for an internet junky like me! So I thought this would be the perfect hobby. And it sounds really fun!

But my question, folks, lies in gel candles. Right now I'm in the process of gathering information. What I'd need, the cost of materials, etc. And in doing so I came across a 'how to' for gel candles. And wow, does this look cool! But I had a question that I haven't been able to find, either on livejournal or in various candle website that I spent the better part of five hours looking through.

At what temperature does gel wax melt when lit? I found many tutorials on how to make gel candles with objects embedded into them, and the idea would be great for gifts. But then I thought, wouldn't that burn the object inside the wax too, if you lit it? So are gel candles -made- to be lit, or are they just for decor?

Because honestly, the last thing I want is to make a candle for someone, have them light it and the darn thing catch on fire because the flame hit the embedded object.

Any information on this would be most greatly appreciated. Thank you!! ♥

My sister in law showed me some needlepoint work she is doing and she is using floss and I have a question about what kind of canvas she may have been using. (She is on vacay so I can't reach her for a month to ask) The canvas was not a thick plastic but a very thin firm materiel on which the pattern was either printed or dyed. I know it was not burlap, linen, monks cloth or even a cloth, it is to be a picture for framing...it would not be suitable for any other type of project. Any ideas on what this is called?

My friends and I were super excited to go to MathFest 2007 this year so we decided to make some matching t-shirts to wear there. All the shirts were on sale at michaels and we cut out stencils from cardstock (I'm out of contact paper! *crycry*)

Anyway, my friends and I are trying to put together an official soundtrack for MathFest 2007 (except it obviously won't be official). Does anyone have any good math song suggestions?

edited because i suck at lj cuts
edited again because i failed at fixing my cut the first time

i like doing little quick sketches whenever possible because good things usually start that way for me. this is not necessary a good thing, but it's something i was able to document and share. here is a doodle on a brochure for an andrea zittel exhibit:
