My coffee table had been really ugly for a long time - last time I painted it, I just used the colors I had around, which were essentially hospital green and sunset yellow, so that was one issue. Also, I had made the poor choice of coating it with Modge-Podge, hoping that it would protect the surface and make it easier to clean.. not the best decision. The surface ended up really tacky, and eventually it had bits of paper sticking all over it, and ashes embedded in the surface. Ew.

repainted coffee table!coffee table detailSo, I finally got around to repainting it! I think it looks quite lovely this time around, if I do say so myself =D Sorry about the bad lighting in the photo, I was too lazy to bust out the tripod. The colors are a bit off, especially in the detail shot, but the shape is accurate. Essentially, it's various shades of blue-green.

It's not quite done - I need to add several more layers of polyurethane before the surface is protected enough to use - but I'm being a good girl and sanding the surface between every coat, so it should come out nicely. I messed up a bit at first with the polyurethane spray... my first coat was too think, and it streaked a bit, but I'm hoping it'll even out if I put on enough thin, even coats. What do you think, any thoughts?

I've never been that happy with E6000 for bead projects. It seems gummy and not very strong, and my tubes always dry up before I can use even 10% of it. For securing threads and stuff I preferred hypo-cement, and it has worked great. I've started doing some things with glass gems and metal filigrees, and I was wondering if there was any reason I couldn't use my hot glue gun for these?

Help!

Hey ladies. I have a problem, and unfortunately not much experience to resolve it. We've been given the ok to dress up for Halloween at my workplace, and I was in the nearby Salvation Army thrift shop and found a fabulous retro shift dress from either the sixties or seventies. It looks both authentic and home-made. However, it had really ugly sleeves that came down to just under the elbows and has a really ugly zipper all the way down the front. I took the sleeves off, so it looks more like this now: http://www.chickdowntown.com/viewproduct.asp?ID=68950 only with a better collar around the neck. Anyway, do you ladies (especially you expert sewers, you!) have any idea if there's anything I can do about the hideous zipper down the front of the dress? I've looked all over the internet for several days and couldn't really find anything satisfying to my retro fashion sensibilities. You are my last hope! lol If nothing can be done about it, I guess it's not a tragedy, I'll wear it as-is. I'm just hoping maybe one of you will have an idea.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions/tips you all might have. I promise to post pictures when I'm done with all my alterations and have finished the costume.

And just so this isn't all text, here are some pendants my fiance and I made recently based on masks from around the world:

Thanks!

I've been knitting more and more and more! I even created my own non pattern dreamwoven inspired just knit as I go kind of hat so it is all artsy-ish. I think I will try to use a stiffer yarn if I try to re-create it again so it will stand up better. Here is a brief summary of the projects I've finished this past week, starting with the artsy one:

These are my first pair of toe up socks. I kind of made it up as I went, taking a slip stitch pattern from another pair of socks. Just knit until I ran out of yarn. The second sock has a slightly shorter cuff because of this and the back increases don't line up because I didn't take notes of that part, but its nothing that noticeable.

I made a Susan Sto Helit costume a year or so ago, and a tiny mod clay death of rats.

I am thinking of reusing that costume for a party tonight, but the modeling clay skull is refusing to stay hot glued to the stick I used for the rats body under his cloak, and the death of rats head keeps popping off!

Anyone have any tips for how to get his head to stick hot glue doesn't seem to want to work.

I made this based on some tips [livejournal.com profile] samtabsav  posted by back in 2006. It was rather fun. This was my first Amigurumi and I am very proud of it. It only took about an hour and a half. and I think it took that long since I had to figure a lot of it out on my own.
