Handmade books
Dec. 1st, 2002 11:09 amI remember a few people asking about handmade books. FYI: the winter issue of Ready Made explains how to make a blank book/journal out of a cereal box, dental floss and writing paper.
new project!
Dec. 1st, 2002 11:42 ami've created some silliness.
many thanks for this project to the nutball who inspired it (that would be YOU,

Metal + Paint and/or Glue = ??
Dec. 1st, 2002 02:01 pmI want to collage/paint just about everything in my room. Which includes my lamps. I've done a lot of collage/paint stuff before, but not on metal. (although I have done an AOL tin)
-Could I use plain glue and glue on magazine cut outs? Then seal it with something like modpodge?
-Could I paint the metal with acrylics, then cover it with a sealer?
=/. I guess I could always get paint thats used for metal.

Woo hoo! My mom is teaching me how to knit. Does anyone know of some really awesome sites for patterns, yarn types, or techniques? My mom is a great teacher and all, but her way of teaching is to power-knit and then tell me to do what she just did. She can't explain things well. I am catching on pretty well though. I have started this little practice piece that is like 2 inches wide, and since she hasn't been home all day, I don't know how to end it...so it is getting long. I told my dad it was going to be a scarf for the dog.
Oh yeah, and to the person who posted the "snowman poop" gift idea...that was great. I am now giving two of my friends mugs, hot chocolate, and SNOWMAN POOP! Thanks for the great idea.

those rice heating bags
Dec. 1st, 2002 07:23 pmSince apparently the rice heating bags can be made with salt too (salt heating bags?) and salt can be scented...would it work to...combine the projects? I mean, the only problem I can think of would be that scenting the salt this way would maybe not make it strong enough. I've never done anything like this before so I don't know if the salt turns out just slightly scented or strongly scented or what. If it doesn't come out smelling very strong, what'd be a better way of adding aromatherapy-type scents (I'm thinking lavender, mmm) to the heating bags? I really want to use salt; it's on sale at the local drugstore for 39 cents ;)
Also, the newspaper had tons of JoAnns and Michael's coupons today. Could be a national thing (probably) or might just be a MN thing, dunno.

Dec. 1st, 2002 09:06 pmI made some of those marble magnets today. Tell me what you think!

hi, I'm new here...*waves*
Dec. 1st, 2002 09:13 pmI've been reading up on decoupage - and a few people have suggested using acrylic medium instead of decoupage medium. That's cool because I just bought some gloss medium to play around with...but now I have some questions.
The gloss medium jar says it dries flexible and water-resistant. Does this mean I need a separate sealer if I want to do a tabletop? If so, what kind - jar says "don't use with varnish or oil based paint". Would a water-based polyurethane be ok (if even needed)?
I think I want to add a metalic rub to the surface - should I do this over the paper being decoupaged or over the acrylic medium layered over the paper?
thanks in advance!

Dec. 1st, 2002 10:32 pmoh zeus, i love this place. i've been reading this lj for a while now, but i've just recently been learning craftiness, heavy duty. i just started sewing; one day i decided i needed to learn and i had dad take me to walmart, got a cheap dress pattern and my aunt helped me make it on her sewing machine. its not quite finished but i've done pretty much all of it by myself and am quite proud. (black and white polka dotted jumper - woo!) mom randomly bought us a sewing machine last week, so i'll be making loooots more soon.
also, a friend just taught me to crochet, but i realllly would like to learn knitting. however, i have no one to teach me here. i'm searching around the net to find a really great tutorial, hopefully i'll find one.
okay, and now a question: since sewing patterns are generally wayyyy more expensive than i thought they would be, does anyone have any instructions for sewn skirts that don't require a pattern? maybe an a-line, or i would really like to learn how to make a tulip skirt (the kind that gets wider at the bottom, like, well, a tulip.)
anyway, help would be appreciated. :) thankkks.
