Ok, after the last post on a beautiful assortment of marble magnet pictures that is perfectly legal in this community - and those of you who think otherwise need a swift kick in the knee - I saw the insane amount of not too happy banter and it was shocking. And the people complaining are oddly enough posting anonymously. Ok so I feel like I'm in Elementary School all over again and all I have to say is you people are being ridiculous - get a grip. Oh and I like this quote said earlier too:

"All of this "You can't post this" crap is getting out of hand. Jesus Christ, people. It's an online community. She posted pictures of something pretty she made. She wasn't asking about glue or 1/2" punches or any of the stuff we've all read 17,000 times. Are we back in the 7th grade? Everyone just needs to chill out."

THIS COMMUNITY IS A CRAFT COMMUNITY IF PEOPLE CANNOT POST THEIR CRAFTS OR SHOW PICTURES OF WHAT THEY'VE DONE DO YOU NOT THINK SOMETHING IS SERIOUSLY WRONG?!

Ok that's my rant. I'm sleepy.

i can't find a paper lantern that i like, so i want to make one myself over wire frame. has anyone ever made one? or can anyone suggest the best type of paper and glue to make one?

But I figure since there are lots of crafty people here who belong to some communities I may not have heard of yet...are there any you'd recommend? I mean, just outstanding ones that you enjoy being a part of??? Because craftgrrl has turned into a less than enjoyable experience as of late thanks to the petty nature and the intolerance of some people (not to mention all of the limitations imposed as of late). I understand the need for guidelines, but are there any communities out there that are a bit less...authoritarian and with members that exercise a little more patience and tolerance? Thanks.

After all the controversy as of late on the marble magnet issue, I have added it in the keywords at [livejournal.com profile] shrinersclub. Really, it IS a project transforming something normal and mundane into something beautiful, yes?

I saw a poster asking about other communities...[livejournal.com profile] shrinersclub is a new baby, but if you read the profile there are really no rules but general respect. A place of comfort for everyone.

If you are one to find it, imagine it and create it...hopefully this new community is one for you. And I'd love advice on other keywords I can use if anyone wants to throw some in the pot. Thanks :)

LOOK WHAT I MADE! A scarf. I'm pretty proud of myself. I never finish my projects, and I finished this one without a single wrong stitch! Woohoo! I'm giving it to my boyfriend's sister for Christmas. This picture doesn't do the colour of the scarf justice. It's a beautiful brown/green/rust. I know she'll love it.

See my beautiful creation! )

I see one or two days away from craftgrrl, and the posts have progressed (?) from:
1)repeat how-do-I-make marble questions,
to
2)posts that bitch about those repeat how-do-I-make marble questions,
to
3)posts bitching about the posts that bitch about repeat how-do-I-make marble questions...
Still with me?
Good gawd people, grow up.... this community is no longer enjoyable, in fact it is quite unpleasant. I'll check back when you all get-over-it. Life is MUCH too short for this kind of crap, trust me. Are you ALL Republicans or something????

I read this last night in Cosmo, I haven't tried making it yet but it sounds pretty delish.

1/8 cup Hershey's Unsweeted Cocoa Powder
1/3 cup instant nonfat dry milk
1/2 cup any unscented bubble bath (find one in the baby aisle of the drugstore)
The lactic acid in the milk exfoliates your skin, leaving it soft and smooth, and the scent is a divine calorie-free indulgence.

I don't know about you, but I could use a divine calorie-free indulgence right about now.

i made a necklace.. it's not a magnet, so please don't yell at me :)
i used sculpey and some loose glitter and wire for materials.

i officially hate michaels.  why does a store have to have so many cool things?  ug.  i stopped by last night to pick up some last minute things to finish gifts and ended up walking out of there with way more than i planned.  i did get a couple bags of marbles for 99cents.  they were out of magnets though, so some day i'll get around to making those.  and the checkout lady at the grocery store must have thought i had a rice addiction with the 9 pounds of rice i bought for those rice heating pads,.  heh.

one quick question on soap making. i've been reading through the FAQs and different websites, and some say that you have to spray the molds down with rubbing alcohol before they set. i'm using a glyercin base with scent. do i have to use the rubbing alcohol?

thanks!

whoa.

alright hi. i caused a bit of a controversy there didn't i? hhaha. sorry for bothering anyone with my marbles but hello they were under a cut tag and they're crafts so yeah. and i'm not new at all, i've been in this community for months, i didn't know there was a faq. so yeah, im in the marble community now, you can all rest peacefully.
[identity profile] linzbinz.livejournal.com
I made these at a Christmas party last week, then made a bunch more a few days later...they're really fun, easy, cheap, and turn out pretty. :)

You basically just buy clear christmas ornaments, squeeze acrylic paint inside them, shake them around, and let them dry! Here are some more detailed instructions:

I'm hoping someone here has a steel-trap memory and will help me with this question. Earlier this summer I read an article in a U.S. woman's magazine that featured several illustrated pages on how to alter t-shirts by cutting out collars and sleeves, and making strategic slashes, etc... I can't remember what magazine this was. Does this jog the memory of anyone out there? Thanks!
[identity profile] avitania.livejournal.com
this isn't a show and tell post, it's more of a question post, so i'm not sure if this is the appropriate place to ask; i couldn't find the answer to my question on the FAQ, so hopefully one of you craft mavens can help me on this one.

i'd like to decoupage some glass votive holders and bowls, but having never decoupaged before i was boggled by the many kinds of Mod Podge available.i bought Matte and Glossy, but i'd like to return one as the jars were $4 USD apiece (after having overspent at JoAnn, i want to minimize cost!) and i'm not sure what kind would be the most versatile. i have a papier mache bull's skull that i'd like to decoupage as well, so i'm hoping just one jar of the stuff is all i'll need. which one should i keep? is there another kind i should look into getting?

anyway, i apologize in advance if this is the wrong forum for this - if it is, i'd be grateful for a pointer in the right direction.

thanks,
Avitania

Hi girls (and boys...mebbe)!

I want to make some pretty purple ice cube soaps for my sister and brother in law for chrimble, but I'm having a bit of problem locating supplies. I have checked all the local craft shops for glycerin but to no avail (they have soap kits but these are so bad value for money), soapcrafting just isn't very popular around here, I've found mail order supplies at http://www.thesoapkitchen.co.uk but since I'm time constrained this isn't much help.

Anyone got any ideas of other places to try? Or is there some kind of commercial soap that can be melted and poured from a pharmacy? I suppose I could try and find some cheap purple soap and use cookie cutters or something.

p.s. I'm located in the UK
[identity profile] pookfreak.livejournal.com
Ok it's sort of crafty - but I'm going to New Zealand in February for a month and it looks like I'm not going to have a digital camera to take with me and I hate how expensive film developing is so I'm going to try to limit my film photos as much as possible.

So I came up with a really nifty idea. I'll buy a post card at each place I go and on the back of the post card I'll write what I thought/felt/saw at that place. When I get home I'll take all the post cards and find some nice nifty way to bind them all together so that I have a unique travel journal with corresponding 'photos' of what I'm talking about.

Granted it's not that 'crafty' but I thought it was a nifty idea for anyone who might be traveling. It's also a unique way to make a travel journal for someone - make the front and back of a plain journal out of post cards or old stamps or something.

I finally got my digital camera to work again, so I've finally got pictures!

#1 - Decoupaged boxes! )

The first 2 boxes were done with stamped tissue paper. The third was the first one I did, and I didn't have tissue paper, so it's covered in stamped napkin. Hey, it worked. The picture on that one is just a printed photo, and didn't run or smudge or anything. These were very cheap and easy, and made nice gift boxes to hold ....
#2- marble magnets! )

Those are the only ones I have left. The others are on their way to my sister, my cousin and the exchange student that's living with my aunt. I obviously don't need to tell anyone how these were made. =)
In addition to these things for gifts, I also made gift baskets for my aunts. One was a basket with vanilla chai scneted bath salts and candles, and with little bags of chai, coffee and cocoa, biscotti and coffee spoons (Made using the mint Hershey kisses!) The other was a basket with honey scented soap, bath salts and candles, and a decoupaged votive holder, similar to this one, but in orange and yellow colors. I didn't take a picture before I packed it up.
#3- votive holder! )

My aunt wanted some of the honey scented stuff, because I'd made a basket of it for my cousin in May, for her birthday. That basket was filled with soap, bath salts, lip balm, bath oil and body powder. Again, the little cardboard boxes were my friend. I picked one up, along with black and yellow paints and some cheesy stencils, and decorated that basket.
#4- bee basket! )

I also stuck the yellow and brown candle from this bunch into my aunt's basket. The first candle in this picture was a failed experiment. I wanted to make one of those candles that has the potpourri embedded in the bottom, and it's there, but you cannot see it unless you flip the candle over. Oops. The next three are coffee, colored with coffee grounds, because I didn't have any dye to make a brown color at the time. The yellow and brown one and the two small blue ones are all honeysuckle, and the red and blue one at the end is sugar cookie. That was the first candle I ever made.
#5- candles! )

Finally, a bunch of soap.
The first one is grapefruit scented. I'd made a lot of the ones that resemble slices, but they fell apart. =\
The second is strawberry. It's not so bright in person, and more red than pink, but that's how the picture turned out. The green part has mint leaves in it, and the red part has strawberry seeds. I made this when I was first pregnant, and the smell made me so sick that I ended up cutting it up, putting it in a container and not looking at it since.
The third is nag champa. Pretty simple.
The fourth is a essential oil blend called relaxing. I love this one. It smells so nice (Spearminty!) and is really pretty.
The fifth is kind of a honey/honeysuckle blend with a little bit of wheat germ scent thrown in. It doesn't sound great, but it smells really, really good. The round soap on the left has ground loofah at the top, while the other two have wheat germ and oatmeal added.
The sixth is orange/vanilla. The top is purely orange while the bottom is a vanilla orange mix. The top also has orange peel suspended in it.
The seventh is an ocean theamed soap, with an energizing scent. Why it doesn't have an ocean scent is beyond me. It's got sea salt and seaweed in it and has an orange peppermint scent.
Finally. The eighth is probably the cutest soap I've ever made. It's cucumber melon scented, light green with little pink stars and glitter suspended in it.

#6- soap! )

Oh yeah. This is the "organized" part of the closet that holds all of this stuff.
closet! )
Every one of those plastic boxes is full of soap or candles. There's a box full of soap molds on top, a shelf full of soap molds near the bottom, and I've still got a wooden mold in the living room. On the floor are the mass quantities of sea salt, cocoa butter, glycerine soap and sweet almond oil. Above that is a shelf of herbs and other additives. Above that are dyes. Above that is...random crap. Above that, more random crap and 2 shelves with mass amounts of stuff to make bath bombs and fizzy salts. I've got bags of powdered milk in the living room for milk bath (which should be in the closet, I guess.) There's a shelf of scrapbook stuff, and the rest is cluttering up the living room (Man, how does my husband live with me?) and a shelf of random containers. There's also a bunch of random crap here and there. You also can't see the fucking huge rubbermaid boxes full of stuff that are stacked up behind me in the closet. Eep. Please tell me that I'm not the only one that is this disorganized.

Over the months I have been cuting out random photos that I liked from the magazines. Question is I'm not sure what to do with em all. Have any sugestions?

Also, how do you make those marble magnets?

thanks so much

Does anyone here know anything about book binding? My boyfriend is a struggling writer and since no one seems to want to publish his work I decided I WOULD.

I'm hoping to do this for Christmas. I've looked in FAQ and I don't see anything... anyone have any tips/experiences/links? I've done some searching online and all I can find are cheesy looking "pamphlet" type instructions. I was hoping for something a little sturdier.

I'd appreciate it!!

ok, don't yell at me for this because it's a post regarding magnets (but at least it's not marble magnets)!! if you have a few (or a lot) 1" buttons/pins that are laying around you can turn them into magnets. just remove the pin part and glue them onto a magnet. i had tons of 1" buttons that i didn't want to wear on clothing or bags so they were just laying there in a box collecting dust but i wanted to make use of them so i came up with this idea. now they're looking cute on my fridge! :)
