i'm new at sewing , i've yet to own a sewing machine and has been hand sewing for about 3 to 4 months or so. i'm hoping to get a sewing machine soon. I checked the FAQ/ Memories and couldn't really find what i needed so i'm posting here.

Does anyone has a good book or site to recommend on serveral issues that i want to learn about:
what stitches to use for what [as in for which part of the clothing or whatever you're making] , fabrics [their properties ,how to handle them , which projects they would be good for] and pattern making . Thanks!

Hey - does anyone know where to find a non-abrasive, non-gritty glitter that is safe for use in lip balms?

I know for some people in here graduation must be coming up in the spring so i thought I'd share what I did for my then friends as a gift (because I was poor and they weren't good enough of friends to me for me to spend lots of money).

Walden books had these small plain cloth covered (or something) journals in all different colors, like grey and black and green etc. They were on sale for pretty cheap so I bought up about 5 of them, each in a different color. Then i went to JoAnns and bought some of those cute iron-on thingys, like a cute kitten with a butterfly, a faery, a turtle, some stars and such (the bigger ones were more expensive).

I went home and ironed on the cute embroidered decals thingys to the front of each journal... putting the single decorative ones in a corner or on the center or top, and the ones that i did with stars and cute squiggly thingys i scattered those about to make cute designs....

I wrote this little letter to each of them on the inside telling them that i was going to miss them and for them to use the journal to write about their life and later when we get back together we can all share some of our entries.... At the time I thought this was a great idea because I love to write in journals and it'd help us catch up on things.... but no.

Needless to say, it didnt' work and I no longer speak to any of the friends that I had in school (they were't very good friends anyway but still)... but this is a great idea if you have great friends that you know will use it... its not all that crafty but its still a cute idea :-)

Just curious but is anyone in this community from Central Ohio? I live about an hour north of Columbus and I was wondering if there was anyone near me... (not to make this sound like a pity-me sorta thing but...) My friends have pretty well ditched me and I'm in need of some friends that I can actually do stuff with, like crafting and such....

This was inspired by [livejournal.com profile] xitsmylifexs post here. I thought we could use a thread to coordinate meeting up with each other and doing crafty things. If you're interested in meeting fellow craftgrrls, just post your location here and hopefully people can use this information to meet up or something. I don't know how well this will work out but it's worth a try. If all else fails, we can always use meetup.com (but I've noticed they rather suck)

I'll start: I'm in the southwest suburbs of the Twin Cities, in MN. With 1189 members in this community, there's got to be at least ONE person nearby me :)

Hey girls, I just wanted to tell you how something worked out. I ended up making my boy a book (he's the well-off, perfect gift-giver, come on, you remember) and he loved it! I bound it myself, and used everything I could get my hands on: pastels, acrylics, watercolors, pencil, cut paper, collage, googly eyes, movie tickets...and on and on. In the back, I cut a square out of maybe 50 or so pages, to make a shadow box, and I made him some coupons. You know the deal: massages, expensive dinners, french kiss in public (he's into PDA, I'm not), and a couple "wild cards" for good measure.

My digital camera is dead. Yeah, I know. I'm sorry! But your suggestions were marvelous, I knew I could count on you girls. <3

BTW, as I predicted, he gave me something expensive and perfect...its an original 1946 copy of Don Quixote de la Mancha, with original lithographs of illustrations by Salvadore Dali. It's incredible...I'm so lucky and happy.

This community = supreme deity of your choice

love,
SARAH

Hi *waves*
I read through the memories/FAQ section, and found what I was looking for: how to make the origami paper stars. But when I tried to actually make them, I found the instructions really difficult to follow, so what I'm wondering is this: Is there another site (I used Morning Glory) that explains how to make these stars in a simpler way? A site that maybe makes each step easier to understand? Thanks for the help!

Finished crocheting a scarf for a friend's birthday, and thought I'd share..

Well, I finally put instructions for several new crafts up on my DIY page. Several of you had asked for instructions as to how I made the mouse hat last week. You can find my method of mouse-hat-making here. Hooray! Let me know if you make anything based on this -- I'd love to see it.

Hello, there. I need your help lovely ppl.

I want to make a bag out of leather, like a shoulder bag type thing. I have a sewing machine that can sew leather, but I have no idea where to get some good quality cherry red leather in the London area. Also, I want to put some white piping on the edges of the bag...Any ideas on how this is done? Thanks for all you r help, people!

Yup, I ventured into new ground this Giftmas. My 20 month old grandson loves CARS. When his aunt and I were at Michaels, I found these adorable little wooden cars, so I picked the 2 least breakable ones and painted them up funky for him. The pics aren't great, we are having digital camera problems, but you get the idea. Keegan provided the Va-room, Va-room.

Hi everyone.
I was wondering if anyone had any ideas for what I could do with this? )
It's about 3 feet by 3 feet in size and sheerish. It's meant to be a scarf, but I want to do something else with it ^^

Stars

I want to make the stars that everyone else is making so I looked in the memories section and got this link
http://morninggloryaz.com/itmidx25.htm

Now does anyone know the best paper to use to make stars? Can I make my own strips? I have seen people make them, but I must have missed the directions.
These are the papers I was interested in ordering from them, but I kinda wanted to see first if they were the right size and such.
Lemme know if you can help...thanks.

The sizes of most of them were
Specifications:
Length: 22cm
width: 9mm

Length: 15cm
Width: 1cm

Length: 150mm
Width: 8mm

Why would size and width matter? Bigger stars? And also is it good to use the hologram paper or should I use plain paper?

I bought my daughter a beautiful snowglobe for Christmas and she managed to break it within two days. She shattered the globe on it. Does anyone know if there is a way to repair it, buy a new globe??? I would hate to throw it in the trash. If there is a way to repair it, how and where would I get the materials?

Thanks!

Easiest thing to make EVER, with even the most remedial sewing skills.

2 ties, and 2 metal hoops. I used swing set hardware from Home Depot, because it was one sided (half-circle) really thin, and lightweight. Cut the ties were they start to thin, sew them together, and attach the hoops at one end. Wah-la.

Does anyone know where I can get a 1" button maker and supplies for a pretty great price?.. Thanks :x Kristina

I made armwarmers a while ago by taking a shirt I bought at Ragstock and cutting the sleeves off. Now I have a tank top and matching black armwarmers. I never sewed up the raw edges though, so I'll have to do that someday ::looks sheepish:: Haven't had any problems with fraying yet though.

Is that fusible web stuff strong enough to use on high-stress areas like the armholes of the tanktop? I've only heard of people using it on hems and stuff.

Anyway, today I put on the tank top and armwarmers and thought my outfit looked a little bland...I remembered that back when I posted the knitting nellie/spool knitting thread I looked at my knitting nellie that I had shoved in the back of my closet, and I remembered that there was quite a long finished cord attached to it. I found the nellie, finished up the cord and wrapped it around my waist. Presto, instant belt!

I really like the way this one turned out, and I'm going to make myself another belt like this except with different colored yarn.
last but not least, the picture! )
