I found This site with Home Star Runner stencils. I think they were meant for pumkin carving, but I just knew there are people here that could do so much more with them!

wow.

Ok, I have all my Christmas gifts planned out and most of them bought/made/making already. The two that escape me are my own bf, and his father.

Craig (bf) likes computer games, and knows everything there is to know about the two he plays (massive online role playing games). He won't wear anything but his black shoes, blue jeans, and white or solid color, no pocket, no buttons, no words or designs, T-Shirts. He refuses to wear scarves or hats, and he has the same leather gloves he's had for years that he just thinks are the best things in the world.

I don't know much about computers, so I can't get him something like that....

The first Christmas we were together, I got him a picture of us framed for his dorm. He went crazy! He loved it and showed it to everyone! I have never been able to top that. I got him an album of pictures of us each as children, and then at different stages until it came to pictures of us...Prom, etc.

Last year I got him a wallet that I designed and had a personal message stamped into it. But this year I'm stuck. He doesn't "need" or "want" anything.

The pillow case idea that someone was asking for help on gave me an idea. He really liked a pillow case my mother made for my first birthday and asked if he could keep it. I said sure. Maybe I can embroider a pillow case? But of what? I am completely lost...any ideas?

[livejournal.com profile] cutiekitty Do you know what I could do?

Hi! I'm Brandi. I'm new to the comm. and I'm just now getting interested in DIY. So I was wondering if anyone knows of some good beginner things to make. Thanks a bunch!

Down in the basement looking for paper towel, I came accross the good ol' roll o' duct tape. I brought it upstairs and pondered what to make with it. I began making a sheet of tape when inspiration struck: duct tape armwarmers! Click here for pictures + directions )

Can anyone tell me just how bad a room done completely in fire engine red looks? Does it sound worse than it looks? My son saved up his gift money & we told him he could choose his own color. He seems to have chosen red with "rebows" (rainbows).

Yikes

He does seem to waver between red & blue so I'm hoping to steer him toward blue tonight at Wal-mart's color wall.

Also, any quick ideas on how to do the rainbows? I'd like to do a sort of abstract type thing so that it doesn't have to look straight or perfect.

Thanks!

I followed these instructions and made this:

It's made with bay leaves, dried oranges, cinnamon sticks and pine cones.

It was super easy, and aside from my wonky bow, which I'll be fixing, I think it turned out really cute. I'll be giving these to the ladies at work and to some friends as a pre-christmas decoration gift. It's kind of small, about seven inches across, so it'd look cute on a wall/door, or it could even go on a tree.

Here are some more )

I did mine with more bay leaves than they used in the instructions, and I like them better this way.

Since everyone else is doing it....

You can see my Halloween costume here.

The crafty bit? I made the pants myself (with some help from my aunt) and altered the shirt to fit.

so i like organization.
however fabric patterns and newspaper patterns float all around my house, or crumple up in rubbermaid tins. how do you peoples keep your patterns organized? i saw it once in a binder, but i have no more book shelf space.

I have a couple of tapestries that I bought from Urban Outfitters. I'd like to turn one into a couple of big throw pillows for my futon and the other I want to turn into window panels. The question is how? They are both the size of a full flat sheet. I have no experience in sewing, I have no sewing machine (except for a handi-stitch--ugh), and I don't really know how to make panels or pillows (although I'm sure pillows are easy). I also don't have the $ to pay someone else to do it for me.

Suggestions? Patterns? Anything? Please help me!

I think this is my best costume to date...the pictures aren't terrific (they make me look so fat! it's the old man clothes...and my eyes weren't red, the flash is too bright) but you get the idea. And I stayed in character as much as I could. (the walk and the talk.) I fixed up a wig, made some foamcore scissor-gloves, and put on (really crappy un-blendable) makeup...I was Edward Scissorhands! )

It was so fun! No one recognized me, and people were freaked out that I could walk/talk like him...its a little bit of a Johnny Depp obsession, hee hee. =c )

i think that this wreath: http://www.marthastewart.com/page.jhtml?type=product&id=product1573&site=&rsc= is really neat.

i would love to make a similiar one for my in-laws the only thing is (a) i don't particularly want to spend $79 + price of stamps (i wouldn't mind spending that on them if i had it to spend, but i don't. hopefully that price tag is avoidable) and (b) my father in law is color blind except to blues, so i would want to make it with shades of blue and silver or blues and golds.

(a) has anyone actually embossed velvet w/stamps, etc. before? any tips?
(b) i read that using velvet made with mostly rayon is best but i am having a hard time finding it. most of it is polyester and i read that should be avoided.

p.s.
i made "surprise balls" as my wedding favors (filled w/candy, glass hearts, and a marble magnet) and everyone loved them. i will post as soon as i have photos...

back to cramming for midterms...

this is my book purse. i got the instructions from here (http://tangerine.shes-amazing.net/purse/). should i put handles on it? i'm not sure if i want to keep it or get rid of it yet. and i don't know why i decided on camouflage either. all of my materials were from michael's, except the book of course. it was one of my mom's old nursing dictionaries. yeah, i'm proud of myself.

I discovered this community about a week ago and I just wanted to say that the projects I have seen here are
fantastic! You guys have really inspired me to keep on sewing and creating and to learn how to knit and crochet!

A little bit about myself: I am a 25 year old Aussie living in the USA. Back in Australia, I used to be a little craft/sew-a-holic - but after my move to the States, I was unable to sew for quite a while largely due to not having a sewing machine - but also, I was intensely homesick and lost all desire to do anything creative aside from my site. Thankfully - I have managed to overcome that!

My lovely hubby recently purchased a sewing machine for me boy, have I been having fun! I was kind of lost at first in what direction I should take in sewing but soon enough, my fascination with the Japanese culture and arts, Geisha, and my slowly growing kimono collection pointed me in the right way. I have developed a great appreciation of Japanese textiles and patterns and decided that it was to be my chosen media of choice. As a result, I recycle old kimono that are too damaged to be worn in some way (unsightly and unremovalble stains or missing sleeves etc) but still have ample fabric to play with. About 95% of my kimono fabric collection is silk, whilst the rest is cotton and perhaps a few polyester pieces.

Lately, I have been on a bag making kick, and also a cute pouch making kick using traditional patterns from a book called Omiyage. I am going to start making myself some clothing eventually, but - I have had a 3 year absence from sewing...so I am working my way back in it slowly (and unfortunately, a bit rusty and messy :[ ).

Here are some of the projects I have done so far - I've given away the pouches as gifts, and the bag making
is just experimenting and having fun. I use cotton for the lining in most of the bags and pouches and the bags are primarily made of black corduroy.

I found a new apartment today. The two most exciting things are that there is a cathedral ceiling (about 15 ft) and we are allowed to paint/stencil the walls if we want to. My question for all of you crafty people out there is how can we take advantage of the cathedral ceiling (i.e. lighting, hangings things, etc.)? We were thinking maybe track lighting pointed upwards? Let me know if you have ideas or experience with this. Thanks! :)

You know that glue that you're supposed to lick on envelopes? Is there a glue similar to that glue that you can find in stores, or is it some secret envelope-only formula that the world will never know about? It's pretty strong for something you just wet with your tongue (or in my case, with a q-tip dipped in water) and it would be great to use on magazine envelopes and other small minor projects that require a good but simple adhesive.

5 yards of dollar a yard iridescent taffeta from Wal-Mart, $2 worth of trim, about two bucks for a package of Styrofoam balls (for the eyes) and the rest I had on hand.

I think it was the cheapest costume I've ever made (not to mention the quickest!)

I just made a post and the LJ monster ate it.
Here I go again.

Back in the day we use to make these bracelets in art class. They were very bendable, but had a plastic coating on them so that you would not poke yorself and hurt yourself.
They came inside this white tube, casing, whatever...and there were like 16 different colored wires inside. You would twist them to make spiral bracelets.
I went to home depot tonight, but they did not have anything like what I was looking for. They did not have the wire I needed...that I remember.
Does anyone know what I am talking about? Does anyone remember? Does anyone kow what this wire is?
Is it cable wire or phone wire? Because I asked about phone wire, but it was not what I wanted.

Okay,is it just me or is it my machine?
Today I bought a sewing machine(yay) except I have spent the last 3 hours fighting with it.About every 2 cm,it gets jammed. It doesnt matter how slowly I go or how fast I go,it jams. So,I take the bobbin out, rethread it and try again..same thing. And when its not doing that, the underside of the stitch is all loopy and crooked. Then, when I get it to work for a decent amount of time,it will go then all of a sudden the bobbin thread is gone.WTF is up with this?Maybe Im just not cut out for sewing despite the fact this isnt the first time..
[identity profile] stand-in-line.livejournal.com
Okay,so.I took everyone's advice, went and fixed the tension. Now,its even worse and there are these huge knots of thread underneath the stitch, and the stitch it crooked.I dont even know what to do now.I adjusted the stitch length, rethreaded everything and no luck :S Just big balls of thread
