Okay, so tonight I armed myself with 50 crisp dollars... okay not dollars cause that's a lot of ones. Anyway, I went to Joann's to stock up for making christmas presents as I'm sure many others have done in the past week. I was so scared of not having enough money for everything I needed but even after being seduced by things I don't need, leaving, and being chased out into the parking lot cause they had found the last package of shrinky dinks in the store, my total was 37.70 ^.^

my booty (not that one you perv >:/ ):

-one retractable exacto knife
-three bottles of acrylic paint (white, true blue and dutch blue what makes it dutch?)
-30 magnets (I bet you know what those are for)
-flat clear marbles (take a guess, I dare you)
-E6000 glue
-two wooden boxes
-three fat quarters of various cloth
-shrinky dinks
-a midget from Sri Lanka
-pin backs
-tiny round mirrors
-Aleene's Instant Decoupage

and now, for the main event, my millions and millions of questions :D Thrilled, aren't you?

1) I was torn between buying modge podge/sealant and buying Aleen's instant stuff, on the bottle of Aleene's it says it's waterproof, cause I've heard the modge podge without sealant gets nasty sticky, and I don't want gramma with a box stuck to her arm, so was this the right choice? Or should I take it back and get modge podge and sealant?

2) For the Shrinky Dinks. Okay my plan for the shrinky dinks is to give all my friends a Dolly of... myself ^.^ for them to abuse any way they like.. so, you know, they don't abuse me instead. Now I want the dolls to be relatively the same size, and I also don't want to draw 12 different Wrens, what would be the best way to get the image on all of the shrinky dink pages without a laser jet printer :/ ? I'm not exactly sure what Vellum does, but from what I gather it transfers images from the vellum onto whatever you want it to go on, am I right? If I am right, would this be the right way to go about transering lots of drawings of me onto shrinky dink paper? Or do I need to break into some strangers house to use their printer? (I mean it'd be more likely for me to go to kinkos and get them to print the picture onto twelve sheets of vellum than onto the shrinky dink plastic itself, right?... am I even making any sense?)

3) I heard in Jr. High it doesn't hurt when you get an exacto knife stuck in your eye, is this true?

Okay, fine. That's not a million questions and the last one was just me being a spaz (I really did hear that though), but I really would appreciate your help. My left hand would too, cause she's not looking forward to drawing twelve pictures of Wrenny.

(If this is too long someone tell me and I'll throw a cut in somewhere, promise. Just hit me up on AIM)

Tonight I made some fun stuff using my clear shrink plastic, i made myself a keychain and something for my boyfriend. I'm not sure what his is yet (it's set up like a keychain right now, but i left the cord long so that way if he wants to hang it from his rearview mirror he can, or if he wants to wear it as a necklace he can do that too)

shrinking stuff is fun! )

Limmie know what you guys think =) Used the "3-D" coloring method on the plastic, black sharpie on the front, white on the back, looks really sweet in person and I apologize for the fuzzyness of the pics

Okay, so the Frida shirt didn't hold up after 1 washing in cold water (no bleach.) Now she is the faceless Frida! not good.

What brand(s) of inkjet transfers do you use? What's best? Is there some sort of fixative you can use to make it last longer?

A friend says she uses the inkjet transfers for dark shirts, even when working with light colored shirts. She said they hold up better over time. Has anyone else tried this?

ok, I have this neat idea to stitch custom designs on some cocktail napkins for various friends of mine...

my question to you all is, anyone know a good place to find inexpensive plain fabric cocktail napkins? I don't sew in the traditional sense (ie no idea how to use a sewing machine) so having these premade would be fabulous

ok - so here is one of my stenciled creations

i made a set of 4 shirts with my friend kendell's daughter's nicknames, etc on them

we call her pea pie or the pea, we call her ally girl (her name is alexandria), and then the other 2 had a pretty big "A" on it, and one with her monogram

i didn't have a chance to take pics before her bday - so here is a pic kendell took of her wearing it - which is just so cute!!!
she is 13 months old and soooooo darn cute!!!

Alright, this weekend, I'm starting to work on Christmas presents. And I think I know pretty much what I am going to make for the females, but I have no clue about anything for my dad or brother. Usually I just get them a sweater or a bookor something, but this year, money problems seriously prevent that. I know how to sew, but I don't have a sewing machine (though I have friends who do), so this isn't really a limitation or anything. But I'd like it to be something simple.

I'm also stuck on my boyfriend, too. He listens to a ton of alt-country and writes songs and such, and I want to make him something he can use with his music (that doesn't really require making anything like a guitar strap), or even just something that reminds him of his music. I thought about making him a lyric journal, but I've never really been able to accomplish that very well. He's also an Eagle Scout and goes camping all the time with his brother. So this might be an angle to pursue as well.

So...any ideas for boys who REALLY like golf, camping/outdoorsy stuff, or alt-country music? Because I'm totally stuck...

Thanks in advance!

xoxo

Could anyone recommend a recipe for a coffee body scrub or, better yet, a mochaccino body scrub? This would make a perfect gift for someone on my list!

Hullo Crafties!
I need help and I hope that perhaps at least one of you is out of control bored and would like to help me.
I am in a long distance relationship and in 5 weeks my personal geek has birthday. I thought I'd just buy him some geeky stuff but when I was doing crappy detective work as to what to get him he said he jsut wants something I made. HA! When I searched through memories I found this awesome idea - the box with slips of paper saying why I love him but I have a problem - I haven't been crafty since I left junior high and as I moved to the USA recently I really don't know the things you have here at Micheal's or JoAnn's or their names in English and I hate asking shop assistant for help cause I always have the feeling they will make me buy half of the store and take the other half in leasing.
ANYWAYS - if any of you could tell me what kind of paint I should get so it would be easy to put on a wooden box, if there is any "crafty" name for some nice paper I could cut into slips and so on, you know I jsut need a shopping list.
To anyone who would spare a moment and help me out - big thank you, and I'll be forever grateful and share all my candy :)

i was wondering if anyone has a small hedwig cross-stich pattern they'd be willing to let me have.

i'm making a pillow for my friend and its harry potter themed and i'd like to have a cross-sticth of hedwig on it. i could also use the golden sntich if you have that instead. let me know please! thank you!

I don't know how to sew, but I'd really like to learn. I went searching for a cheaper type machine and came across this one. I wanted to ask you about it first. It's the Brother LS-1717 it has 2 stitches with 17 stitching functions and a 25 year warranty. I'd like to make small craft projects, eventually clothing, sewing on different letters and things to shirts, etc. Would this machine be okay?
It's $99.

I made this baby tag toy as a gift for a friend who is expecting her first baby next month. It's really colorful and has different textures which are all supposed to be things that are interresting for babies. :) The front is a striped cotton and the back is red fleece like the spot on the front.

beads?

Okay, I need some ornamet ideas for my mom.

Her girlscout troop is supposed to make some simple ornaments to hand out to the old folks at a nursing home. Any suggestions would be good, but she has these beads that she would really like to use because they're red white and green, and really wouldnt use them for anything but something x-masy. She already thought of making those things where you string beads on wire and form it into the shape of a candy cane, but nothing else original or fun so far. By the way, the beads are sort of roundish, but the have flat edges all over the place. So if anyone can think of anything for her, that would be great.

By the way, any basic craft supplies you could probably think of to use, my mom most likely has. She's a craft junkie. :) Thanks again!

I've kept up a good pace at work today, which is rewarding. But not nearly as fun as finishing a scarf last night for my beautiful Looking Good friend, Tlg. I originally got the idea to put a slit in it from Megan of Not Martha fame, but I saw one in person at Banana Republic over the weekend. When I ran the idea passed Tlg, she sounded very excited, so I'm pleased to report my success.

so i made a little bulletin board out of 9 aol tin bottoms. it's a magnet/cork board.
here's a pic:

i glued the tins together in a checkerboard pattern and sprayed paint the ones facng up, and added cork stuff to the ones facing down. it's super rad. it's not *quite* finished, i need to touch up some paint and glue some stubborn cork parts down, but i couldn't wait to take a picture and share this. i made mine with 9 tins, since they've been piling up, but it'll work just as well with 4, or even 2 (for a locker sized one, hehe). if i end up making another i think i'll paint it black and white, checkerboard style for a friend ^^
[identity profile] tuaqmuk.livejournal.com
ahaha, well ... Chemistry class was boring, so I came up with these :)

Super easy and I love them. I just wrapped some wire around a lipstick tube, attached the earring hook, and put on some beeds :)

hey all, does anyone know of any options besides iron-on transfers for t-shirts? i'm scared of peeling!!
i have heard something about a polymer medium, but i'd like to know more.
or of any other options??
[identity profile] sixteen.livejournal.com
i bought a patch pizzaz about three months ago [i've wanted once since i was little, and it was $5, how can i go wrong]
two questions in result:
1:
it comes with a glue like substance to put on the back of the patches do they dont unravel. the glue of course was hard as a rock. what else could i use? i don't want to use white glue because well, its not waterproof
2:
can anyone think of any fun crafty thihgs i can do with it besides make shagcarpet esque patches that are increadibly tacky, take forever to make, and are just generally a pain in the ass?

*shrugs* i likeit, good for filling time, but it took me almost an hour to stich up a plain red star patch. *shakes head*
but i have one that says express yourself on the back of my denim jacket. ooo yes. hot sex it is.
*laughs*

and for all you crafty ladies who are stuck on what to get your rocker-boy boyfriends as a gift, sew him a manpurse! i made one for my boyfriend for his birthday and he's so in love with it it hurts. and his roommate wants me to make him one because the're so much handier than lugging a backpack around with them everywhere. i used a slightly modified version of this pattern only real difference being the dimensions of the bag. i also stencilled the nine inch nails NIN logo on it in silver spray paint.

that reminds me, i made myself a totebag out of canvas, washed it post sewing, and then using gold spraypain stencilled "shake it like a polariod picture" on the one side. i made it maybe a week ago, and already all the spray paint has rubbed off. any ideas why? does spray paint go "bad" for lack of a better word [this has been in my garage for YEARS].

thanks for any help

hello. i couldn't find this in the memory, but hopefully it hasn't been asked before:

i have a speedball silk-screening kit and for months wasn't sure of how to use it. angry after a shirt did not work out, i let ink accidentially dry on my screen. what can i use to get it off? the instructions say windex, but that isn't working.

in the same vein, i have been using a comet-like cleanser to get rid of my screen filler, and although it gets less dark, it doesn't go completely away. i trace my design on, and similarily the pencil lines don't seem to go away.

has anyone had this problem?

i just want to clean my screen!

Bath Bombs

Nov. 13th, 2003 07:17 pm
[identity profile] yellowsocks.livejournal.com
I've looked in the faq but wasn't satisfied with what I found. I was wondering if anyone has a tried and true recipe for making bath bombs? I've been overwhelmed with the amount on the internet that I've found, but frankly I can't afford to buy the supplies and have it go bad.

Another question I have is where do I buy the supplies? Can I buy the molds at Michaels? I've basically got a Michaels and Walmart that I'm familiar with for craft supplies. I ljust moved to Saskatoon though, so if anyone out there knows of a good place in Saskatoon besides Michaels or Walmart for buying supplies, please let me know.

I want to show you all some pictures of my newest painted things, but I'm confused. I know I can't promote my business here, and I'm pretty sure I'm not supposed to link to it at all. I was thinking of creating a page on my business site JUST for pictures, so that whenever I want to show something here I can just throw it up on that page and link to it here. There wouldn't be any links to other parts of the site. Are we allowed to do it this way?

So I decided to make some of these for my friends for christmas

Now to be super original...I have some questions:

1. Is there any way to reinforce it or pad it or make it more sturdy purse like? It seems like it would be kind of flimsy to me.

2. Is there a cheap way to make new handles/ make the original handles less...boring? Would putting grommets on the sides work?

3. I'm making linoleum stamps of my friends faces for an art book and I thought it would be cool to use the stamps on fabric for these purses. What kind of paint should I use? Would hand printing or using a press work better?

Thank you [livejournal.com profile] outragedfoliage for the inspiriation.

I had so much fun doing these. They are painted with acrylics, and on the table I used some Pearl Ex pigment -- I love how it came out!

Here's a coat I fancied up today. )

It looks so much better in person, I swear. Basically, it was just a plain black blazer from Goodwill, and I wanted to make it pretty so I added the pink ruffles (I was a little over-zealous and took the picture before I sewed them onto the left sleeve) and trimmed the edges in white to make the collar thing stand out, then I replaced the boring black buttons with shiny pink ones that match the ruffles. It was ridiculously simple to do but I love it dearly.
[identity profile] asinfulstrange.livejournal.com
Do you think if i were to iron on or simply go by the instructions to put temporary tattoos, onto a tshirt or skirt or something.... if it would stay? I doubt it, but what if i were to put something like a clear acrylic paint over top of it to seal it on? Just wondering... would it work or should I just try it and tell everyone the results? Any other suggestions for how to seal it?

THANKS A TON!!!!!!!!!!!!
