I have a TON of baby wipe boxes stacked up in my closet. I have NO idea what to do with them. I hate throwing things away that I know I could use for a project. Any project ideas for baby wipe boxes?

Didja ever make something, or paint something, or craft something in some way, and you totally loved it? You loved it while you were working on it, you loved it when you first stopped and stepped back and looked at it, you loved it 10 minutes later when you looked at it again.... but the next morning you look at it and you're kind of like.... "Eh?" Has that happened to anyone here? What did you do about it? I'm going to continue on with my project (a painted chair) tonight, but I'm feeling a little sick over the fact that I'm no longer in love with my creation. Boohoo!

On December 13th, I'm going to be volunteering at a shelter. Basically we're going to have a holiday party for about 100 kids, all between the ages of 4-8. I'm on the arts and crafts commitee. I'm stuck for ideas..however...and I really want this to be nice for them.

My mom suggestested "decorate your own" something, and I thought of maybe "decorate your own felt bears." I was planning on sewing up some really simple felt bears/stuffed animal things ..and either cutting out pieces of felt and providing glue or bringing different colored markers so the kids could draw on the bears.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm 17..so I don't really have access to a huge amount of funds..and it's gotta be something I can get ready by the 13th.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

:)

Who knows about making hats for newborns?

I want to make this bonnet for a friend who's due in mid-December. She and her husband are in the SCA, and I'd like to have the hat finished for the baby to wear at their 12th Night feast, which will be some time in January.

But I haven't made hats for newborns before, so I'm not sure about what size it should be. It's going to be sewn, so it won't be as flexible as a knitted or crocheted cap. Is there a standard for newborns?

I'm also wondering what I should line it with. I was thinking china silk - that would be okay with a newborn's sensitive skin, wouldn't it?

hi, this is my first post. be nice! i made these coffins back in july for a friends birthday party. i made the design myself, with a ruler and a calulator. i used cheap particle board and a table saw to cut the wood. then i used liquid nails, and finishing nails to put them together. and i got some hinges at the hardware store (this was a pain in the ass, you'd be surprised how hard it was to find the right hinges.)

then, i painted them with a flat latex black on the outside. when i was done, one coffin got a layer of batting, clear vinyl, and then red fabric on the top lid as well as the inside of the coffin. i just used a staple gun for that, you can see how its a little screwed up on the top, but my cat attacked it.

for the other coffin, i printed out 7 million pictures onto regular paper, got a huge tub of mod podge, and went at it. it took hours. finally, everything was coated with polyeurethane.

the only problem i had was on the places that i was careless with my decoupaging, the polyeurethane got underneath the picture and turned it yellow. other than that they came out pretty cool. they didnt take very long either, maybe a good solid 20 hours for 2, 4 foot coffins. i however, was covered with paint, polyeurethane, mod podge and staple cuts. hehe. i still have them. dont know what to do with them though.

anyway, this is really wordy. on to the pictures. coffins & more )

I know asking questions that have already been answered is damn damn damn irritating, but I checked memories (and a few troubleshooting websites) and nothing's been suggested I haven't already tried. Jesus Christ, I'm ready to smash my sewing machine into tiny pieces.

I'm trying to hem a skirt. I had some trouble with the thread doing that weird loopy thing, but I re-threaded and it fixed itself.
I start a seam, all's going well. It starts to feel slightly odd, so I stop and halfway down the thread's gone all loopy again.
I've re-threaded the machine about ten times, adjusted the tension, cleaned all over the place, and still it's happening. The top thread and bobbin thread are the same weight, btw.
Any suggestions?

Also, in the memories someone said this could be due to the bobbin being the wrong size- I had the problem fixed and it started again, could it still be down to the size of the bobbin?

Hey, everyone. It just occurred to me that I'd never posted any kind of intro, but have replied to a bunch of posts. Heh, sorry 'bout that.

A little about me, in case you were curious: Read more... )

My question - Where do you guys find materials for making plushies/stuffed animals? I have a Hancock up the street from me, but their selection leaves little to be desired, and I haven't had much luck elsewhere. I've even tried searching online, but I'm not sure what to look for (what would that be called?). I'm looking for the nice fluffy stuff that is used to make high-quality babies'/childrens stuffed animals.

I'm not entirely certain, but it may legally need to be flame-retardant. If I'm not mistaken, babies' sleepwear and bedding needs to be, but I've yet to find more specific information regarding the manufacturing and selling of baby merchandise.

If anyone has any knowledge in this area (laws of baby stuff and/or plushie material) or know of any sites that might help me, I'd appreciate it.

(BTW, I did search in the FAQ, but it didn't help.)

Thanks.

i live in las vegas, a pack of playing cards of the right dimensions are $1, and trading card sized porn cards are handed out all over the strip. so i have all of these trading card bases to use, but . . .

what is the best way to mount things to glossy cards? rubber cement and glue sticks are out, as is elmers, tacky glu, and modge podge. all i can think of now is spray adhesive, and we all know what a beast that is. any and all suggestions are welcome.

thank you in advance, i'll be continuing my web search and will post an answer if i find it.

Howdy doody. Yesterday, I went to joann's and bought some polka dot fabric and some bright pink tulle. So, between the time I got home and about a half an hour ago, it turned into this:

Thanks for looking, and happy crafting. :D

I've gotten a lot of comments and requests for a how to on making your own stockings. Now keep in mind these are stockings that need a garter belt they are not pany hose. You could probably stitch them to undies if you were determined but mine aren't.

You can find pics of my stockings in my journal and the memories section has lots of other things I make as well as a few more pics of stockings in the sewing or accessories section

It's a flash tutorial. Hope it makes sense and is as easy for you as it is for me. It's a fun and simple little project.

My current English assignment is to write a children's winter story. It has to be nondenomiational, and our final grade on the project will be based on our memoization of the text (we can't have a copy of the story with us), and the review that the 1st graders give us. Now, contraty to popular belief, 1st graders DO like to make sophomores cry!
but I digress.
The important thing is, since I cannot have a copy of the story with me, I need nice little props that will intrigue the audience and help me remember what comes next in my story. It's about a little girl whose favorite color is red and she wears red EVERYTHING and she loses her red mittens in the snow. The mice find them and give 'em back. End of story.
Craft-Related question:
I want to make construction-paper applique's like you see in Maurice Sendack picture books but I don't want the paint on them. Does anyone know where I can get templates of people for an appliqué job like this?
curb your enthusiam all, because in less than 3 weeks I will have fantabulously crafty photos to share with all!

This is my first time posting anything I've made, so please be nice. I got bored the other night and made a bag. I found the fabric at WalMart for $1.00, and I lined the inside with black felt. The hearts on the front are red felt, and the strap is red foam that I cut and sewed on. I had to hand sew everything because I'm a dummy and don't know how to thread my sewing machine. Don't be too harsh! )

okay, this unfortunately was not made by me, so instead, let's talk about how proud i am of sarah and the amazing hat she made today.

OK i feel stupid. I looked through the FAQ but I couldn't find it. does anyone remember a post someone made about making pins out of felt that looked like flowers? I'm pretty sure I could do ith without instructions but I'd rather have something to go by if anyone remembers. thanks girls you rock.

my friend has said that she wants to start a crafty hobby. we've already weeded a out a couple things: knitting, crocheting, quilting, calligraphy (sp?) painting. any other ideas? what some things you ladies like to do? what's not to hard for a beginner?

also, what are some things i should include in the gift? for example, if i where to get her stuff for scapbooking (which she also weeded out) i could get her some pens, markers, stickers, specialty papers, little charms and such.

and i just thought of something. maybe she'd be interested in collaging. besides the items i mentioned above, what other stuff (besides glue and paint)could i include?

sorry for so many questions and thanks for any help. :)

Okay. I want to learn how to crochet. My grandmother taught me how to crochet a simple chain stitch (I don't know if that is the right terminology) when I was very little, so I can sew one row without problems. I want to learn how turn a corner and start a new line. I don't want to do anything fancy yet, I just want to be able to make two rows before I get into anything crazy! I wish I had learned this from my grandmother, but now I'm kinda wanting to learn this in tribute to her memory. I've looked online, but have found nothing that didn't confused me to no end. Can anyone help me?

I Made a day planner for my friend's bday. She likes the LOTR trilogy (who doesn't?) and there was a planner she was drooling over at Target, that was about 15 bux!! So, I made one using pictures I found online. I think it turned out pretty good.
