working on brother's skull scarf. unfortuantley the skulls look like the misfits skull. adn i only had tacky glue, so it isnt washable. so i started to stich it on, but i can't decide if i like the way it looks. should i go out and get some cream thread instead?

and i was thinking of maybe putting little red x's in the eyesockets. btw, the scarf is like 6 feet long, and the fringe is a about a 12".

sorry to bug the community with this,

but does anyone know the link to the website that sells handpainted/dyed satin ballet slippers for around 80 dollars?

thanks

LJ has a lot of wonderful communities, no doubt, this being one of them. Unfortunately this community also overlaps into other communities like [livejournal.com profile] crochet and [livejournal.com profile] knitting and so on and so forth where people like to show photos of their work, which I think is great.

However, I wonder if those of you that post your pics of your beautiful works in more than one community and even those that have more than one picture, could possibly stop and do an LJ cut so our friends pages aren't filled with duplicates and with photos that are more than one and huge...as has been a recent thing.

I don't mean to be a pain in the arse but if you all would kindly think about posting your photos, many of us would be greatly appreciative if you would put them behind a cut.

A nice description of your project in the LJ cut code would service more than you know.

By no means am I some kind of authority here or anywhere but it would be nice that if you must post photos, especially when cross posting, you do so with an LJ cut tag. Be creative to your cut tags and surely people will enjoy the work but the repetition, as I am doing now in this post, can be dang annoying.

I love to see people's work but it would be nice if y'all would consider that the same picture and two in a row can be higly annoying and not needed. Chances are, if you give us enough information in your cut code, we will be interested to click on it.

Just a thought. No hard feelings, just asking people to be considerate of the various communities here.

Hey,

I was just wondering if anyone here does glass blowing, or knows anyone that does that would be willing to sell me a specific item. I need a little glass heart. Long story, but if it works, I'll let you all know what's going on.

Thanks,

I need to come up with a Christmas present for a lady in her 70's. She's the nicest person I've ever met. She just gave me an iPod for my birthday. Recently she lost her husband, and she really needs some support in random bursts of love from people.

I want to give her something that she'll love, and I want to make it, but our family is stretched for money right now. I looked through the FAQ's, but I'm not looking for bath salts or furniture made out of recycled things (saving those for a summer project, though. XD). Anyone have any ideas?
[identity profile] vicious-kittie.livejournal.com
I have a question about those chocolate spoons that seem to be the newest craze :)

I know you can make them with chocolate [and caramel, as I've seen in the FAQ], but is there anything else you can make them with? My boyfriend's mother is allergic to chocolate, but I think she'd love this type of thing.

*flails*

I keep seeing mention of these chocolate spoons. Can someone please direct me to more information? I've checked through the FAQ (I'm pretty sure!) and I can't find anything! I really want to try making these! If you are giving them as gifts, how are you packaging them?
[identity profile] ethicalcannibal.livejournal.com
I think we get a lot of "I don't know what to give posts". It happened last year around this time, too. I thought I would walk through my own process of thinking about it. I hope you all add posts on how you decide as well.

I think about the person I want to give a gift to, and what they like. I usually consider music, if they wear hat's, scarves, etc. What kind of foods they eat. If thier bath products looked a bit sparse the last time I was there. You could make a list if you want. Including sports, hobbies, favorite colors. I also try to weasel everyone's sizes out of them early on so I know that bit if I need it. I keep lists of those!

I play the riddle game, and pay attention for a little bit. This includes subtle, "Oh I was thinking about getting this for myself, what do you think?" to see if they liked it. I let them know what kind of crafting I do in conversation, and see if any of that appeals to them.

If I am really stumped, usually because I am broke and need to get something done on a ridiculous budget, I start looking through craft sites. I don't look at it as if I am looking at a specific project, but whether something similar might appeal to them, or if it will jog my creative thoughts to make something entirely different.

Then I decide if I can make something, preferably fast, in large quantities, and fits my budget, that the recipients would be happy to recieve even if it's not spot on to thier likes. For instance I gave my Mom, (the hardest person to get presents for in the world!), marble magnets last Mother's Day. I figured I would get a polite smile, but she really was ecstatic to recieve a gift I spent time on. It might not have been a designer perfume, or from an expensive store like she likes, but she was happy and put them on the fridge. (I was shocked!)

I also see if there is something that I could make, being crafty, that the other person has a hard time getting. I have an autistic nephew with major gluten/dairy/soy allergies. We routinely make him cookies without milk, wheat, or soy. He doesn't usually get to much in the way of cool food so that only takes a bit of research and some trial and error in the kitchen. I have a friend with no crafty family that I know is always cold, so he get's a scarf and a hat. I have another geeky friend that worships the coffee bean (okay, not really!) so he is getting several bars of coffee soap.

I also try to remind myself that gift giving doesn't have to be expensive. That it's about letting the people I care about know that they are important to me. Sometimes a tiny, but well presented gift can mean more than a gift certificate. I was given a tiny paper box made out of wrapping paper one year by a coworker. Inside was a single piece of chocolate. The box was so cute, and had such a cute ribbon that I kept it for years after. I was truly touched by it.

Okay. I hope my ramblings might help. Please post how you decide on your gifts so I don't feel silly up here all by myself!

today's my birthday.
crafty birthday gift haul:
paint by number
8 pack of playdough
2 large skeins of very soft fluffy blue yarn
stitch holder
2 small balls (maybe enough in all to make a pair of mittens. but probably not even that much) of terrycloth-feeling pink varigated yarn.

the question is... what sort of creative stuff can I make for myself out of the pink terry-feeling stuff (I'm a knitter, not a crocheter). I have plenty of scarves, hats, and armwarmers. Basically, I'm asking for really creative or odd knitting ideas for not much yarn.

Thanks.

I have seen many posts on making chocolate spoons.
For those of you who know someone who does not drink coffee here is a version for

HOT CHOCOLATE SPOONS:
You will need-plastic spoons
semi-sweet chocolate chips
miniature marshmallows
coco powder

Melt choc. chips, dip spoons in chocolate, lay on wax paper.
Fill base of spoons with melted chocolate.
While still melted place 3 marshmallows in chocolate.
Sprinkle with coco powder.(LET HARDEN)
Wrap in cellophane & tie with ribbon.
Stir spoon in hot milk for tasty HOT CHOCOLATE!

Hope this helps!

sorry for doing the gift idea post, but i'm rally stuck and didn't see anything of use in the memories.

old people presents?

my oma and opa (grandparents)
are hard to shop/craft for.
my opa loves his german shepard, animal planet, old westerns, and carpentry.
my oma loves cooking and being sentimental about family, and german stuff -- not too much else. she's also not very feminine, so all the bath salts and soaps and stuff is out.

anyway, HELP! thanks.

hmm ive been browsing through the faqs/memories for the past 2 nights... i have been trying to think of some gifts for my friends for xmas... i dont have much money, and i can't think of anything else to make for my mixed group of friends...

cd's they already have... and some things may seem to kiddy... especially some of the things i found on google last night...

so far what i have in mind is to:
hand-draw each a xmas card [which all of them loved their hand drawn bday cards]
a 1 page letter to each... with inside jokes between us/memories/what not.

im stuck on what to make to include for each... help!
im crafty, i know how to use things... and i have a lot of things i could use laying around my house...thanx

I found this site here totally by accident earlier today and there were so many cute things on it that I had to share the link to the main page instead of the crafty things. There are a lot of craft gift ideas and I figured there would be some on this community that might like to check it out!

Personally I like the idea of making your own fortune cookies...those can be used at a party...

Or doing the cookie layering recipes on Gingergread Jars...

There is the Kerchoo Couch for people you know who are sick...too cute.

Here is one for you guys...It's a Hair Snake/Snake Twists instruction sheet on how to make them. My daughter would get a kick out of that...

Ok ok I'm done...I think I'll check this thing out later on when I have more time but figured I'd toss out a site that seems to have a lot of cute ideas on it! Enjoy...

My friend Dora made a record bowl. Here's how to do it:

Make a record bowl! DON'T PREHEAT THE OVEN! Get a metal bowl, turn it upside down and center the record in the middle bowl. Put it in the oven for 10-15 minutes on 300 degrees. Check the bowl every 5 minutes. Don't let it melt too much or it will drip. Once it's done, (at the shape you want), turn the oven off and leave the door open for about a minute or 2. With an oven mit, go underneath the bowl and push it out under the oven rack a little by little. Let it dry for about 20 minutes and check the edge of it to make sure it's not still wet. Once it's dry, peel VERY slowly or the record will crack!

Good luck!

Hi everyone

I ordered one of those handy stitch mini sewing things last week and it should be arriving in the mail next week. My question is, how have your experiences with it been? Is it easy to use? What have you made with it? I bought it because I figured it was easy, although I have a real sewing machine that was my grandma's but Idk how to use it.

Any comments are greatly appreciated. :)

My second post today, but this is sort of an emergency.

I need a short poem to put inside a small card for a birthday tonight. She's turning 16, and I'm giving her a gift jar of russian tea and a christmas cactus in a record bowl. I'd like one about tea and flowers, but am having trouble finding one. I'm a pretty decent writer unless put under pressure, and so bingo, my writing skills just ran out on me a minute ago. The thing is that I don't want to freak her out with one of my ilexia bon swan poems. But anyways, any links or anything will be a great help if it's before 5:30. *mad rush*

No questions this time... just wanted to say my oatmeal soaps came out AWESOME!!!

whoever had the idea of the ice cube tray... thanks. It worked out great!

And also... someone a few days ago mentioned adding a drop of food coloring (red and green) to the soaps and i'm going to do that too, thank you so much for that idea! <3

anyway... my new project is to make a pouch for my game boy advance with mini individual pouches on the outside that i can keep the little games in.

I was thinking it would be a cute gift for a guy who plays a gba... the actual game boy is 8.2 cm by 8.2 cm, the games are 6 cm by 3.4 cm. i'm either going to do velcro or magnetic closures.

Ok, so all the spoon posts have sparked yet another :). I didn't even think to make them until I saw all these...

I'm wondering if there's a way you could make them have a cinnamon flavor? My mom loves to put cinnamon right in the grounds before she makes her coffee, but my dad hates it...so most of the time my mom goes without the flavor she really likes. I was thinking of sprinkling cinnamon on the chocolate, but I thought that might taste funny.

hi; i'm working on a book for my bf's christmas gift.
it consists of each page printed out on photo paper (for good quality) and i'm going to be glueing them onto black paper (so the backs of the pages -- only fronts have images/text -- will be black instead of white and say "canon / epson", etc.)....

anyway, my question -- i'm trying to start glueing pages down already (as in right now, since at this moment i'm cutting the pages). i was wondering if a plain ol' gluestick would be strong enough to hold the photo paper backing to black paper (same thickness and such as printer paper, but black). if not, then what other glue should i use? i would use rubber cement, but i ran out. =X and i was thinking of using elmer's glue mixed with water or mod podge, but my past experiences have led me to my conclusion that paper wrinkles and this glue shouldn't be used on it.

any suggestions?

Has anyone tried the whole melted chocolate thing, but instead of dipping spoons in them, you could make them into ice cubes or something like that? And you could also layer them, put white chocolate in, let it harden, then milk chocolate, and so on. Or you could sprinkle crushed oreos in the ice cube tray before you pour in the chocolate.

I just thought it would be a fun variation, though I haven't tried it myself. It'd be kind of like making your own chocolate bar.

if I get that, would it work for image transfers? I just found the information on the web and have never tried it, but I really want to try it now instead of the decoupaging onto the box I have for my sweetie. I have the printouts, why not try this. I also want to try this with a friend's picture of his new baby he sent out the day she was born for a christmas present. :-)

Does the Elmer's glitter glue work as a see through top coat? I want to use it as a sort of decopauge medium.

Also I heard of new sew fleece sarves. I want to try some out. Any links or instructions. Also any place to pick up cute patterned fleece cheeply online? I really would like bubbly stars or kitties..

I have the flu (the real deal, not the 24-hour stomach kind) and am on all sorts of meds, so I'm rather scatter-brained and clueless at the moment--not to mention housebound.

Anyhow, I want to make some draft dodgers (door snakes) because our doorways (and those at my friends' houses) are rather drafty. I have one. It's filled with styrofoam beads/pellets. Can anyone remember where to buy these? I can't remember where we used to get them, but I know we could buy them somewhere when we needed bean bag refills (of course, I pour in packing foam curls now whenever I get a box of packed goods. Makes my beanbag nice and stuffed). Was it perhaps a furniture store?

I'd prefer to avoid WalMart. Going in makes me sick (physically) and I have some ethical reasons for shopping elsewhere. Plus my husband will have to pick this stuff up for me and he absolutely hates WalMart and won't go in unless I make him (I do have to get our eyeglasses/contacts there, along with some of our medicine).

I don't want to use anything natural, because mice can be a problem in these drafty old houses.

So, please... someone remind my fever and drug addled mind... where can I buy styrofoam beads? I know I could use polyfill or cotton lint, but I'd rather use the styrofoam for this--better insulation.

Another thing--if I make one of these for a household with (young) cats, should I definitely use batting instead of styrofoam? I'm guessing styrofoam isn't good for eating, but pellets might pass through the cat's digestive system without harm. I don't *know*, being allergic to cats and not terribly familiar with them.

If I make cat toys filled with catnip, do I need to worry about what kind of fabric I use? Is string an issue? Are the cats going to get their intestines bound up with string if they chew the fabric apart? Should it be all cotton? Should the string be all-cotton?

Thanks!

i know this is about the 5th post about it today...but...
woo, i just made some chocolate dipped spoons :D only, i didn't dip them...as the chocolate wasn't deep enough. so i used the wooden spoon i was stirring it with to spoon the chocolate onto the spoons. much easier! the last lot i made turned out pants, coz i used cheap chocolate...and melted it in the microwave. i'm using cadburys chocolate this time though and they look a lot better...and i used a pan of boiling water with a bowl over the top to melt the chocolate. i found these new sprinkles when i was shopping the other day...so i got some and have sprinkled those over a few of the spoons. the sprinkles are made by supercook [www.supercook.co.uk] and as far as i know, they come in pink and christmas tubs... :D they're not actually on that site though...but there are some great recipes and free stencils on there!

Hello everyone! This is my first post to this community although I joined at least a month ago. I'm into a lot of crafts but at this time of year I make and have tried my hand at selling Bucilla stockings. I get a lot of ideas for stuff that I would like to make but sometimes I can't figure out exactly how to do it. So, I've decided to come here to tap into everyone's expertise. Today, I was given a vintage set of Care Bear sticker cards. They are very adorable and my daughter and I are avid Care Bear collectors. As I looked through the stickers, I thought it would be really neat to blow one of the images up and transfer it to fabric. So I'm posting behind this cut exactly what I would like to do...

I baught these jeans a couple of weeks ago. As you can tell, they're somewhat straightlegged, or a little more than I'd like. I prefer flare jeans. What I was thinking was...if I slit open the sides, about 4 inches up (or however much up I need, I don't know), and sew into the gap a piece of fabric of some kind that I haven't decided yet, would it make it flare more? Like these?.

Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks :D
