Glass etching Take II (livin on the edge)
Dec. 13th, 2003 12:29 amOkay so I etched me some glass (without safety glasses and my eyes didnt melt out YAY). Not an actual glass because I got impatient waiting for them to dry but the kit had a little square of glass in it so I basically etched a coaster. It says Merry Christmas and has snowflakes all over it. So I can tell I am not going to like those specially made for glass etching by this company rub on stencils much but thats what I started with. Just because I guess.
BTW the random ones that come in the kit are ODD, what a wierd collection of odd stencils.
Moving on it took me -ages- to rub the stencils on and tape it out and stuff but it was fun. Then when I rinsed it it looked like it hadn't worked my head almost popped off I swear. Witness me hissing and whining. I was of course a moron, It was just hard to see because the images were slender and it was still, well, wet.
*blush*
My bad. So it did come out and it looks lovely if you hold it up to the light but that isnt going to happen much since I will probably just use it as a coaster. It looks like not much of anything when lying on the table though :-(
What I am wondering is this...How long do you all leave the sludge on for? The directions seemed very forceful about it being only a minute, but would it have come out darker and more obvious if I held out longer? Or is it always kind of faint when the images are slender?
I went to try a custom stencil on a glass I bought to practice on but I smashed it to a near molecular level on the way down the hall. I still have no idea how or why it leapt from my hands but I took that as a sign I should take a break and post about my first glass etching experience before moving on to the glasses. Good thing I bought 4 test glasses. Go go gadget foresight!
