For gifts this Christmas, I'm making Urban Camping Baskets (aka Smore gift baskets).

I'm including Grahams, Mallows and Chocolate. Plus skewers, candle and matches.

I am also giving some hot chocolate and a mug that I hand painted.

hello again! time to post some crafty pictures. this is just an altoid tin i decorated for matt. the guy in my last post about this altoid tin. :) it's nothing special, but it comes from the heart, so i'm hoping he'll like it. i made the magnetic poetry on top, so that's extra crafty. i guess.. even though it's kind of lopsided.. haha. okay. they are kind of terrible quality...

i've just bought fusible interfacing for the first time, and i don't have anybody handy to tell me which side is the treated side. i'm assuming the smooth side? will it fuse well to felt (it should, but just double checking)?

I've been making homemade balms for a while now, and I'm loving it :) My brother likes to use them too, because he says they really help his chapped lips. The problem though is that they look really glossy on, so he only wears them at home.

So my question is: What would you suggest to use to make the balms more "Guy Friendly"? I've seen places like Little Shop of Beauty or My Lip Stuff that have guy friendly balms that have no shine. I'm afraid that if I make it more waxier and use less oil, then it will be tough to put on and feel gross.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated :)

Thanks!

What the heck is barbados sugar?
I'm trying to make cookies for chirstmas, and one of the recipies asks for barbados sugar. Is that like brown sugar? It's a gingerbread recipie, so that's what I thought it could be...I'm not sure though.

So I decided that I want to make my boyfriend a quilt for x-mas out of all his old band shirts (nothing like waiting until the last minute). So I cut them all out and then my friend asked if I had bought fusable interfacing for them yet. I didn't realize I needed to. So I went to the store and bought a bunch and even have that already cut out. Then I looked up directions online for making t-shirt quilts (which I should have done before I did anything else). Aperantly I was suposed to iron on the interfacing before I cut out the shirts. So here is my question: should I even bother ironing it on now. Is it really nessesary. Have any of you made a t-shirt quilt? Did you use interfacing? The problem is that I don't even have an iron or the money to go buy one so if I absolutely must have interfacing then I don't think this will get done in time for x-mas. Oh and to make matters worse when my friend who told me I needed the interfacing saw that I bought white interfacing she freak out and said I relaly should have bought balck (because most of the shirts are balck). I didn't even know there was such a thing as black interfacing, there wasn't any at either of the fabric store I went to. Ack. Any help/advice would be greatly apriciated.

Hey! I don't have time to go through the archives and find the link and I'm not on my computer! Ahh. Does anyone know what site it is that sold like...pictures/wallhangings (I can't remember exactly) made from vintage patterns? That is the basic "theme" (though I don't really do themes) I'm planning for when I move into my own place (*Crosses fingers* hopefully soon).

THANKS SO MUCH anyone who knows!

Hello everyone! I've never really posted here, I'm more of a lurker. I love this community though, all of you people are so creative! :)

And now, here is my grand question: Does anybody have any cute and crafty ideas for things I could make my friends for Christmas?

Thanks, I appreciate all of your help. :)
[identity profile] spiffstress.livejournal.com
Christmas Stockings! )
I made Christmas stockings for my husband and I out of red pinwale corduroy and felt. You can't tell from the picture, but the white felt is actually glitter felt. I free-handed the pattern and sewed everything with a zigzag stitch on my sewing machine. I might add some gold puffy paint accents to it, but we'll see...just thought I'd share.

So, I took the advice from the Craftgrrls a few weeks ago on how to make a fleece beanie (I believe it's in the memories now). I played around with the ideas and eventually just ended up tracing around a beanie I already had and sewed two of those traced pieces together along the top, then hemmed the bottom. It turned out really well :). I had a ton of fleece left (after making three for my friends for gifts)...so I kind of improvised a striped scarf by sewing together blocks of two colors, sewing those in half and then turning it inside out and fringing the ends.

One hat and the scarf... )

With a coupon from Jo-Ann's it only cost abuot five dollars for all the fleece...enough to make three beanies and this scarf, and I believe I have enough left to make one more hat.

This are the first things I've sewed on my sewing machine, so I'm quite proud :). Thanks for the great ideas!

This may have been covered, but I can't find anything about it in the memories... are there paints/sealants that are okay to use on boxes and things that will hold cookies/breads/other edibles?

I discovered a $10 gift certificate to Sears buried in my stuff. Seeing as I have a Kenmore from the '60's, I want to try getting a new foot as a treat. I know the parts are compatible.

I do a lot of garment sewing and would like to emulate a serger. I already have a zipper foot and a rolling foot and a buttonhole attachment. I was looking into maybe something to help me with knits too. Sears has piping feet, cording feet, applique feet, and hemming feet, to name a few.

What kind would you get?? (not necessarily one of the ones I listed, because there could be other kinds that they carry, like a walking foot.)

I was just talking to my kids, trying to think of a small and inexpensive gift they could give to their friends. I have recently fell in love with the joys of making glycerin soap, so we have it everywhere! We are going to take a bar of soap and wrap it up appropriatly, get a new washrag and a rubber duckie and put them in a small Dollar Store basket.

Wah-lah! A cute last minute gift!

Oh my.

Well, after watching the community for quite some time, I finally got a journal, so I figured I'd post. I also just received a digital camera for my birthday, so I'll be posting some more pictures soon.

First, though, I thought I'd show off my bulletin board. My mom made it with some cork and a border.

This is my first try at homemade Christmas presents. My two best friends are going to be elementary school teachers, so I made them some of these crazy crayons.

To make these, peel the paper off some old crayons (or use a brand new box of Crayola 96 colors like I did!) Using a sharp, non-serrated knife, chop them up into pieces about as big as your fingernail. You don't want them really small- they will crumble, and believe me, it's a mess.

Now you take some nonstick muffin pans, the kind for tiny muffins. Place your crayon pieces in there in whatever color combinations you want. The metallic ones look really cool. Fill them up, because they get a lot smaller when you cook them. Put them in the oven at 200 F for about 15-20 minutes, or until all the chunks melt. Take them out, let them cool a bit and then put them in the freezer- they will shrink a bit and pop right out.
[identity profile] dykestar.livejournal.com
I want to do that thing where you salvage old pairs of too-tight jeans by splitting open the side-seams and adding a strip of fabric. Only question is, is it as easy as it looks or is there a trick to it? Also, would a regular machine just need a jeans-needle or would it cause my machine to scream in pain?

Just wondering...
[identity profile] trenthamfamily.livejournal.com
You guys inspired me so much this weekend. Just the ideas that you all put on here.

My husband thought I was nuts when I came home with a bunch of fleece in two different patterns. One black and the other in this crazy kitten and puppy pattern.

The results? Something that I saw on this site and I'm beyond beaming over it! And my 5 year old likes it a little too.

Someone posted a couple weeks ago about making bracelets from the marbles used in marble magnets. I found a picture bracelet kit but it is kind of expensive. Where can I get the metal braclets to glue the marbles onto or should I just get the kit? I think they use plastic domes so it would be lighter. OR is there another way to do this? Help!

Hi Everyone - I just posted this as a comment & I thought that it was pretty important info that everyone who has a sewing machine could use. Follow these instructions when your tension is off & you can't seem to set it with the top dial.

Most people don't realize that the bobbin (or boobin) has it's own tension settings. The way to tell if it is off is to take out the threaded bobbin holder and pull out about 6" of thread. Hold the thread to dangle the bobbin & give it a little tug. If the bobbin falls to the ground or doesn't move at all it is too loose or tight. Adjust the screw either to the left or to the right (to tighten or loosen the bobbin), and try it again. Keep testing it by dangling & tugging (hah) until it gives a little and falls about a quarter of an inch down the thread - this is optimum bobbin tension. Once you've rethreaded your machine set your upper tension to 5 (or whatever the middle tension is for your machine) and adjust it slowly, usually you will find you only need to turn it slightly. You will quickly get a feel for doing this & will be sewing with perfect tension all the time.

I hope this makes sense to everyone. If anyone needs more help just ask & I will try to explain.

- Adrienne

Im having a problem with my damn sewing machine... so for any of you who sew, i will LOVE you if you could help me out...

When i sew, the thread on the bottom of the fabric ( coming from the bobbin) is all snarled & loose.
Im assuming this has something to do with the tension being off, but ive turned every damn knob on the machine and its not helping.

Please help me before i heave the piece of shit out the window!

christmas question. yes, one more, sorry!

okay, so i'm totally clueless as what i could make for my boyfriend's mom, his sister, and my best friend's mom. any ideas? here's some info to help you ladies and gents out:

boyfriend's mom: she's a religious person. she's christian and goes to church alot. i was thinking maybe i could make her a sort of journal to write down passages in and notes and such? good idea? she also likes to cook alot.

boyfriend's sister: she's really busy. she works at a bank then goes to school at a business college. she also likes to read a lot.

best friend's mom: she just moved into a new house with my friend. any house warming gifts i could make? she also seems like a crafty lady.

thanks as always guys!

Hey crafty gals,

I was hoping you could inspire me or help me think of some good ideas for a gift for my boyfriend's parents. They just built a cabin up north, so I thought I could make them something for that. However, I can't really think of any ideas, since I'm not much of a camping girl myself. So, I was hoping you could help! Thank's a bunch!

PS: Any idea's are welcome, it doesn't have to just be cabin-related!

hopefully we can make this baby good enough for the what can I do with.. section of the FAQ. I was looking through an old chest of stuff from my childhood and came across so much great stuff...but the one thing that really caught my attention and started making my head tick was my brownie sash with all those silly little patches sewn on. What on earth I should do with them, I have no idea. But I just have a gut feeling they have potential. Now I was a naughty brownie and didn't get too many patches but that's not an issue..thrift stores to the rescue!

I have a tiny tiny apartment with the old smaller closets, and want to learn to use a sewing machine and make more things.
Does anyone have one of the mini sewing machines(NOT the handy/easy stitch piece of junk), and know if it is strong enough to sew through vinyl? I've had the strong desire lately to make my own album cover bags and am planning on buying a grommeter to start the making process, but just wanted to know if I could sew the bags too. Any other ideas for doing the sides of the bag? I could always seal the pictures with contact paper if it came down to that.

Other than that, this week I'm going to be making bath bombs, candy cane bath salts, truffles, the super cute mice chocolates and whatever else I come up with.

Thanks as usual for the inspiration!

so! the holiday season is overhead and underfoot, and although i get occasional waves of panic, im really loving it. this year has proved far more festive than those past. i've made about 60 marble magnets (if anyone has access to a Pottery Barn Teen catalogue, its marble magnet material heaven) that im giving to e.v.e.r.y.b.o.d.y.
making my own hot chocolate has been...delicious :) i've been adding cinnamon to some of the mixes, and crushed peppermint to some of the others. it jazzes them up a bit, and add a lot to the flavour. yum.
i'm also modifying a guitar strap for my boyfriend, something i mentioned in a previous post. i'm going to sew bits of fabric to the front and stick pins on there and such, and i wanted to pad the back. but, the question comes now: what should i pad it with? i was thinking monster fur but i don't know where i'd find any of that. something that will be comfortable on his shoulder, supporting the weight of a guitar. nice and cushy. ideas? anything? anyone? <3 you ladies...making the holidays so much easier, and so much more fun!

ok, i want to make a guitar strap from scratch.

i checked out the memories but didn't find anything helpful. i can sew pretty well (my sewing machine is out of commission, but i would hope i could do this by hand without a problem...just a little more time), and i have a bunch of different types of fabric.

i don't have another guitars strap to go by, and i'd really like to make one completely from scratch, as opposed to buying one and modifying it in any way.
[identity profile] lexscreations.livejournal.com
Please check it out in my journal (I have the pics separated out in 4 different posts since there are quite a few of them). I had a lot of fun making the Chanukah/Jewish jewelry and am thinking about making lots more of it and making a whole section of my web site just for Judaica. The stars of David are really fun and relatively easy to make. I'd really like to try to make hamsas (the upside-down hand symbols), and maybe at some point try to make a mezuzah as well...I'll have to see how far I can take this. :)

Anyone else make Judaica of some sort?
