Another dreaded marble magnet question
Dec. 19th, 2003 12:17 amIs Bond 257 less noxiously fumey than E 6000? I just don't know if I can use the E 6000 that I bought on my marble magnets. I have a neurological disorder already and can't risk too much more damage, LOL.
Fairy Gardens
Dec. 19th, 2003 01:07 amOk I just made the cutest thing ever. So sorry that I am without a digital cam... So I will explain it!
I had a really pretty jar. I filled it with layers of the following:
glitter
dried rosebuds (any flowers would do)
marbles
bells
a really cute pink fake flower in the middle
sea shell fragments
I decoupaged "Kelly's fairy garden" around the bottom of the jar and Voila! Instant fairy garden. Very cute. Very easy. Very giftable (although useless in a practical manner).
I might make up a little story card to attach that says something about how fairies visit the garden to grow wishes, or some tripe like that...
And the best part? I got to use stuff that I have tons of lying around! Whoo hoo!
:-)

a question about marble magnets:
can i use pva glue to stick the pictures on? i know silicon glue is ideal, but i can't find any round here and it's too late to order online
thanks!

Dec. 19th, 2003 01:19 amAlright, here's my idea...
I'm making a guitar strap for my father for Christmakkuh (yes, I'm half and half). My plan is to ink jet print small black + white pictures of all his favorite albums onto fabric. Basically, so it's one long strap of album covers.
What I'm wondering is this: Will a cotton-blend fabric and a simple layer or two of fusible interfacing be sturdy enough for the strap?
Or should I just sew the fabric onto a store-bought strap?
Thanks again for your help!

Kids crafts!
Dec. 19th, 2003 03:03 amI found this site today: Kids' Christmas crafts but they have sections for TONS of other holidays I'm just skimming and already I see Hannukah and Kwanzaa, so you pretty much have your late-december holidays covered unless you've got some pagan kids around :D) and other categories like puppets, whales, cats, frogs, frames, etc. It looks awesome.
ALSO! For people who like shrinkydinks! Go to http://shrinksample.com; you can supposedly get a free sample from that webpage but I couldn't figure it out. I'm going to call their number tomorrow!

Dec. 19th, 2003 08:14 amI've completed my first scarf!!! Yay me!!! YES, for you experienced knitters, it IS only a solid colored, chunky yarned, big stitched, run-of-the-mill scarf... But it's *mine*!!! *I* did it!!! Hehe. I'm excited, anyway. :o)

Mr. Blobby!
Dec. 19th, 2003 08:52 am
Mr. Blobby! This was the first felt project I did. I forgot to take pictures and post them earlier because I wrapped it immediately after making it and gave it to my boyfriend for his birthday (early November). But then I remembered to bring my camera and take pictures of it when I was at his house, so there he is. Made of felt, sewed int he sewing machine not too greatly, and stuffed with poly-fil.
He's related to Mr. Slimy. :)
more christmas cards
Dec. 19th, 2003 08:58 amoh, right. i've done a lot of stuff and haven't posted pictures. i made more holiday cards -- this is the set i made for my boyfriend to give out. he asked if i had any with snowmen, and i didn't, but i made a couple of them. the rest are all "winter wonderland". i also made a "winter disasters" prototype card --- it had a house on the front with snow falling, then on the inside a ton of snow and you could just barely see the roof, and the words "hope the holidays aren't too much for you this year!" --- i didn't get to take pictures of that though.
anyway, here are more of the cards i did behind the lj-cut. and also, an envelope i did for my friend because i just like how i wrote the "to" and "from" part to look like stitches. ha ha ha.
( +3 )
ALSO.... and gosh i hope my boyfriend doesn't secretly come onto craftgrrl because this is part of his holiday gift ---- in addition to a little book about us with pictures, i took a bottle (from cold coffee) that i had and filled it with little fortune-style papers. each one has an off-the-top-of-my-head reason why i love him, or thing i love about us and our relationship. xmas eve = special day for us, it's our "i-love-you-versary" ha ha.. #1! pictures of the book after christmas, as promised in a previous post, but here's pictures of the bottle. i didn't do too much besides just make the strips of paper, but i think it turned out cute. inside that bottle are 4 pages of paper cut into strips. O_o i had a LOT of trouble stuffing it and making sure it all fit.

Dec. 19th, 2003 09:20 amOkay, I looked at the memories section already, and it's not there so...
I'm looking for something I can do with crayons. I recently got a box of 24 crayons. They were like 10 cents on sale. They are poor quality, and don't show hardly any color when you write with them. I'm wondering what kind of projects I can do with the crayons. Anything at all would be great.

Dec. 19th, 2003 12:09 pmhello,
i've been lurking for quite a awhile, and i have to say that i am very impressed with a lot of the ideas ya'll have been posting and because of reading all of your posts, i have been inspired a lot more lately to get back into my crafty sate of mind. for x-mas, money is tight so i have been spending a lot of time making my gifts. i decided to post a pic of my latest creation. i really enjoy collaging, so i cut out some carboard squares, pasted magazine pics on them and used packing tape to seal them up and voila, you have homemade coasters. of course, they should only be used for cold beverages as the tape might melt under hot circumstances. nonetheless, i had fun and perhaps you might have some advice, comments or be inspired to make a version of your own =)

bottle cap pictures?
Dec. 19th, 2003 12:11 pmso this weekend i want to make my nieces resin-filled bottle cap pendant necklaces similar to this for x-mas. the problem is that they are 20, 17, 14 and 12, and i'm not. i think they think my taste is too "uncool" for them! does anyone have any suggestions for pictures to put into the bottle cap that might be considered "cool" by them? thanks!
When you crotchet a balnket or scarf or anything that you want to have a fringed edge, How do you ad the fringe?
It it just a matter of tieing on pieces or yarn to make the fringe or it it stitched on somehow?
(as you can tell by the seemingly simple question...i am still new at this)

I just made this belt from a tie a few minutes ago. It was super simple and only took a few minutes. The tie was only $1.99 from the thrift store (I guess some guy once liked pink ties :). Then just some D rings and velcro from Jo Anns.

I just finished the last day of school before break. I gave presents to my friends and to my teachers. To my surprise, THEY LOVED THEM. Like went crazy. I was like uhh.. you're welcome! (I guess I didn't expect such a reaction.)
Well anyway for my friends I made cute-functional gifts. All of my friends are taking chemistry this year so I made apron/goggle bags! Just a simple draw-string bag big enough for lab safety gear. Much easier to carry them. I also made marble magnets.. yes i know they are so popular here, but my friends arn't big crafters and they were AMAZED at them. I couldn't believe it. People kept asking "WOW HOW DID YOU MAKE THOSE". I just thought they would be cute for lockers.
for my teachers, I did 1 chocolate spoon, 4 chocolate pretzles, 1 chocolate (cherry-hershey kiss) mouse. I put them in the bottom part of your basic origami box and covered with celophane. My teachers reactions were similar to my friends'! I'll remember this in the future... Teachers love chocolate!
I guess its just simple things like "did you make this box!!! that is so cute!" It makes me feel really good about giving gifts like that.
thanks for reading sorry if this is long.. happy holidays!

beginner's knitting question.
Dec. 19th, 2003 04:28 pmOk, so I bought myself an "I taught myself KNITTING" book at Michael's. Yay for the 40% off coupon btw.. it cost $9.99, and then I bought mini-ornaments for my mini-tree which were on sale at 40% off and my total price came out to like, $9.73. I felt good. Ha ha.
ANYWAY, I struggled for a second, but I think I'm going fairly quickly at this. Probably because I know how to crochet, so that knowledge is helping. I've just cast on 20 stitches (HOORAH!) and completed one row of the knit stitch.
...
NOW what? It says to do the next row, "simply" turn the work around until the right side is facing me.
(BTW, I'm teaching myself continental style.)
All the stitches went from the left needle to the right needle. So they're sittin' there on the right needle. Does that mean I just switch needles in my hands, so the stitches are on the left again, and then work it from there? I don't quite understand what to do next.

removing glued pics from scrapbook
Dec. 19th, 2003 05:11 pmI'm putting my fathers old pictures from a worn out scrapbook into a brand new scrapbook. But the pictures seem pretty well glued down... What's the best way to remove them without damaging the pictures?

Dec. 19th, 2003 06:03 pmHi grrls! This is my first post, though I've made a handful of comments. I'll have a ton of pics to show you of all of the fun stuff I've been crafting once the holidays are over, but in the meantime, I stumbled upon these earrings today. I figure they'd be super-easy to make if you can get ahold of some fake fruit!

Check out more similar stuff at Fred Flare. I'm sure some of us could easily pull some of this cool stuff off!

Dec. 19th, 2003 09:06 pmI'm really for asking so many dumb questions. But if you'd be kind enough to help me brainstorm, I'd greatly appreciate it.
Okay, so today I was in Michaels.. To pick up ONE thing. (Ha! never happens..) So anyway, I know what I'm going to do with the other 50 items I managed to pick up, but I picked up 8 squares of felt for 10 cents a piece. I have 2 of each: magenta, black, light pink, and white. Now the question.. What the hell do I do with it? It just seemed right at the time:)
I'd really like to make my boyfriend something out of it..but what? If this helps any..he's a guitarist, likes to draw, drama, kevin smith films, bright eyes, comic books and me:)
Please! I'm open to anything because I'm completely braindead right now!
Thanks sooo much!

Candle Holders!
Dec. 19th, 2003 09:20 pmA couple weeks ago I was at Joann's and I saw some pretty candle holders with kind of a Moroccan feel. They were priced around $5-6 bucks, and I said, "hell, I can make those". So tonight I went to Walmart and bought a bunch of plain glass votives for 57 cents each and some ribbon by the yard and went to town. I haven't done the math, but I'm guessing it came down to maybe $1.25-$1.50 each to make one of these. I'm quite pleased with the results.
(The beaded lamp in this picture was also a Joann's find. I think it was like $10. I picked ribbon and beaded fringe for the candles to match it.)

Dec. 19th, 2003 11:00 pmI succumbed to
craftgrrl pressure & made marble magnets. Why didn't anyone tell me how cheap these were to make?! Hee hee...

Plus I needed an accessory to match my black corset & skirt, so some lace & a bell became...

I only knew how to sew it on with black cotton (including the adjustable clasp). In desperate need of jewellery making lessons.

Dec. 19th, 2003 11:23 pmcompletely finished the gift baskets! :D
my nan and granddads basket:

( a not very great photo of the 4 baskets together )
each one contains:
a 1 litre jar of hot chocolate mix, decorated with a bow and curling ribbon
4 candy canes [i decided not to half dip them in chocolate after all]
8 different [i think!] chocolate spoons
a bag of multicoloured marshmallows
:D doesn't sound much when i put it like that...heh...looks good though!
