I once saw this paint made for glass that you spray on and it looks like a mirror on the other side. I wanted to try it but cant seem to find it anywhere. It was in the glass staining section at the craft store, but its gone now. Anyone ever used this stuff?

ok so here it is...yay! so exciting...oh man does sarcasm not work in text! o well...here's the crummy picture... I finally finished it, and I'm finally posting pictures of it...even though i've been wearing them around since x-mas (i finished them on  x-mas eve day). I'm pretty happy with them. I've gotten some comments from ppl who've seen me wearing them saying that they would buy one from me and how much am i selling them for. Also everyone wants it in the same color... the picture doesn't do it justice but...here ya go....it's a lovely HOT PINK color...and fuzzy my X said it looks soft like a towel (which i think he meant as a good compliment). it's the last pic in my gallery, the skinny sort of yellowish looking one

ok totally off topic...but any of you ever watch "far and away"? The guy that plays "stephen" the guy in love with nicole kidman (not tom cruise the other guy, the snooty one) is he the same guy as the guy who plays greg on dharma and greg?

Ribbon bag

I made a bag over the holidays to give as a belated Christmas present to one of my dearest friends, Leah. I got the pattern from a book called Complete Craft by Katherine Sorrell. I think that I will post the instructions later (right now I'm preparing to go to my first day of my last semester of University). I wove different widths of ribbons to make the pattern. This bag is really easy in that you get a professional-looking lining without having to bother with all the turning inside out and pulling through holes stuff that you normally do.
Here's some photos )

I'm trying to make a blanket as a present for my mom. my problem is I'm trying to do a block of cream in the middle surrounded by a blue green border. basically like the swatch, but much, much bigger.
swatch and rambling questions cut for your sanity ) crossposted. sorry.

Has anyone here tried one of those serger attachments for sewing machines, like this one:
http://www.allbrands.com/products/abp03546.html
It's supposed to screw on to any mechanical sewing machine, and will turn it into a serger. Is this too good to be true?

Also, I'm looking to buy an upgraded sewing machine. I sew too much for the basic machine I have now. (an older Singer, good for light sewing, but not so good for the heavy fabrics and furs I sew)
One model I'm looking at is the White 2999 machine, has anyone here used it? Another model is the Elna 3007, but at around 500$, it's a little out of my range, unless it's really worth the difference. The memories seemed to talk only about basic machines, I hope I didn't miss this topic, if I did, sorry, point me at it please.

And if I wanted to sell my beginner machine, is there a community you guys know of to post it on?

Thank you!

I've started attempting to make purses lately. I made 2 and they came out well. Perhaps I'll post pictures of them eventually.

Anyways I'm going to be making a black bag for a friend and I want to attach silver ribbon to the outside of it.

My question is: what sorts of things can I do with this ribbon? In what ways can I decorate the outside of the bag with it?

While I was making the sunshine basket for my friend, I realized that the clear plastic cd shaped circles that come on top and bottom of stacks of blank cd's to protect them are PERFECT for making suncatchers- I used gallery glass faux stained glass paint and threaded fishing line through the hole in the center to hang it.. they turned out really cute.
I gave her her basket today and she loved it- I just forgot to take a picture of the suncatcher... I'll have to get one next time I'm at her house!

After seeing all the pretty scarves and hats here, i decided to get some stuff and try knitting myself. I started out ok, but i didn't want to just make squares or other useless type yarn blobs...then i looked at my dog, brandi, and it hit me:

Knitting

I would love to learn how to knit, I work very full time and work in a different state than where I live so I have a long commute by train...and it would be nice to learn how to knit and have something to do on the train :) My problem is since I don't get home at a descent hour, it would be hard to take a knitting class. Can anyone recommend any good books or anything else that would be a great introduction to knitting?

Hi grrls, I'd like to dress up our car for the wedding by tying a giant gift bow on the roof. Any ideas on how to do that? I'm thinking swathes of fabric and fabric stiffener. Would be grateful for directions / suggestions.
[identity profile] samuraigrrrl.livejournal.com
i've found this pattern in a box of my grandmother's sewing notions. it was issued in the 1940's to the best of my knowledge. from the illustrations it is not obvious, but the back reads, "maternity wrap-around house dress". the instructions suggest for fabric options: silk, rayon crepe, taffeta (heehee! shiny pregnant princess!), spun rayon, faille, seersucker, chambray, cotton broadcloth (hey, who you callin' a broad?), pique, chintz, percale, shantung. the original cover is in color, but i didn't want to influence anyone. my one and only reason for posting this here is to ask all of you wonderful ladies and gents for some fabric suggestions. color? design? material? anything you give me will be taken into consideration. wait, i had two reasons for posting. the second reason is just to warm you guys up for when i post the finished dress! fire!

2 questions

[identity profile] aintlifegrand.livejournal.com
ok i have 2 questions for you folks...

1 - someone had posted a t-shirt quilt a while ago and there was some discussion about adding some sort of backing to the t-shirt material so it woudln't stretch out... what is this stuff called? is it just interfacing?

2 - does anyone have any tie dye tips or know of any tutorials online?

I posted photos of a ribbon bag that I made for my best gal pal Leah. This is the very first thing I've sewed, and the first pattern/instructions that made much sense to me. So I'm hoping this might be ventured forth as a good bag pattern for beginner sewers. Of course, experienced sewers would definitely have fun with this, too. This bag can be adapted to different colours (as I did) and even without ribbons. The instructions are shamefully stolen directly from the book Complete Craft by Katherine Sorrell (which is a pretty neat book if you're looking for some new projects).
Here are the instructions )

My husband is a bonified "craftboy". He painted this set for his mom for Christmas. They are all acrylic paint on 12x12 a stretched canvas.

....and i painted this one for his cousin, who is as big of an Eddie Izzard fan as i am :) It was all i could do not to keep it. It's acrylic paint on 11x14 stretched canvas.

alright. i am making a purse that looks like this. )

I bought fabric, and its kinda weak fabric. like shirt fabric. I never made anything other than a heart, with sewing stuff. the liner stuff is orange and the outside is green.

the bowl and the oranges, i bought felt to match the colors of the bowl and the oranges in the picture.

the green fabric that i bought is dark green.

and the whole reason I'm making this purse is because one of my favorite songs is called "bowl of oranges" by bright eyes... and i'm not sure if there is anything else i can do to make this cool. i don't usually use purses but if i like this one then i will use it.

any ideas on how to sew this thing? my mom has a crappy little sewing machine but i dont think she'll let me use it unless i beg so much. i don't mind hand sewing. but i just dont know how to put it together or anything basically.

any other ideas on how to make the bag more creative or something?

anything will be appreciated.

Because so many people have been asking for these lately....

Here's the directions.

I would suggest checking this if you're putting in the lining.

Tips
[identity profile] chocodog.livejournal.com
Hey there. I made some of these journalsCLICK HERE FOR PIC and the people I gave them to liked them I think. This one is probably the least creative, but I gave all the good ones away for Christmas. (This one is mine). I get the books at St. Vinnies, and cut the spine off with a razor blade. Then I punch some 5.5 x 7.5 inch paper (cut for like $2 at kinkos) with my regular hole puncher. I lined it up on the cover, marked where the holes should be and drilled through with a 1.4" drill bit. Then I went over the cover holes again with a manual hand puncher to smooth out the edges. In some, I put all the pages of the book, to be used as section dividers. In others, I collaged pics from the book, and cut them with jagged overhanging edges so they stuck out past the regular pages. Then I put the whole thing together with loose leaf rings 1" or 1.5" depending on the amount of paper. Add some glitter to the cover, and you're all set to go. They're fun to make. Sorry if they're too stupid for the craft club. I like 'em and I'm proud. Thought I would share. Thanks. :)

I'm looking to make a dress. So far I've made pants and skirts successfully without a pattern, I think I may be able to wing a dress. The problem is, however, that I'm not sure what line/cut to use. I'm a short, chunky girl with a big butt, big boobs, and wide shoulders, so sleeveless is probably not a good idea... maybe an A-line with short sleeves and a slightly off the shoulder neckline? Or a V-neck...I'm probably going to use a baby pink cotton blend fabric and dress it up with some lace and cute pockets... What line/cut should I use?
