Hi I'm new to the community. My names Karli and I love crafts! umm duh huh hehehe. Anyways I just had a baby one month ago so I am a stay at home mom, and I am planning on making crafts to sell at the craft fairs in my home town in Cali. I just love looking through these posts and getting ideas. I'm hoping one day to get a pottery wheel and make custom dishes. Anyways blah not to bore you I have a question. When I was like 12 I went to this class and we frosted mirrors with acid, they had bought mirrors and cut them with a glass cutter, I was wondering where I might be able to find mirror like that, also a glass cutter. I am pretty sure they have the acid at michaels. anyways Thanks!

I know we have a lot of gals that do trades, sales and whatnot. I also know that some of those transactions go bad. I was thinking about this because of [livejournal.com profile] evilpinkbear's Bad Luck, and on [livejournal.com profile] bunnyhoover's experiences.

So I thought it would be nice to compile a post about how to deal with this, and try to get the items you trade/bought and who you can contact. This seems to happen sometimes on purpose, or because of ignorance. Either way I thought it would be nice to round up ideas. I am going to start a new faq section called "bad business" so we can keep track of our experiences, etc.

I know if it's a business you can go to the Better Business Bureau and file a complaint. This is also a good place to look up businesses you are thinking of purchasing from before you buy anything.

If it's a case of obvious fraud through the mail in the US you can go to US Postal Inspector and file a fraud charge.

I would love to hear about other countries as well. I know I can't be the only one that mail orders from practically everywhere. So please if you know how to resolve these unfortunate situations will you post a link to the institution, and an explanation?

**Edit**
I forgot to mention, I felt this was very on topic for the community because so many of us mail order supplies, or run small businesses. I know I couldn't create as much as I do in my small town without mail ordering half the stuff I use.

this isn't craft related, but it relates to someone i decided to trade with through craftgrrl, and i'm hoping all the craftgrrls (and boys) can help me out.

it's things like that, that make me never want to do mail trades again.

During recent obsessions with the movie "About A Boy" and the fine musician who is responsible for the soundtrack, Badly Drawn Boy, I realised I could no longer go on living without a beanie just like his.
Onward to the piccies! )

I apologize if this has been asked before, but I want to make my best friend a felt/fleece doll for her birthday. She is in love with Matt Skiba, so I thought it would awesome to make her a Matt Skiba doll. I don't want it to be too small, somewhere around the same size as a teddy bear.
The main problem is I can't find any patterns for making the body of a male doll and I do not own a sewing machine. Therefore, I plan on stitching it all by hand.

Does anyone know of any good websites with easy to follow male doll making instructions? And how easy is it to sew felt, or fleece by hand? If you have any tips, I would be so greatful..
oh and her birthday is in two weeks.

My LYS is having a fabulous sale on the J.P. Coats crochet nylon. I've found lots of patterns for purses, and I'm working on the second purse with it. I was wondering if anyone had any other ideas/patterns for things to make with it.

Memo Board

I finally decided on what I want to make my sister for part of her graduation present (a bit early, but I wanted it to be special). I want to make her a memo board, probably a magnetic one. Should I use a sheet of wood and paint it with the magnetic paint or buy a peice of sheet metal? Also, I want to decopauge it with pictures of us and our family, so I have a few questions about that. Would I be able to decopauge over the metal? They're mostly digital photos, what kind of paper should I use to print them on? Photo paper, normal paper, is there a special paper? I'm new to decopauging, which explains all the questions. Any other thoughts or ideas are welcome. Thanks in advance!

Wheee!

So I finished my bridesmaid jewelry and the boxes to put them in, so I decided to start on my flowergirl basket.

I painted a simple $3.99 basket from Michael's with inexpensive white gloss spray paint from Walmart. After it dried a couple of days (I'm usually REALLY IMPATIENT with drying paint. I dunno why), I decided today, since I was home sick, to poke my paper flower picks through. I bought two $7 packages of paper rose picks from Michael's, thinking I'd only need one. Boy was I wrong! Their little heads kept popping off when I poked them through. I think I killed about ten of them. This is what I have so far. The only thing left is to wind the ribbon (and maybe some pearls and stuff left over from the jewelry) around the handle, leaving a few inches to drape down.

Here's what I have so far... )

I'm wearing the shirt backwards so I could take the picture. The lettering actually goes on the back.
Also, the shirt is black, not navy blue.

Hey all! I have been hanging around here for a while admiring everyones crafty-ness and its really amazing, ever since I have gone into highschool in an enhanced program I have had no time to create anything- however now I am on March break and have a week of nothing to due (due to lack of friends in town)

So I have a lot of denim and old clothes and such, what can I do with it. I have a special high-tech embroidery sewing machine and lots of crafty stuff (or rather, my mom does) So thats not a problem! Maybe a lunchbox type thing (not of denim though) Thanks girls!

Necklace

I have this shark tooth necklace, but I don't really like the clasp & several beads that accompany it. It's also on a tan cord, and I'd rather have black.

Therefore, I want to take it apart and just slip the tooth charm onto a black cord [I'm thinking the waxy/leathery type.. I forget what it is exactly, but I'm sure I can find it in the bead aisle of any craft store].

My question is on the clasp. What would be the most affective way to "tie" my necklace? I'd prefer to NOT buy some gaudy clasp, because I have short enough hair that it would most often be noticable, and I just don't find them attractive. BUT I also want to be able to take the necklace off. So, are there any special knots I can use, or maybe something like tying a black bead to one end and some sort of loop on the other?

Thanks!

I was bored last night, and rather than sit there watching South Park and munching on girlscout cookies, I felt it would be best to do something constructive.

I learned to cast on and knit tonight!!! I did 5 rows with 10 stitches and it actually looks like something!

I've been trying to learn since the holidays, and nothing made sense until I went to the Vogue site. These pictures made it make sense to me.

I'm so in awe of all of you on this list; you make so many cool things.
