Ok, here's my back story: I just found out my mother is buying me a sewing machine for my birthday. There's a huge sewing machine sale going on at JoAnn's, etc this weekend, so we're going to go look for one. I read through the memories, and I paged back through a bunch of posts as well.

Ok, from all the memories and paging back, it seems that the recommended names are Brother, Bernina, Pfaff, Viking Husqvarna, and White.

My question is: which brand of the above-mentioned ones is the best? I don't need a TON of stitches, but I would like more than the basics. Also, I need it to sew through thick layers of material just as easily as it can sew through thin light layers of material. I don't think price will be much of an issue, just as long as it's not a ton of money (over $500, I'd say). *edit* I would also like it to be super-reliable (since the closest machine-service-type shop is like 2 hours away).

Thank you all, and I'm sorry to be annoying for asking yet *another* sewing machine question.

*EDIT* Thank you to everyone who helped me out with my question!! I went to the JoAnn's sale today and got a White Model 2037. The lady working there said it was all metal (except the plastic outside covering) and it could sew through like 6-8 layers of denim, no problem. It's got lots of stitches, and a 10-year warrenty. I almost got the Husqvarna Viking, but it was $200 more and only had a few extra features/perks (plus the lady there said White was made by the Husqvarna Viking people, so it was just as durable, just not as fancy and you had to oil it or something)

Thanks again everyone! (I love you all)

I just joined the other day and figured it was time to make my introductory post! I'm Stacy, 23, Canada, and I've grown up being crafty, creative and artistic. I drew a lot when I was a kid (still do when I find the time, being an adult sucks sometimes) I was in Brownies and Guides (same thing as girl scouts almost) and we always did tons of crafts then. I took art all through high school even tho it was an elective that I didn't need because I was already in band. Since high school I've been getting more into sewing and this past Christmas I got my own sewing machine! :D The project I've been working on now is making an outfit for my grandparent's 50th anniversary tea/mini family reunion. I'm making a white corset inspired, tube top type strapless top and a tie skirt. I've actually been working on the tie skirt for a while (but took a break because I ran out of ties) but then I figured if I put a white top with it it would look great and be perfect for that event. I'm also going to be bringing my black 3/4 length sleeved button front collared dress shirt just in case it's not as warm as I expect it to be (its on June 5th, but there is no accounting for the weather here). I've read back a few entries and checked out some of the memories and it seems everyone does their tie skirts differently - but thats cool, I'm all for diversity - I will try to post pictures of mine when it gets done. This looks like a really awesome community and I'm really looking forward to being a part of it :)

This might seem like a silly question, but what are shrinky dinks?
Also, is it all right to use a muffin tin as a candle mold?

Okay, so I decided I am going to knit. --never mind the fact that it is warm and sunny outside, with only more of that to come. I want to knit a fuzzy eyelash fringe scarf. I want it to be thin and long, so it can be worn just with a top on chilly days.

I haven't knitted in years, but I think I can figure it out (let's hope). My questions are these: what size needles do I need to buy? do they sell this kind of fun yarn at wal-mart? should I double up the fun yarn with plain yarn and if so, what kind? is there a pattern I can follow?

Thanks!

So, I checked the memories, but I couldn't really find the answers I was looking for, but...

I recently started cross-stitching... I only used this one little kit that had some pretty thin thread. But now I got a bigger, more complicated kit, and I'm very, very confused...

The thread given in the kit is pretty thick, and is made up of a lot of smaller threads. I tried to work with the big threads, but it keeps unraveling and is really annoying. Am I supposed to separate the threads and use the thin ones, or am I doomed to going on the way I've been?

i found this "simple" shawl pattern, so i thought i'd give it a shot.

the first several rows looked perfect, but the longer it got, the more narrow it became. i followed the instructions - 2 ch, turn around. so i can't figure out what i'm doing wrong.

any brilliant suggestions? i'll love you forever.

hullo. i was just wondering if anyone has any links for making hair wraps out of embroidery thread. i have been googling, but i really haven't found too much on making them. my little sister has been pestering me for several years to do one for her (and with summmertime coming up, she is doing so again) i prefer to make one that is attached to her hair, but is there a way to attach them so that it doesn't have to be cut out?

I Found this Kool aid color chart for dyeing wool. Thought some of you might benefit from it if you hadn't seen it already. :)

Hi, I'm new. I wanted to post something so....

I have commisioned my friend [livejournal.com profile] ladyedaoin to crochet me a hat and scarf combo with a detachable flower because I myself am not as gifted with the hook as she is. I want the hat and scarf to be striped, but it's a particular kind of stripe. I have seen it done but I think it was an afghan that someone had made a long time ago. anyway. this is sort of what it looks like:

and the brow would be the "background" color. and I'm seeing it in double crochet so it isn't as tightly crochetd as the picture. does anyone know what I am talking about?

and as for the flower, how would you girls suggest attaching the flower? I want to be able to take it off and put it on the hat or the scarf.

I'd appreciate any help you guys can give me! thank you!

Yes, I realize this is my second time posting today, but I decided to work on a layout for this community. I also realize that I'm not a mod or anything of the sort but if the maintainer or a moderator would like to change it to this layout I'll gladly send you the codes. Also if any of you see something on this journal that you'd like to have done to your's and need some help you can leave a comment on my personal journal and I'll try my best to help you.

It was basically out of boredom and a creativity surge, that's as best as I can explain it. =)
