allright. i just obtained a vintage Singer sewing machine from 1958. Model: 185J. problem? no bobbins. the ones it came with are for like, every brand BUT singer. (i'm not really going to bitch about that though because it was free)

now, i've seen many places online to buy bobbins for model number 185. although mine is 185J, do you think they will still fit? i cannot find anything to buy specifically for the model i have. also, the one i have looks exactly like a regular 185.

and... i'd hate to waste five bucks on bobbins that don't friggen fit.

Darned if I didn't mean to post this earlier...if you're not sick of seeing Halloween costumes yet, feel free to take a look. Since I sewed everything that I made for it by hand, I'm pretty proud.

I suddenly had a party to go to and found out barely a week before Halloween, so I had to think of something that incorporated stuff that I had around the house and that I could make myself (since I rarely find any good 'plus-size' costumes while out shopping). I ended up sitting up each night after work in front of various horror movies and piecing this together:

My best accessory--can you believe that he used to be a pair of castoff pants?

The full "snake girl" outfit.

A closer look at the bodice, cut and sewed on piece-by-piece.

The snake, again, stretched out to show its shape [it was much more fun having a 'constrictor-type' boa, rather than the feathery kind...everyone was wearing it at some point that night :)].

The accessories: the shoes and tights, and snake-y cuffs (with green chrome nailpolish to match).

Plus, the snake makes for a great hat at the end of the night when you're sick of wearing it around your shoulders and hips!

Okay, I'm kind of embarrassed to have to ask this, but I bought a cross-stitch kit hoping that the pattern would be printed on the fabric. Well, it's not, and I have never done this before, so what the heck am I supposed to do? How do I get the pattern onto the cross-stitch fabric?? Please let it be easy..

My mom, John, Alex and I made cupcakes for a Halloween party.

My mom and I made the batter and decorated them. John put on the nerd sprinkles. Alex supervised. Our cupcakes were Yellow cake and Devil's food chocolate cake. I don't recall the brand. Some cupcakes were just yellow or chocolate others were mixed. Some had mini resses peanut butter cups in them, others had nerds in them and others had no candy surprise. Half were iced with Cheesecake icing and the other half with chocolate. All had nerd sprinkles and pink and green crystal sprinkles. They were a hit at the party. The chocolate in the candy melted down well and made the cupcakes very moist leaving a peanut butter chunk. I think that is a good solution to making extra chocolatey cupcakes...add chocolate cansy. I think hersey kisses would be the perfect size. I have no pictures of the final cupcakes. They looked prety uniform after the icing and sprinkles were on. Just thought ya'll could benifit from my cupcake experiment.

Here are some pictures of the supervisor doing her job. )

I have 2 more posts about the other crafty things I've been up to. These will be in my personal journal and the craftgrrl journal. I'm just that crafty of a mad genius.

This is for all of you ladies that wanted to see what my daughter's butterfly room looked like. I still have to suspend butterflies from her ceiling coming from the window. First is the Read more... ) I bought small feather butterfles from a dollar store. They came 2-3 in a pack depending on size. They have a long piece of thin wire on the backs of them. I threaded this through the slats in the closet door and bent the wire back and forth to make a weighted hook for the butterfly to stay in place. The butterflies are very light so I did not need to add any extra weight for support. That project was very easy.

Next is the curtians ). I bought purple cotton fabric and sheer purple butterfly ribbon to make them. Everyone does it different. They are basic tab top curtians. They have an four inch doubled over hem at the top and bottom and a two inch doubled over hem at the sides. The width of the tabs is 4 inches. I forget the length. I made the tabs in a tube fashion and then ironed them flat so the seam was on the back. When folded over to make the tabs the seam on the inside. Before attaching the tabs to the curtian I cut pieces of the butterfly ribbon the same length as the tabs and top stiched them into place. The curtian rod is a bronze finsh with leaf finials the hold backs are matching with the rod with larger leafs. The small table and chairs that you see in front are from target. They are white with a rich plum uphostery. Very french garden which is the point of her room.

Next are the simple decorations. The crib ) is from JCPenny's. The posts unscrew as well as the finials. My mom bought this crib for us as well as the butterfly finials and the butterfly dresser knobs. There are also heart ones for both the crib and dresser. They match the butterfly and heart bedding that my mom purchased also. The crib is convertable into a day bed when she gets a bit older. I do plan on making her a can can bed skirt fully fluffed with sparkle tulle in lots of shades. The dresser ) is mine from when I was a child. It has a short removeable railing trim at top for a changing table. The curves in the railing match wonderful to the curves of the bed, table, chairs and tox box. The dresser still has some of the brass knob on it. I have yet to change over all of the knobs to the heart butterfly set. Above the dresser I hung these metal butterflies )

Here is my last crafty post for now. I still have a few things left down stairs that are unphotographed so... I might post those later.

This is a really simple gathered skirt. This skirt is reversible I chose a mesh camo print, a green knit, and a camo print ribbon for this one. All of these supplies were puchased from walmart. Overall cost about $10. That was for my materials but, yours could cost more or less depending on fabric and ribbon choice. I cut 2 panels about 26 inches long and as wide as the fabric is out of both fabrics. I then sewed the camo pieces together and finished the seams. I then did the same with the green. I sewed the 2 pieces together at the top with right sides together. I then turned them right sides out and top stitched them by the jointing seam I then stitched about 1 inch down from that stiching to form a casing for the ribbon. I slit a small hole in the casing by the side seam for the ribbon to go through. I threaded the ribbon through leaving extra for tying a bow. I figured out that length by slipping on the skirt and tieing the ribbon uncut to what I would need to keep the skirt on and have a bow. I left the hem unfinished to make it more flowy. The nice thing about this skirt is that it fits a wide range of people and you can always add panels depending on your size and desired fullness. I tend to wear mine with all the gathers in the back to make a bustle look. A camo bustle... that's just how wacky I am.

Ok so I've been working on making purses made out of hard cover books for an upcoming craft show. BUT. I'm getting stuck on how to make the inside lining. I've tried 2 different ways so far - both ways involved hot-gluing the fabric in place, but they both look really sloppy.

Does anyone have instructions/tutorials on how to make the inside lining for book purses? (either by sewing them first and then hot-gluing them in, or hot-gluing it all...)
I've looked online, but can't find tutorials for it. Help!

EDIT - ok. if no one knows how to help me, then can someone give me the name of that crafty website that everyone else goes to? I can't remember the name of it. I remember seeing something awhile back about book purses though.
Sigh.

These are pictures of Alex in her halloween costume. I made the costume myself. I altered a Disney Princess pattern to my needs. It turned out very well and she might wear it again around the holiday's. I also plan on making her a couple for our Christmas holiday trip as well as a jumper suit (tunic and pants) for thanksgiving.

Okay, I didn't see this in the memories- but if its there just point me in the direction.

I finally got my sewing machine out the other night and threaded it and what not. I resized one shirt, then when I went to do another one, the thread started breaking. so last night I sat down and did some trouble shooting, and I did everything the book said. I changed the needle, rethreaded the bobbin, messed with the tension, I even changed thread b/c most of my thread is really old and I thought that might be a factor, but it's still breaking.

what is going on?
[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/infekt_/
alright. so here goes.

i need to reupholster some pieces of furniture. namely an armchair, and a couch. however, i've only done lighter pieces before (such as dining chairs), and really have no idea as to how to go about redoing an armchair much less couch. i've tried looking online at tutorials, books, even videos, but they're pretty confusing nonetheless. so, my question is if there's anyone out there that can create a sort of "reupholstering for dummies" tutorial. that would at least help me get started with normal person speech, as opposed to expert professional reupholstering technician speech. Thanks!

Hey all. I haven't posted in a really long time, so I thought I'd share a few things. Lots o' pics. :D

earrings, purses, and skirts, oh my! )

I have a couple of questions. To those of you who sell earrings, how do you package them for shipping and how much does it typically cost to ship them? (or does that just totally depend on where you're sending them and what not?) Thanks in advance!
