so the other day my roommate and I were drinking some nice cold beverages, when she decided that her's was a bit too cold and started to complain about her hand freezing. so being a good friend AND a quick thinker I grabbed a scarf that I had just started to crochet, whipped out a circle piece in a few minutes, rolled the "scarf" piece into a tube, sewed the two together, added a button and ta-da! insto adjustable drink cozy!

Hi everyone, I'm a big fan of this community and I've been lurking for quite awhile. So finally, I have a little contribution to make. Yay!

My mom gave me this tin she got with her wallet awhile back. It had a really ugly picture of a truck on the front of it. But since I have a thing for containers, I kept it. So a few days ago I decided that I needed a kickass container to put a present in and thought of it. I wanted to personalize the container and make it fun, thus I got out my stash of acrylic paints and went at it. It turned out pretty good for a random bit of inspiration/experimentation, but I'll definately be more prepared the next time I make something like it...

Without further ado... )

Hi, does anyone know of a place to buy already made silk screens? Like with an image on them already that you can use to print with.

What I've been working on tonight:

I think I'm going to leave the hoop on as a frame. I like the idea of it being like framed art. :)
[identity profile] mastodonna.livejournal.com
i made this tonight.

it's made from some levtover fabrics from the paramecium-project plus some marbled fimo-beads (i made me new plugs, too, which have a pink/green spiral and i used far too much fimo. so i mashed the rest together, cut it and made a circle, a triangle and a quadrangle). the combination of colours is quite horrible but also neat (i'm too tired to decide, i think. :D) i'll use it to store my pens in it.

I never post in here, so please forgive the long entry.

I have spent the better part of the last two days making a bag for a friend.

This was the inspiration:

Image heavy (?). )

Woo for spring break crafting.

Wow. I've been too lazy to post haha.

3 new outfits!

You know this is going to be heavy. )

x-posted like mad.

I made this a couple weeks ago, but since mother nature seems hell-bent on dumping snow on my head from now til eternity, I haven't felt like using it.

Question, ladies. Oh, and yes I'm new. =D

I really want a bag like the one MK has in NYM. Pictures here )

I want to get one for myself, or have someone I know make me one or SOMETHING. But I don't know how to describe it. It seems like a messenger bag, I know that. But what else should I say? Vintage, scraggly looking? I mean what kind of fabric? I don't know how to describe it. Also if anyone knows where I could find a bag like it...PLEASE let me know.

Thanks in advance.

P.s. I read the memories, yes but I'm just really confused and I hope that this post is okay!

my friend wanted a knitted ipod sock. she only wanted a blue one, and didn't want to shell out the $30 for the official ones. so she had me make one. :)

caron sayelle "dark federal blue" : $1.00 (clearance!)
size 6 double pointed needles : 4.29
michael's 40% off coupon : - 1.72
tax: 0.29
total cost = $3.86

(i had a little bit of a lighter blue leftover)

this was my first project on dpn's, and it took me a little while to get the hang of it, but once i did, it was pretty easy. this project too me maybe two hours or so, on and off, since i was also watching tv & talking on aim. lol. it fits her ipod perfectly, so she's happy. :)

and to avoid having to type this out later, i thought i'd share:

materials
size 6 (4mm) double pointed knitting needles (mine are 7")
worsted weight yarn in an MC (main color) and LC (lighter color)
i think it's 10-ply worsted weight yarn that i used. regular cheap acrylic stuff.

gauge
finished ipod sock will measure a little over 2" by 5"

pattern
with MC, cast on 24. leave a long beginning tail to stitch up the bottom later.
spread stitches evenly onto three dpn (8 stitches per needle).

work in k2, p2 rib pattern for 4.5"
switch to LC and continue working in k2, p2 rib pattern until sock is about 5".
bind off.

using long beginning tail, stitch the bottom closed. weave in the rest of the ends, yada yada, tada! :)

I was simply desparate to have something that wasn't pastel. It was easy to work up and I think I finished it in about two weeks of commuting time. When she grows out of it, I'm going to make a black one with pink trim for her.

What is interfacing and how/when should you use it??

I made some new necklaces that I'm pretty proud of! They're soldered plate-pieces on sterling chain/findings.

I was wondering if anyone knew of a really good quality screen printing ink. I've had problems with SpeedBall nontoxic Textile Screen Printing Ink - it's weak and doesn't show up on darkly colored shirts -- for example, yellow ink turns green on a blue shirt. No fun. Thanks for your help!

Hi gang!

I just joined this community and am totally inspired by all of you! My name is Lisa and I live in Los Angeles - the SFV to be exact. I'm married and have a house full of uppity animals - Bogart, the English Bulldog, Lulu, the Chihuahua and (much to my hubby's chagrin) three kitties, Nimbus, Harley and Pita.

I love to knit, make jewelry and make box purses - out of cigar boxes and from plain unfinished boxes. Once I learn all the ins and outs of posting and uploading pics I'll post some of my goodies. You all ROCK and I look forward to hanging with ya'll.

Knit on!

hello, this is my first tote bag... pretty simple, nothing spectacular, but i still think it's kinda cute =]

rainbow tote

features a pen pocket that holds 4 pens:
pen pocket

*[not shown] also features a small pocket perfect for holding keys, a wallet, or a cell phone.
*the reverse side features the same rainbow print, but... reversed. does that makes sense?

thanks for looking!

okay. i want to start knitting and have looked at a bunch of tutorials already.
my only problem is that i'm not sure which style to use.
continental? english?
which style is more common? more versatile?
also, i'm left-handed... will that make a difference?

i'm afraid of starting myself off with bad habits.

Purses

Hi everyone,

Here are a couple of my favorite purses I've made in the last few years. My goodies )

[identity profile] howcanueatthat.livejournal.com
Ok, so i have the modge-podge/glue and screen fake screen printing tutorial, but I have a question. Do you think that if I made a screen, then cut my stencil out on sticky contact paper and stuck it to the screen, that it would work? I don't know if that makes any sense. Like... take a frame and staple down screen/tulle/whatever i decide to use for the screen part. Then take sticky contact paper and cut my stencil out. Stick that to the frame and screen so that the part of the screen without the contact paper over it is where i paint. What do you guys think? Should I do the contact paper on both sides?

It's made of like a swimsuit material (which I love) and it only took me a little under two hours to make. I love the color, I got it as scrap fabric at Jo-ann's. Sorry if the picture is too dark, my room doesn't have much light in it.

Anyone who has made a Maya Wrap, for step #4 (Surge or zigzag through all thicknesses of the folded fabric. Note:
if you use a serger for this step, be sure that your serger can handle
all of the thicknesses.), where am I exactly supposed to make his zip zag? It doesn't say and it doesn't show.

i was greatly surprised to get a phone call from great-aunt - not a catch up "how are you" sort of call but a "your mom says you do things with duct tape. i want a bag!" this is mostly surprising because she is my very posh very 78-year-old great aunt.

i really hope she likes it. somehow the idea of my little old aunt traipsing around with a duct tape handbag just gives me the giggles.

I have a question (it seems like that's all I have lately :ox) A good friend of mine is not doing so well. I'd like to make something to help cheer them up. My sister (the really crafty one) and I are going to make a stuffed turtle for them and also a beer bottle cap belt. So my question is about the belt--we have the belt and we're getting the caps in soon, so how would you go about attaching them? Thanks so much!!

So, I've been studying how to make kanzashi for the past couple of months. I have been using these videos as well as a kanzashi book. Both are in Japanese, so I have to go by the visuals which has left me figuring things out from trial and error. I have hit a few snags with a few things.

1. Getting perfect squares (1 inch by 1 inch) cut out of the silk has been troublesome. Currently I am using scrap silk that I have rescued from thrift store finds. I cut up the garments, iron out the fabric and then go about cutting out the squares with an exacto knife and a ruler. The exacto knife sometimes creates a jagged edge and the fabric sometimes shifts while I am cutting no matter how hard I try to not budge it. The squares that I obtain are usable but not as neat and perfect as the squares made by the kanzashi makers in the video. My question to all of you out there is how do I go about cutting perfect squares out of the silk? Is there a better method to do this than what I am already using? Is there anything I could use such as any quilting tools to make cutting out these squares less troublesome?

2. The rice starch adhesive that I am using doesn't hold my petals onto my bases. The guys in the video seem to be having the easiest time assembling the petals on the bases. The only thing I can think that I am doing wrong is with mixing or setting the adhesive. I am mixing it exactly the way the directions say to mix it. I can't figure out what I am doing wrong with this. Does anyone have any suggestions?

In advance I want to thank you for your responses and for reading all of this. I greatly appreciate any help that I can get. I will end this post with a few pictures of my tiger lily kanzashi (Note: I had a bugger of a time making this. I ended up sewing the pieces together and gluing them to a base with a glue gun. Also, I used cotton fabric instead of silk.)
