Selling clothing for a living has one huge advantage ~ you can get away with a rather casual style yourself, or may even get encouraged to wear the fancier (aka colorful) contents of your closet more often.
Selling clothing for a German company, hoewever, has one huge disadvantage ~ most stores have no AC, and the one where I am working at atm heats up to some toasty 40 - 50 °C during the summer months.
Solution: sew as many summer gipsy skirts as you can possibly get out of the light-weight fabrics you own. I made two so far, taking me about the time of one soccer match each. We'd moved my Necchi into the living room during the soccer world championship ;)...
( Here are the results )
In order to somehow complete the documentation, here are a few pics of the summer coat I had been working on in the last few weeks. It's absolutely not perfect yet...there still is a fake belt sort of thing missing in the back, and the shoulders aren't quite making me happy either...but considering how absolutely horrible the fit of the original pattern was and how much I grew to hate Aenne Burda while working on the coat, it's become wearable enough by now, after countless alterations on my part. I'm just glad that I used nothing but the cheapest cotton I had laying about, so there wasn't much money wasted on it. Still, no garment to exactly be proud of. N-E-ways...( coat pics )

baby quilt
Jul. 11th, 2006 01:00 pmHere are some pictures of my first ever quilt. It's a baby blanket made with a woven ribbons block (8" out of 2" squares, 5x6 with a 2" border). I didn't technically quilt it, but it's anchored by those embroidered stars. When I started we didn't know the sex of the baby, but now we do, but even so, she's sure to be happy with a bright quilt with a Star Wars Empire Strikes Back backing. :D

Jul. 11th, 2006 03:17 pmHi, I'm new to the community. (:
I checked the memories section on clay, but I didn't find what I was looking for, I'm sorry if this has already been discussed.
I was wondering if anyone knew of any sort of base that could be added to 'natural'(?) clay to make it more managable. I went rafting yesterday and brought back clay that I found on my trip. It's very wet, and when it starts to dry it just sticks all over everything. I'd like to be able to make figurines and such out of it.
Also, if anyone knows of any active 'clay communities', please post!
Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

Harley Quinn Costume
Jul. 11th, 2006 06:40 pmSo, I know there were some of you interested in Harley Quinn costumes..... well, they have them on Ebay now. They don't look bad, but they don't look right either... if that makes sense. I guess Harley fans have voiced the interest in having a HQ costume.
Anywho. I just wanted to keep you guys updated on my progress of my homemade HQ costume. My hubby and I decided to go as the Grusome Twosome of Joker and HQ this year. So, I wanted to make my own to make it as real as possible.
Today, I went and ordered 2 full body, long sleeved, turtleneck unitards. One in black and one in red. It cost me $70, but with the left over fabric, I can make the diamonds, the shoes, and the hood.
I do have a question though... what fabric would be best to make her ruffled wrist bands and the white collar? I was thinking felt. I also have to find LARGE white puff balls, unless I can figure out how to make them. Also... what would work best for the mask? I can't have any strings... I have to adhere it to my face.
So, my suits should be here in 3 weeks, and then it's time to go go go and make this happen!
I will keep you posted!

Sewing machine help!
Jul. 11th, 2006 08:12 pmI got a used Singer 247 sewing machine a few weeks ago and took it to the shop to get all fixed up. They charged me 60 dollars and it worked great for a couple weeks. Tonight it just stopped working, and the wheels underneath would no longer turn with the hand knob or while the machine was running. After several hours of inspecting, I finally traced it up to this gear on the inside - it is supposed to turn with the hand knob gear in order to run the wheels on the bottom of the machine. But upon opening up the machine, I found that everything was really grimy/dirty in there and the gear in question had completely eroded away... all of its teeth have just withered away so that it can no longer connect with the adjacent gear, and the wheels on the bottom of the machine cannot turn.
So I am really angry that the shop didn't recognize this when they supposedly did a complete renovation of the thing... and will probably want to charge me even more money to fix this now. I am just wondering - is it feasible to try and find a replacement and install it on my own, or should I go back to the shop and demand an inexpensive fix? It just seems like they didn't even LOOK on the inside of the machine because it was so dirty and corroded - when the receipt they gave me said that they completely cleaned and tuned it up. Any advice on this, and would it be possible for me to replace the part myself?
Here's a picture to show you where the part is - it's hard to see the erosion of the teeth, but it's there. The gear seems buried under so many other parts that I'd probably have to dismantle the whole thing to get to it.

In search of one inch button maker
Jul. 11th, 2006 09:16 pmHello,
Just a quick question. Does anyone have a good recommendation on what type (and/or where to find) a good one inch button maker/machine? I've found some online, but have nothing to go on as far as references to quality. I'd love and heartily appreciate any advice.
Thanks, in advance,
Heather

Keep It Safe & Legal
Jul. 11th, 2006 09:25 pmI made this plush uterus and fetus "purse", and just finished it today.
Just as a warning, some may find this offensive. I, however, find anti-choice offensive. We'll just keep it at that, ok?
Keep in mind it is not something to actually be used as a purse, it was just more of a project/statement. I entitled it "Keep It Safe & Legal".

shrinkydinks
Jul. 11th, 2006 10:51 pmI have a couple questions. I've checked the memories here and the FAQ at the shrinkydinks website, but I didn't find the answers I needed. I thought perhaps you could help.
1. I want my shrinkydink to be a charm for a necklace. When I punch the hole in before baking, can I also go ahead and insert the metal ring? Or will the plastic stick to it somehow and make it not hang properly?
2. I bake with sculpey, and I have a glass baking dish specifically for my sculptures and nothing else. When you use a cookie sheet for shrinkydinks, do you have to devote it entirely to shrinkydinks and never to food again? If so, is my glass baking dish ok instead of a cookie sheet?
Thank you in advance. ^_^

Coconut Oil?
Jul. 11th, 2006 11:19 pmI'm going to make soap. I have the general gist of what I'm going to do/use and all that fun stuff. However, the "recipe" that I'm going to use (and most of them that I've seen) call for coconut oil.
Almost everything that I need I can easily buy at the grocery store, but I don't think I've ever seen coconut oil at the grocery store. Is it there? Where can I find it?
Another question that's been on my mind (for those of you who might happen to make soap):
I'm planning on making lye-based soap. I'm not so worried about the lye as I'm sure that I can take the proper safety precautions and what-not, but I was wondering if for mixing and cooking (as far as measuring glasses, pots, mixing bowls) if it's safe to use bowls and pots that I'll be using again for food? Obviously, I don't want to poison myself or anything.
Thanks!
