Somewhere in between studying for end-of-school-forever exams and panicking about final assessments, I thought it would be a good idea to make a bag for my future endeavours out in the Big Bad World. Cue lots of hours spent procrastinating in fabric stores... I think this rates as my number one 'displacement activity' as our final year co-ordinator terms it. But anyway...

It's a veritable menagerie! )

I made the start of the halloween costumes for my dogs tonight. The colors for our household for the SCA are Green and Gold. So we got some yellow and some green flease and I sewed rectangles together to make like a horse barding. I am going to make my Chihuahua little Knight Horses for Halloween LOL This should be interesting. I'll try to remember to take pics and post them when I am done.

The school I teach at holds a pumpkin carving contest every Halloween. The last couple of years the Show Production & Touring dept. has won. But not this year! This year, Digital Arts & Design is going to take it! Er, I hope :). My coworker, Amy and I, are representing our department with this Nautilus pumpkin! It's a plastic pumpkin bought from Michael's. We figured why work for a month on something that'll rot in less than a week, y'know?

My daughter is 19months old and going out as a ragdoll tonight

so i took one of her knit bonets/hats and weaved yarn through it
here is the result...

Hi crafty folks! I just wanted to post a picture of how the halloween costume I made for my daughter turned out. She's going as a dancing badger from Weebl's dancing badger animation that was circulating around the internet a while ago.

I used a Simplicity pattern for a toddler skunk costume and modified it so that the paws were fold-over mitts (in case it was cold on Halloween, and also so I'd have somewhere to put little claws, which were made from a shiny black raincoat material). I followed the head pattern exactly and it came out really badly, but I was able to kluge it for fit and then appliqued more fur over it to make the stripes. Fleece fur is VERY forgiving and hides a lot of bad sewing (I sew like Jack Sparrow on crack). I wish I had a back picture (I'll have to take one tonight), because the tail turned out pretty well (and it makes me laugh).

Hi, I've checked the memories and couldn't find anything on this.

I want to art journal but am having trouble with the gesso. It just seems to be making the pages just soggy and heavy and very bendy. This is after being left to dry overnight. can anyone give me any hints. Am i putting it on to thickly? Is there a way to get it thinner?

Thanks in advance for any help.

I made this yesterday. It's the first piece of jewelry I've made in months. It took me pretty much all day, but I'm happy with how it turned out. The pictures aren't that great but it's hard to photograph something that's on your wrist and I didn't feel like dragging out my lightbox.

A friend of mine is going to be a (dead?)bride for Halloween. So I made her these:

origami white roses )
Luckily, there won't be any rain tonight, so the roses won't be damaged outside.

I used some white computer paper, green origami paper, wire and lots of superglue. I recently bought some origami paper for these roses at a store called "Morning Glory" in Princeton, NJ. And lucky me! The paper came with Korean directions to make them a lot faster than I used to be able to. These used to take me a half hour each to make. Now I can make about 4 in that time. Definitely sweet.

I also made this for a friend who will be moving to Florida within the next week:

EDIT: links to instructions have been added in the comments, but to be efficient, here it is:

There was also a link to make roses out of crepe paper, or tissue paper:

They take time and practice to make correctly if you are not experienced with origami, so good luck! Post your results too, I'd love to see. ^_-

Ok so the Darth Vader one was eloquently carved by my husband, who claims to not be crafty even though he picked out some nice bead sets at a bead shop over the weekend and he actually wants me to make him a necklace.

He found the Vader online, of course, but it was literally an already-carved, lit-up pumpkin. You had to pay to get the pattern! So he proceeded to get some graph paper out and spend the next couple of hours drawing the pattern himself, freehand.

Then he transferred the pattern to the pumpkin using the little puncturing tool in the pumpkin carving kit.

He was up until about 4am on Monday morning finishing it up.

I'm very proud of him! I think he did a great job. I know it's not quite perfect, but it's pretty freakin good, isn't it?!

Happy Halloween everybody!

My BFF and I decided to go as Black Metal Nuns for halloween, and all the nun costumes at the stores sucked ass and were expensive, so we made our own.

Everyone always talks about yarn-porn...so this is my "puppy-pile" of sexy yarns.

Yarn made with bicycle innertubes, reflective bits, organza, tulle, irridecent silk, and fun fur, and love. Yes, lots of love.

Details and explicit photos of each here: sezzy, sezzy yarns

Xposted to a few places because I'm a leo. :-P

A while back some one posted a costume they had made for their dog; I think it was a banana. So I figured I’d make my doggie one too…but a Hotdog instead (old I know, but I crack myself up every time I see her wearing it). I’m a broke college student, so I just used 20 cent felt, left over velcro from a diff. project and my sewing machine, and tada, TiTi the hotdog.

Gift Ideas;
Halloween will soon pass, many of you will experience a moment of crafting calm and then...blam..the realization that (for many crafters) THE HOLIDAYS ARE COMING will slam into your crafting world.

Much like Halloween, calm and rational holiday crafting requires forethought. You don't want to be the craft zombie shuffling glassy-eyed through JoAnne's, grabbing random items last minute, assuring yourself that your boyfriend would love a cloth-covered plastic denture case.

We're reminding you now that craftgrrl is not the right place for asking "What should I get my....?" questions. We can't keep up with the demand for brainstorms, but the crafty_gifts  community is the place to post those questions.

Are you the sort of person who is all planned up, and has ideas to spare? Well, get over to  crafty_gifts and HELP! The more people who can give crafty ideas, the better the brainstorming will be, the better the brainstorming, the fewer craft-zombies.

Searching!
And, we'd like to think that craftgrrl will inspire you through the holidays, but we're not looking forward to the rush of "there was the one post, back when...do you remember it?"  posts.  We understand where they come from, but there is an easier way.

LJ Seek it!

LjSeek is an amazing free service that will search through all the posts, looking for keywords. You access it by going to the craftgrrl info page and, on that top icon bar with the "add friends" icon, click on the magnifying glass. it works miracles I tell you!

We hope this reduces your crafting anxiety this year.
