Hi all. I've just recently started teaching myself how to knit. My boyfriend asked me to knit him a hat for a valentine's day present. Problem is that with his dreads his head circumference is 28" (hence why he wants me to knit him one. He can never find any that fit!) I've tried googling for a hat pattern, problem is that most of them are about 22" and I don't know enough about knitting to make any changes to the pattern. Does anyone have a pattern that might be suitable, or tips on making a pattern bigger without adding too much length?

any help would be super

Hi!
I have searched the memories and google for this but I cannot seem to find what I am looking for.

I am trying to start a small business where the three R (Re-use, recycle, reduce) will be the stars.  As I plan to make natural beauty products (among other things), I do need some packaging.  I thought that re-using all the glass jar I use in a year would be a great idea.  Unfortunately, most of the jars smell very strongly like their previous inhabitants (jams, pâtés...).

Do you have any idea how to remove the scent from the jars?  I have washed and washed them and the smell doesn't seem to fade.

Thanks a lot!

And so this is not text-only, here are some scarf I stenciled for my male friends last Christmas.

hey everyone,

My great-aunt in Slovakia popped me an email the other day and said she wanted to be crafty with those plastic tube-containers that prescription medicines come in, but didn't have any good ideas. I had a few ideas, but nothing spectacular.

Does anyone have a project that rocks some socks?

Thank you!

I made this altered book from an old children's board book.
This little book is based around the theme of 'beauty' and includes vintage images of ladies, old pieces of lace and trimmings, beads, buttons, ribbons, etc... I have tried to use old, pre-loved, recycled bits and pieces to tie in with the vintage beauty theme.  I knew that those old broken beaded necklaces and lace trimmings that were in my sewing box, would come in handy! :)

Does anyone know what ever happened to the notebook that was to be sent from person to person, each crafter illustrating a word of their choosing and then sending the notebook along to the next person on the list?
If that plan has become defunct, is there anyone interested in starting it up again with me?

This is a little pink amigurumi kitty that I made for my friend Jill's birthday. She stands at about 3.5" tall. There was a lot of trial and error with this project, and it looks quite different that what I originally had in mind, but i like her. Hopefully Jill will, too =)

I'm making a color wheel.
You know, red, red orange, orange, orange yellow, yellow.. etc.
I can use any kind of material, photographs, cookies, fabric, paint, anything.
I have a few ideas of my own (i really like mobiles), but I'm wondering if you any of you lovely ladies (and a few guys) would help me brainstorm.
Any suggestions are very much appreciated.

My coworkers and I constantly watch Strangers With Candy and joke with it's disgusting humor. Yep, even I got into it. So when we found out yesterday afternoon that Amy Sedaris was having a craft challenge, I just had to enter! The challange was to put google eyes on a piece of food, take a photo, and submit it. Entries are due at noon today. Many people glued eyes to a zucchini and snapped off a couple of shots. I, of course, had to make all the food from scratch, photograph it from all angles, and then tweak the pics so they looked like gross 1970's Weight Watchers recipe cards. My boyfriend helped me come up with the name for the pigs in blankets. I thought it was the funniest thing in the world at midnight last night. Heh. hmmmm. When I entered there were less than 200 photos submitted. Now there are over 300 so I'm afraid mine will be lost in the shuffle, but I tried and I think they came out nicely. All my food is vegetarian. You can click for a larger version and there are a couple more photos in there that didn't fit into the card's square format.

Now if I only didn't have to go to work... Still it'd be pretty Awesome if Amy showed up at work with a cake for us :)

Etsy?

I really love Etsy-- so much amazing stuff on there! What I'm wondering, though, is whether it's actually a profitable way for an individual to sell their own work, or if it's simply the *easiest* way. I have a site for my main business, but I was thinking of trying to sell paintings and painted utilitarian objects on there, but thought I'd inquire about it before I went to the expense/trouble of listing them.

So, out of curiousity, those of you who've sold stuff on Etsy for a while, have you managed to sell a fair amount? What type of craft(s) were you selling?

Thanks, and hope this is not too off-topic!

This is a sock creature I made for a nephew for Christmas. They are really fun to make. I learned how to make them from the book Stupid Sock Creatures.

i've been a knitter for many many years, but i have this pattern that is confusing me just a bit. i've got two questions and if anyone can answer any of them i'd be really appreciative :)

1. what does it mean, exactly when a pattern says "turn"? the part of this pattern i don't understand reads like this: (61 sts. are cast on)-

row 9: k29, (yo, k1)2x in the next 3 sts. (turn, p12, turn k12)3x, turn, (p2tog)6x, turn, (k2tog)3x, then k across the rest of the row on the remaining stitches.

if it helps, this is a little knitted vagina and that row (row 9) is the row that is supposed to make the clitoris... :) i've had patterns that have said "turn" before and i don't think i've ever fully figured it out- maybe i did it without even knowing!

AND-

2. what does "b" mean? it says:

row 10: p29, (p1-b)3x, p29

thanks in advance!

Question!

Believe me, I have looked through the memories as well as google, and I guess I'm the only idiot who can't figure this out. I got a new singer machine yesterday and I'm just practicing the straight stitch.  I know this is tedious, but I promise I have a point in all these pictures. >____<

::EDIT::
Thank you guys so much!!!
As for the vagueness in my post, especially in the first half, I just wanted to make sure I was doing everything correctly.
And after I cut those two strings final strings after stitching, I just start all over again in setting up the bobbin thread, and its course and all?

So, I have taken a liking to making cards and scrapbooks. I was given a bunch of eyelets and brads by my mom but I have no idea what type of tool to use to put holes in my paper crafts. What type of tool(s) would you reccomend that I would be able to find at Michaels.

Thanks all.

Every once in a while I like to do something different to keep myself from getting bored or tired of doing the same things.

These are paper dolls that I did for Spring. The first one is 12 inches tall and has metallic blues and pinks with a crow and a vine and tree design THe second one is only 6.5 inches tall with the same design (less metallics on it than the large one). I am thinking of doing more of these dolls and maybe making some for xmas next year as gifts.

I just found out that a good friend of mine has lost the grey and black striped scarf I bought him - AND the replacement one his girlfriend bought him too! So, of course my fingers are itching to knit him a new one.

I usually knit chunky, quick scarves, but I feel like taking my time with this one. I'm going to use some nice thin cotton yarn and 4mm needles. I have a couple of questions:

a) I want to knit it in stockinette*. Is there any way I can knit it so it doesn't look crap on the back? I want it to be reversible essentially. I've heard that you can do 'double knitting' to make both sides look good, but I'm hoping to not have to do anything *too* complicated! Is double-knitting hard? I'm still at that 'I only knit scarves because I can't do anything else' stage.

b) When I change colour, is there any way, again, that you can make it so you don't see that sloppy 'out of place' line of colour on the back, where the change takes place? (I hope you know what I mean). Would 'double knitting' fix this?

Thanks guys, I really appreciate your help! :o)

*Is this a bad idea, as stockinette tends to curl at the edges? I don't want to spend ages on a curly scarf :o/

The higher ups in corporate at Hancock Fabrics have decided that they are closing 40 stores this quarter. I don't know about your local store, i'd go check to see if it is one of the affected ones.
I DO know about the Arizona stores though: All but the Mesa location (Gilbert/University), the 2 in Tucson, and the one in Flagstaff will be closing at the end of April. If your store is affected and you're mad enough about it, please call or write corporate to let them know that Hancock's is still very much wanted in the Phoenix metro area and around the country.

A5, A6, mini (A7), and teeny (even smaller than that).

I've been making the bigger sizes for a while, but I was curious to see if it was possible to shrink them further. Hence teeny notebooks, they're about 6.5cm (2.5 inches) x 8.3cm (3.3 inches), with a depth of about 1.4cm (0.5 inches). However, I think this may be the limit as to how small I can make notebooks. =)

Hello all, maybe someone can help? I'm new to knitting, I'm teaching myself off the SnB book. I'm making a striped scarf. I have added the new yarn color, but why am I getting the line of where the other colored yarn starts on the opposite side? Here is a picture so it can actually make sense hah.

I folded the scarf so you can see both sides.

hey all! i need some valetine's help!

okay, so for valentine's day i want to make my best friend a little goodie bag. i'm going to make a little mini tote bag and stuff it with all kinds of goodies. first off the usual: candy, maybe candles, pamper-yourself-type stuff. also, since she's single, i wanted to make a little book with the the top 10 (maybe 20) reasons why it's good/okay not to have a valentine/boyfriend. anyone have some good, perferably funny, reasons i can use? also, i want to make a "girls night out" type of coupon. we both like to go out and party, but we don't too often together cause of our busy schedules. the thing is i don't want to present it in standard cupon form. like, i don't want to just decorate a piece of paper, write girls night out on it, and have that be it. i'm having trouble thinking of a better, more fun way to do it though. any ideas?

thanks for any input, and sorry for the text only!
