My sister is learning to knit. Very much a beginner.

She wants to knit something for her five year old son, who chooses to grow his hair long but gets irritated with folks who get confused about his gender.

She wants to make him something that won't exacerbate the confusion. This isn't a debate of gender expression. She is WILLING to let him wear whatever he wants, including marabou and glitter, but what he wants is to be seen as a boy. A boy with long hair.

That said, what can she knit? She sees patterns for stuff like tank tops, but folks told her they're too girly. I don't agree, but then my children will suffer through all sorts of gender confusion. Oh well. (I don't have any yet. don't call ACS.)

I suggested those sporty wristbands, although I couldn't tell her what people wear them FOR.

I suggested a necktie cause who doesn't love a five year old in a tie!

Other than a thong, I can't think of anything else that will scream, BOY. I suggested letting me embroider I AM A BOY. A BOY WITH A PENIS on the item when she's done. Whatever.

I'm really not sure what inspired me to do this. I was spending my Saturday night cleaning and starting to pack stuff since I move out of my apartment the first week of May. Maybe it was the plethora of yarn I have stashed in my closet; most of it not having been touched all year.

I picked up some yarn and sat down to crocheting. I knew exactly what I wanted to crochet although I didn't really remember how to get the shape I wanted so I pretty much winged it.

Next thing I knew, I was adding a button and...

had myself a vibrator cozy. )

Something tells me I won't be sending finished product photos of this project to my grandmothers. Heck, maybe I will anyways. :)

Shadow Box

I really haven't posted in here forever. I had to pretty much give up handsewing because of my tendonitis so I have been a useless work drone these days. But yesterday I made a shadowbox dedicated to out older rat Mayonnaise who died a few weeks ago. We were pretty torn up about it but I think making this helps.

He was such a wonderful creature, and taught me so much about myself. :)

New to the site, so forgive me if I'm doing this WRONG - did a lot of searching (web, this site, links FROM this site) and I can't seem to find a pattern for these!

http://www.cordcoverup.com/

Maybe it's too simple!  I know I can just make a long tube, gather it, and put elastic on the ends.  I just want to look at some better ideas, because I'm not getting how it might attach to the lamp so it doesn't slide down all the time!  I don't wanna use the obvious options (velcro stickies, hot glue, etc.) cuz that'll mess up the lamp itself...

Help!

I have been making jewelry again and pick up odd plastic toys that I think would make cool charms...However I am not sure on how to drill/punch a small hole so I can insert a jump ring. Would an awl and a nail do the trick or would that crack thin plastic?

Thanks for any and all help!

I have started getting into making zip pouches. They are fun and fast to make.
Here they are )

I bought some cool clay beads that look like round American flags. I wanna make a bracelet and maybe some earrings with them for my mom for Mother's Day, but I'd like to do more than just string them on with some other beads. I don't know if I'm looking to do something where there are other beads sewn around the clay beads or just a cool idea for a flat, round accent bead, but I've been through my bead books and I'm out of ideas. Anyone have any good ones or know any good sources?

Thanks in advance!

Or at least maybe a different way to make heal flaps/ turn heals? Probably not, but can any of you knitters tell me if I really did it right, or if I just made something up, of if I've done something horribly wrong and they'll implode upon wearing?

Here's what I did for the heal flap:
On DPNs, put half of my sts (24) on one needle (like my instructions said)
then, sl 1 st at the begining of every row, k and p until I had about 8 st on my needle.
Then, inc1 at the beginning of every row until you have 24 sts again. Apply stitch holders, and use the kitchener stitch to sew the sides of your mysterious shape together. Getting a turned heal.

Ugh. It was confusing, and the way I came up with was super easy and fun, and seemed quite obvious, but my stitch and bitch isn't until wednesday and I need to know, did I do something wrong/ invent something/ do it right but are dumb and cannot read knitting language?

All that aside, knitting socks is the greatest thing ever, I believe.

im trying to get back into using these lovely communities im a member of.
so heres another thing that i am working on
not a complete project, but its pretty much as much as i can totally get done now.
and wont be able to finish until june.
(that will make sense once you see the picture.

sob story
i graduated in 2006
leaving my best friend, erika, to finish her last year of high school
we made plans for her to go to sac state and live at home for a year
and then once that year was up, we'd look into an apartment together.
this all was ideal, until she toured san diego state...
and it basically stole her from me.
leaving me no local best friend once she graduates
and her no me in san diego.
she wouldn't have me, until i schemed up this brilliant quilt.
of the years we've have together
and pictures galore
i started the work on a top secret graduation present for her.
which is here )

First, a question. I'm looking to make some ear wraps, but I'm unsure of what kind of wire to use and where I could go about finding it. Any help? Thanks =)

Second, this is a photo of a lamp that I made a few months ago. It's Link from The Legend of Zelda. I personally think this is adorable, but I'm really biased. It's made of a flower pot, a plastic light fixture globe, covered in felt, and then was painted. It's an actual working lamp, but it's really just more for decoration ;)

So... How the heck do I do this sort of egg dyeing?
I know it's obviously something intricate, but I want to learn.

I absolutely forgot about doing any eggs this year, so 3 days ago, I poked holes in, blew out, washed and set out to dry a dozen eggs so I could dye them.

Anyone have a clue how to do it?

Any other suggestions for how to dye eggs in a way that's good looking enough to actually want to keep them? Usually we just hard boil them and all, but I want these ones to be keepsakes.

Or something like that.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

So I made a post a few days ago about painting and such and I worked all weekend and finished it. I was able to find a little three pack of small canvases, so it's only about...I'm estimating 8x12 inches. Keep in mind that I've never painted before and I know nothing about higlighting, shading, shadows, etc. I think I'll stick with photography.

I wanted to do this because I've been dealing with a bad case of scoliosis for 5 years now. My back hurts all the time and I'm so embarassed when I look in the mirror and see my collar bones crooked and one side of my neck higher than the other. I was hoping this would be sort of theraputic, like turning my twisted messed up spine into something sort of pretty.

The pelvis though is actually full scale, I traced it form an Xray I had taken of my full back, head to tailbone.

THANKYOU everyone who offered up comments on my last post! <333

Badges!?

So, you know how the scene kids all have little one inch pins that say clever things or have cute pictures on them? Perhaps you have some yourself. Anyway, I decided I wanted some pins, or badges as I've been calling them.

That's a stoplight badge, with a shiny button for the red light, and embroidery for the amber and green lights. It's inspired from Ned's stoplight patch in The Life Aquatic. Beside it is a Canadian penny, Queen side out (I rather like the Queen, she reminds me of my grandma.) It has a wee bit of rainbow ribbon to make it fancy. All made with safety pins and glue guns and so on. Hooray!

Do any of you guys know where I can get a deal on about 10+ yds of black cotton fabric? I'm going to look at Wal Mart (don't hate) and Ebay, but perhaps you guys know something I don't. :]

Or perhaps one of you have that much laying around, and want to sell it to me. Haha
