Ok, so I have someone that is requesting that I make my normal "beanie/kufi" caps with elastic on the bottom, but Im not quite sure how I would go about this...
The last row of stitches I use is a hdc, should I just get some black elastic (do they even make that?) and crochet it with the hdc? Or do I weave it in somehow.
Im completely lost.

Just a suggestion for you all...for everyone who likes decorating tins, GO TO FLEA MARKETS! I must have seen five hundred tins in all different shapes and sizes today, all for like mere pennies.

Also good since christmas is coming up and you can use them to hold cookies and all that jazz.

i just had the most brilliant idea: and i need to know what paint would adhere best to aluminum? i may use spray paint, if this is not a good idea let me know. here's some the general idea as to what i plan on doing because i have always liked fish, but not cleaning tanks:

painted aluminum sheet (small) + homemade fish magnets = message board for fishy thoughts

Last weekend some lowlife smashed our back passengers side window, to steal our (and our friends) fold up chairs while we were waiting on line for Yankees tickets in the Bronx. We were told the window was going to cost $200-$230 to replace and install. We didn't have that much to spend so instead my husband came up with the genius idea of using Plexiglass instead, and it only cost us $30!

Here are the pictures )

Any creative ideas?

I looked through all the entriesin the faqs on dying fabric and didn't find my answer. So here's hoping one of you can help me. I have black and white striped tights that I need to dye light brown so that they'll be brown and black striped. The brown die should do anything to the parts that are already black, right? The lday at the hobbie store scared me and said to not even try dying them. She said that you can't dye nylon fabric like that, it simply won't work and that I should trying painting them instead :( Well this wasn't what I wanted to hear at all. The bottle of fabric dye I bought (liquid RIT) only says that when dyeing nylon fabrics you just need to pick a slightly darker colored dye. Has anyone tried dying fabric like this before? Any suggestions, advice, anything? I really don't want to have to try to paint them. Thanks

just an idea...
people get awfully weird in here about posts being repeated and the same questions yada yada.
and, as wonderful as our moderator is, the memories section only works if you know just what it was that you wanted to make or were looking for. my suggestion: i have seen on some peoples' userinfo pages "search this site" little jobbies. if we got one of those, we could look up any entries with the WORD 'embroidery' or 'nativity' or 'nylon' etc in them.
does anyone have one of these on her userinfo and journal? can you tell us how they work and if they are free?

UPDATE: okay i am rock dumb. we have one. duh. BUT, it only does the last 50 entires, and with the prolific posting of these crafty ladies....that doesn't do much. does anyone have any info on one that does the whole journal?

Is anyone familiar with a publication called JOMARC? I think it would be craft-related. If you have a pointer to a web site, you would rock. www.jomarc.com is not it. :)

No more tighty whiteys!

I hate white undies, but the packs I like to buy always have a white pair, which gives me an excuse to dye. ^_^ These were done with purple RIT, by the stovetop method. The material is 100% cotton and I let them simmer oh, probably 30 minutes. Now I have happy undies!

(sorry this was crossposted like crazy)

I live in San Jose, CA. I would love to get a group of people from the area together to dress up as fairies and whatnot and go around doing nice fairy type things. Passing out treats, giving hugs to strangers, sprinkling glitter on those who are glitter friendly and whatever else you guys could think of. What's better than playing dress-up and doing nice things for people? So if anyone in northern/central California (or anyone who is up for a road trip to get here) is interested please let me know. If you like the idea but don't have a costume/wings I'd be more than happy to help you make one or make one for you. The date/time/location would be discussed by those who are interested once everyone has had a chance to read this. Any suggestions would also be appreciated.

I realize that this is barely crafting related (making the costumes and wings but that's it) and if it's inapropriate that I posted this here just let me know and I'll delete it.

okay.

so i wanted to make a sock monkey for my 3-d art class, and i have the instructions and everything.. but. where do i get a "red heeled sock"? i don't really want to get one online, but it seems like everywhere online they sell "monkey socks." so my question is, is it easy to get red heeled socks or "monkey socks" at like.. a regular store that sells socks, or a craft store like michaels? thanks. :D

Did anyone catch that commercial a while ago with Halle Berry and Britney Spears? It was because they were both going to be guest stars on SNL (the one where they almost kiss). If not, here's a link. I tried to do a screenshot of it but it just doesn't work (apparently not only can you not print-screen DVDs but also MPEG files).

Anyway... I love Britney's scarf that she wore. Maybe not in those colors exactly.. but I'm guess it's knitted. Or loosely crocheted with a big hook. It's hard to see in this video file, but it had this fuzzy look to it and I was wondering what kind of yarn would be close to that consistency? I was thinking perhaps Fun Fur? But I'm not really sure...

I saw some scarves at Macy's on the display racks with the coats today too, that were made of this same material (but in wintery colors like khaki, brown, and white).

Random note to self: I should learn to knit. I saw knitted scarves at Express today as well -- half of the scarves were one color (like black) and the other another color (like white) and they were selling for like $20 or $30, when of course you could make the same thing for much less..

So, in case you missed the last entry I made in here about my sewing machine exploding (and you prolly did, because really, who cares, you know?)... it did. So in order to finish a few odds and ends that I need to get done by the end of the week, I totally went out to Walmart and bought 3 packs of super-weight hem tape.

I also got a cute cherry iron-on jewel transfer to jazz up the demin bag I keep my stitching in because, you know, I could.

So tonight it's fire up the iron and get ready to rock and roll!!!

So I have been playing a lot with fabric crafts and am a little confused about all of the different types of fusible webbing. How does it work, exactly, and how do I know what kind to buy?

Mostly, I want to be able to do two things: applique, and stiffen stuff (like for the bottom of a purse?).

For the applique, can I really just cut out a shape of fabric, fuse it to the webbing, then fuse that to something else? Does it not fray?

Thanks for any help.

I was wondering about cutting a kneelength (or longer, for that matter) plaid wool skirt with pleats so that it looks more like a mini. If anyone's been to the mall lately, you might have seen these plaid pleated wool skirts.

So my question is, can I just cut it, pin the pleats, and sew up the hem? Would that work?

I would like to make some stuffed animals to give as gifts. I want to make a stuffed cat, especially. I know there are free patterns online, but I can't find any of stuffed cats or even any stuffed animals. I tried www.freepatterns.com and some others that were in the memories section.

Does anyone have any other places I should check?

I'm starting my xmas gift making already.

I'm sorry if this has been posted before, but after looking through the memories section, I didn't find any ideas. I was wondering what are some neat things to do with wrapping paper other than wrapping a present? I saw this wrapping paper today with a beautiful print and I would love to get it and use it in some nifty way. I would appreciate any ideas!! :)

So, I'm reading a vintage nudie cutie magazine that I'm listing on ebay and in addition to the fine fiction and pictorials there are record reviews. In this issue, Barbra Streisand's Color Me Barbra is reviewed. However, the author says the music sucks and that you should

My boyfriend and I are currently on opposite coasts, thanks to college, and he's been undergoing the biggest barrage of papers and exams I've ever heard of, so I thought it'd be nice for me to make him something that would make him smile, be useful, and be shippable at small cost.

Any suggestions?

So I dyed my tights. Everyone was telling me it would come out lighter than the bottle said but they actualy came out significantly darker. But they're good enough. I made them on the stove and let them simmer for the longest recomended time (a whole freakin hour)...
