Hey everyone :) I've been watching and reading this community for a while, but this is my first post. I know you guys have heard a lot about gifts since it's the holiday season (or a little after. . . hehe), but I just finished one of my boyfriend's gifts and I really wanted to show it off. ;)

It's a stuffed penguin... I didn't really know what I was doing, I just kind of cut cloth and sewed it together and hoped it worked out :) Final product is 36 inches tall (not including feet) by about 50 inches round at the biggest part.

Here's a picture to show how big it is, sorry for the bad quality of the webcam:

More pictures. . . )

Home and Garden Television has a HUGE craft section on their site!

I haven't picked through it yet, but there's tons under each category (on the left bar)!

Hi... I'm delirious. It's one-thirty am, which is pretty late for me to be up when I've got work tomorrow, but I was BOUND AND DETERMINED to finish this bag tonight and now I'm so proud that I wanted to show it to you guys!

It didn't turn out exactly like I wanted, but we'll call it a practice. It can only get better, right? Anyway, I think it's cute!

it's all hype... )

I looked at all the FAQ's and I couldn't find exactly what I was looking for.

I made a simple skirt (started out a straight-skirt, turned into a panel-skirt, still sorta straight, heh). And I want to put a layer of hot pink netting underneath that shows out. It seems like it should be simple... but knowing me I'll find some way to screw it up.

Should I make a full underskirt or just a panel at the bottom?

Also, the skirt itself is already made, except for the elastic waist, so how should I attach the underskirt?

These are the questions that keep me up at night...

Some background info on my newest little project. If you can name an allergy, I probably have it, and if I don't already, I'll probably develop it. Which is why I wasn't surprised when my neck began itching whenever I wore metal necklaces, now I can't wear any metal on jewelry, not even the clasp. I'm not a big jewelry wearer, but a few christmases ago my grandma gave me one of those pearl necklaces where you open the oyster yourself and pop the pearl in the little heart shaped cage. Tonight I was looking at some hemp jewelry how-to's and figured I'd try it out with some floss I have from eons ago when I made friendship bracelets.

2 pics back here )

Oh, and these little guys are the coolest things in the world, I'm going to have to make some if I ever save up long enough to buy my sewing machine.

Mosaic Minds is a new web-zine that launched it's first issue today! It's not a 'craft-zine', but it does feature a craft project each month. Check it out! :)

Can you dye lace with fabric dye?
I would like to use lace in crazy colours (hot pink, lime green, violet, etc.) for details on the clothes I make, but can't find any coloured lace in the stores - only white, cream, and black. Have any of you managed to successfully dye lace? I feel as if it won't work because lace isn't very absorbent (I'm talking about the frilly kind, not the cotton kind). Any advice, suggestions?

Foam Bags

After returning from a trip to the craft store with several sheets of foam, I decided to try my hand at making a bag out of them. I used a blanket stitch with embroidery thread around the edges and glued on a design with tacky glue.

Comments and suggests would be greatly appreciated.

OK Ladies & Gentlemen...we have set the first official Tampa Craft Night for Wednesday, January 28th at 8pm.

I was originally going to host it at my salon in Ybor, but we decided that wasnt a good idea because of night time parking, and i have stairs that go up to my shop, and one of our craft girls is on crutches...SO, the women of Ophelia's Folly/State of Delerium have graciously offered to host the craft night at their store. They have a wonderful outside seating area where we can all spread out and craft. AND, they will be serving homemade baked goods, as well as coffee :) Anyone w/ a portable craft is welcome. We decided not to do a theme night because its much more interesting to see all the different types of stuff people make, as opposed to everyone making the same types of things :)

So, anyone who is interested, please either leave me a msg in this post, or email me @ tiffany@soapiffany.com

Hope to see a lot of people there!

xoxo,
Tiffany

I have some shrinkable plastic sheets (not shrinkydink brand but same idea) and I have both the normal ones and the inkjet printer ones. Unfortunately they are loose and I've muddled them up. How can I tell which is which without actually experimenting and wasting/ruining them?

Okay, here's what I want to do:
I want to take an already-working clock (preferrably cheap!), take the front (glass) part off, add a different background on the cardboard/metal part where the numbers are, and then put the whole thing back together and have it work. How can I do this- does the front part snap off, or come off at all? If so, do most clocks do this?
I checked the FAQ's, but the clock entries all seemed to be about making other things into clocks (like purses and such)
Weee! Thank you so much, and thank you all for being a continual source of crafty inspiration to me!!

I know this has been debated before, but are cherry pits really the best thing to make those heating bags out of? I checked The Cherry Pit Store (www.cherrypitstore.com), and of course they make cherry pits sound like the greatest things on earth, but also, I don't think I'm going to need four pounds of cherry pits to make one little bag. I'm worried about using rice and then having it scorch and smell funky forever; anyone have any experience using pits and rice? Is there REALLY that big of a difference in the end?

anyone have any tips on salt dough crafts?

I found a sewing machine in my garage! It was left here by the people that used to live downstairs. I just took it out of the case and it seems to have some issues. It seemed to be working at first, just slowly. Then it started to smell like... like when you use an electric mixer... Does that sound like a burned out motor? I'm hoping it's not because it would be so cool to have a new sewing machine.

Since we have reached 4029 members I felt we needed another moderator to keep everything straight. So [livejournal.com profile] cordelia_sue will be the communities newest moderator.

That gives us me, [livejournal.com profile] prophetspyder, and [livejournal.com profile] cordelia_sue. [livejournal.com profile] kimmercake is on sabbatical as she is graduating from college, so if there are any problems please contact me, or the other two mods.

As a gentle reminder please no selling on the community, plugging your ebay auctions, etc.

The faq seems to be up and running, and there is 1678 entries in it.

I will be modifying the community info to reflect the new moderators as well.

I also wanted to remind everyone that the google searchbox seems to be working now for looking up things here on the community.

Thank you all for making this a fantastic community, and sharing your crafty know how.

***EDIT***
We will be allowing trading on the community, as long as it doesn't take things over. Think of it as a probationary period to see if it gets out of hand or not. My only fear is that it will increase our already heavy posting. If you have any ideas, comments, or are for or against please let me know in this post so I can gauge how you all feel about that.

tonight i just plain on staying home and relaxing. i would like to do something crafty though, but i have no idea what. i have paint, glue, masking tape, markers, crayons, various kinds of papers, magazines, and a jar (which i'll decorate if i can't think of nothing else to do.) any ideas on a cool project i can do? the only thing i can think of is making collages. how could i make that more interesting? thanks in advance for any ideas : )

Trading.

[identity profile] ethicalcannibal.livejournal.com
I foolishly did no research on the subject and decided to allow trades, when it was brought to my attention that this might become just as much a problem as selling. I was under the impression that it would not be large increase in posts, and would be on topic, but I am not a part of any communities that allow trades. (This might be a clue, but I don't know.)

Please give me some input on whether or not you want to allow trading in our community. I have set up a poll to help. I need to know if you guys think it would be disruptive to our community in any way, or become a problem.

I recently beaded a little bag to use for holding my ID and cash when attending concerts and clubs. I got the idea from a picture I saw in bead and button magazine a few months ago. I used 2-drop peyote stitch for the bag, and some thin vinyl I found in wal-mart's fabric department for the window.
