I've seen alot of people knitting with Fun Fur or eyelash yarns. I just started knitting, so I apologize if this is a silly question, but if you were to use that to make say a scarf (or something that would be substantial) do you have to knit with a sort of base yarn first or do you just use the eyelash yarn alone?

Howdy, fellow craftgrrls and boys! I just finished making a handbag from scratch-- started last night and now it's done! It's definitely the most complicated bag I've made. I used about a billion different old calico fabrics from Mom's collection. I made up the box shape and duplicated it for the lining, then added a bunch of pockets. I got my rather artistically talented boyfriend to draw me a simple sketch of a fox, which I then made a template from and did the whole appliqué process. I won't bore you with that, but it's complicated and a little hard. I used some cute little black shank buttons for the eyes and nose. :) Overall, I made pretty much what I wanted, but it's wayyyy floppier than I intended, even though I interfaced and lined it. Oh well. I made it too wide, I think...

FOXXXYY!!! )

Also, I bunged this appliqué on a t-shirt a long time ago, but now I have a digicam, so here's a pic.

I'm torn about the fact that it's so frustration to read the same "how do you stencil" posts again and again from new people, but at the same time, I was new once too, and didn't know about the faq.

I wonder whether it would be worth it for some posters to stick a tag line at the end of their posts that says something like "you new? read the faq for tons of answers" or something - SOME people are just lazy, but when I was new to this community i didn't know about the faq either.

would this be a good idea?

if so...

"you new? read the faq for tons of answers before you ask!"

Trading.

It seems the majority on the poll are against trading. Some that are opposed are very opposed. It also seems that rules would have to put in place to keep things running smoothly. I don't think anything should be changed unless it's an overwhelming majority that wishes it. I had not realized that trades were so similar to in post volume to sell posts.

So craftgrrl will remain the same, and be a 'no trading' community. I am sorry for those that wanted to include trading, and maybe we could post some larger, well run, alternative communities in the user info for trading. We have some selling communities up there, but I am unsure whether they are trade communities as well.

Thank you so much for telling me how you feel, and discussing it. I am sorry I jumped the gun a bit, but very happy you all came to my rescue with some very good insights, and well written dialog.

So once again, we will remain no selling/buying/trading.

So I just finished scouring the FAQ section with no luck. I just killed another hanging plant from my house, and would like to make something out of the excess Christmas lights I've accumulated to hang in that corner. I would also like to make another one to hang in my bedroom from my other dead plant's old spot. I want it to look cool, but nice...I thought about stuffing them into something and hanging it, or poking them through something, and hanging it, but I'm having trouble putting my thoughts together coherently. Any suggestions would ROCK! Take care.
p.s. If anyone knows where this is located in the FAQ, that info would be most helpful.

Made from directions in the book, "Sewing Tiny Toys" by Carolyn Vosburg Hall. Its pretty easy and fully jointed. Its my first stuffed animal and I can't believe I could understand the directions! :-) That's a nickel for size perspective.

My first ever. The inside lining is too long. I should have measured better. And I didn't double the sides.

Now I want to go to the hardware store and get something to attach straps to the book itself. I fear that if I attach them to the sides, that will be too much pull, although the purse can't hold much. I was going to drill and use screws, but I didn't have any screws short enough. I want to try a grommetty ind of thing. Any suggestions?

so last night I made my first ever hat.
No pattern or anything, I just cast 1 strand Homespun and 2 strands of Funny eyelash on size us 15s and made it up as I went along.
What resulted was something that looks to me like a cross between a Hershey's kiss and an elf hat. I don't know what I'm going to do with it because I don't even wear hats...but it's growing on me.
I just spent half an hour trying to capture it on my webcam and this is the best I could do:
actually the head scan looks better )

I've spending alot of my time the past couple weeks making bags. It all started out when I decided to sew a turtle for my boyfriend. I had fabric left over and decided to make a bag! I had never made any bags before, let alone sewed much. I had so much fun making the first bag that I decided to keep making bags!

The first 4 bags I made were late xmas presents for my friends and the last one I made for me.

Without further ado! My bags in chronological order:

Bag #1-

i was bored the other day, and decided to paint on some plain undies i never wear.

i just used regular craft acrylic paints. i've washed them all at least once since i painted them, and the paint seems to be holding up well. the white pair is an image that i ironed on. they're cuter now, but i still don't wear them!

Hi there, I recently was given my mom's old sewing machine. It is REALLY nice... I think. Of course, I don't know yet, because I can't figure out how to work it. I've asked 4 different avid seamstress' and they stare at it as if it were the weirdest thing for a number of reasons. I'm pretty much useless when it comes to asking questions about how to get it to work right, because I don't even know the terminology, so... taking baby steps.

Does anyone know where I could get a book on how to use a particular make of a sewing machine? Are there any books you'd reckomend?
[identity profile] ardoise-vide.livejournal.com
i can't sew, nor do i have the time to learn.

is there anything easy i can do with a tee shirt that i LOVE LOVE LOVE but will likely never actually wear? what can i do with that image?

I'm attempting to sell my jewelry on Ebay with no luck as of yet. I would really like to get this going because I a) have so many pieces I made for this purpose and b) would be nice to have some money.

So my question is, how many of you have had success with selling jewelry (crafts or anything for that matter) on Ebay? What is it that works and what is it that doesn't? Besides Ebay, what other methods are out there that work with selling?

Does anyone know of a glue that works well with Vellum? everything i've tried makes the vellum look weird. I think brads would work, but what about glue?

And, has anyone used the glue called "Yes!" if so, does it work good? no lumps or anything?

thanks.

Greetings.

Hi all! I'm new to this community... I'm looking forward to learning how to do more crafts because I have way too much time on my hands, heh.

Okay, I'm going to ask a question, if that's alright: Has anyone customized their own bookcovers? I'm talking about the stretchy 'book socks' for textbooks... Since I don't like the patterned ones, I got a few solid color ones and I want to put something on the front to make it 'my own'. I have a few ideas (I've been stenciling on pieces of fabric and I thought that I'd just sew it onto the book covers... I can remove them by taking away the thread), but I want to see if there's anything better before I start anything. By the way, does ink bleed on those things?

Thanks!

Helpful advice for anyone who has problems with their iron ons cracking!!!!

So some of the photos I ironed on to my pants started to crack uncontrollably so I grabbed a bottle of that fabric glue designed for sequins and jewels I think it was Aleene's

Well anyway, I took a paintbrush and painted over the cracking areas and so far so good. I wore them today without any new cracks and the already cracked pieces are remaining stuck to the fabric...

WOO HOO!!
