I just remembered I've got quite a few bathtiles lying around (white/cream). They're dirty, but otherwise in good shape and have never been used (got them for next to nothing at a yard sale, they were left over from re-doing their bathroom). They're square tiles and aprox. 4"*4". What I was thinking was to paint them and put felt under them to make coasters out of them. I think it was on some DYI/decorating show on BBC-America a long time ago. However.... I can't remember what type of paint they used so it doesn't just come off again every time you put something on it, and I've no clue what to use as a sealant to prevent the image from getting damaged with use.
Do any of you have a clue??? I'd love to do this (even think I could get hubby to join in on that one!) at some point this year, so any suggestions would be appreciated.
Many thanks!

A friend found a coffee table that someone was throwing out, and picked it up for me. The top was in poor condition, and some of the trim was falling off, put it had potential!

I decided to mosaic it with some leftover tile. I had a friend draw a lizard on it for me, and used that as a pattern. Here is a picture of the base of the table as it is now. The problem I'm having is figuring out what to use to trim the table with. I need something that lips up a bit, so that I can take the grout to the end.

Ideas?

So this isn't all that crafty
and I made it in about ten minutes with some white paint and stencils
but I love it and it makes my hoodie not so boring

and if anyone knows who the Toxic Avenger is I think I'm going to screen print or stencil his face above the text

Here's the predicament:

I am making an elizabethan corset out of dupionni silk that's quilted with gold thread for the boning chanels. For some added interest I was thinking of spray painting gold over a doily and getting the silhoette of it on the corset (photo behind cut). I tested the idea out and I like the effect however the paint colour does not match the gold binding very well and I am afraid of making the corset look cheap and shotty. So I need some ideas and suggestions on whether I should:

a) bone it, bind it, grommet it, and call it a day.

b) mix up some acrylic and fabric medium til I find that one perfect colour to stamp onto the fabric using the doily (may not work).

c) or some other amazing surface decoration you can think of.

I appreciate any ideas or imput from the masses.

thanks!

Ok, so I've got it in my head that I want to make a Patchwork skirt. This is all fine and dandy, and I'm cutting out my squares. Suddenly I realize, I don't know how to make it so that it looks right (much fuller on the bottom than the top).

I guess I could go ahead and sew all of my squares together, and then cut out a skirt pattern from the sheet made of squares, but I keep thinking that there's a better way to do it.

Anybody have any ideas?

New to the LJ thing- but SO excited that I found this community- I've been DIY crazy the past couple weeks- finally figured out how to use my sewing machine- now I'm just trying to figure out how to sew!! So far so good a halter top- which I'll post. At least it'll give you pro-sewers a good laugh!! = ) I just re-did my bathtub...has anyone tried to do that before? It sucks...but it looks SO much better. You have to strip the old paint off with this highly highly toxic goo- then scrape that stuff till your arms feel like their gonna fall off- then mix this paint/glue for tiles & tubs that has to sit for an hour and paint that on- but the result was amazing...I guess I'll have to post those pics too! I was wondering though I wanted to change my grungy floor tile in my bathroom and lay astroturf over it. You can buy it in carpet stores for like $1.50 a sq ft so its cheap - but wasn't sure if it would work any suggestions? Thanks!

well i've been a lurker for about 2 weeks, and this is my first creation. and first time i've ever made anything with the sewing machine i got for christmas. i'm very proud, but would like both positive and negative views about it.

it a bag which i made out of a pair of grey trousers that the buttons fell off. but i dont know if the grey fabric is too worn???

the lining fabric isn't from anything. just some fabric scrap i found.

i'm proud of it so dont be too harsh!

so i checked the FAQ and found sites that had little pots for lipgloss, but does anyone know a good place to get the little tubes? they sell them at the craftstore but i want to find somewhere cheaper because i need like 15+. any suggestions?

hey, so i wasa little late with the christmas gifts this year, but i did manage to finally finish my friend jimm'ys gir hat. let me tell you, character hats are NOT such a great first project when learning how to use a sewing machine

i think i got the hang of it, and fleece is so soft! more hats!

Nothing terribly new, but if you missed it the first time around, I followed [livejournal.com profile] xsaltyx's instructions and made a fleece boa! I love it, love it, love it!

I'm especially proud of it because, even though it's super easy, I've never made a fabric craft before. I don't have a sewing machine, so I hand stitched it, and it still only took me a few hours and it worked beautifully. I still can't believe I made it.

It's black, so it doesn't photograph very well, but here's a picture of how happy I am wearing it.

I also wrote a thank you note to all of you for helping me to unearth my inner craftiness. )

i'm moving in with stinkycretinboy by the end of february and i've been looking for hints on damage free decorating for a rented home. i ran into this website, which is an okay site, i guess, but it turned me onto THIS website, which totally rocks! what cool ideas they have! i totally want to do this project for our new stinkycretin home.

i know this sort of question has been asked before, and i did check the faq - but i didnt really find my answer.

i decided to try to start selling my crafts - things like jewelry and picture frames. maybe eventually ill expand, but thats where im at right now. i know a lot of you do this... im just wondering, how do i get traffic to my site/auctions? are there places on lj that really work for promotion? which is better for starting out? my own site or an ebay store/auction? im really lost on where to start. any help/advice/experiences would be so appreciated! thanks!

I have a skirt, a jean skirt, and it's just a BIT too small. I want to maybe add panels to it, but I dont want it to look like it's too small and I need it to be bigger. I want it to look like its supposed to be like that. Any ideas would be good.
[identity profile] xduhx.livejournal.com
first off i would express my appreciation for this awesome community- it has provided endless inspiration for many projects but unfortunately i have very limited access to a digital camera...

now onto the questions:

i recently acquired some flooring ceramic tiles- and i have been experimenting with modgepodge/decoupaging stuff- and i want to make coasters... and some potholders to put hot plates/hot pots onto instead of the counters or tables....
i read in the memories that polyeurathane could make modge podge surfaces waterproof... is this a spray or a liquid and where do i get this? and will it make it safe against high heat?

i also have old metal pieces of a stovetop (the part you place the pots/pans onto that conduct heat) and ive heard you can paint them and use them seperately as potholders also but is there a particular paint you have to use to ensure no damage to the paint?

in short... i just want to make my modgepodged tiles either waterproof or highheat proof.... any suggestions?!

My wardrobe needed something new, something different, something quick and cheap!

okay so.

tomorrow i am spending most of the day on the bus or standing around waiting for a bus.

what can i knit that is simple enough to travel? i can cast on and off, knit and purl, and maybe even increase/decrease, but nothing *too* special. i have circulars too, they are about 40cm. in length.

and clearly, i can make a scarf, but maybe you have some interesting ideas?

Warning:
there is some nudity in the form of nipple magnets and vintage pin-ups/cartoons, so I'm giving you the link. I'd hate to get anyone in trouble at work!

Thanks to all of you folks for the fabulous ideas, and I hope you enjoy the pics.

EDIT: FYI, the flat button-looking things are actually magnets. I made them with my button maker. The brown stuff in the jars (in the record bowls) is homemade peanut butter, in the red plastic wrap is a selection of tasty cookies and buck-eyes.

I just bought basil and thyme fragrance oils for candle making. I was wondering if anyone has ever tried incorporating fresh or dried herbs in their candles? I was thinking about placing fresh herbs in the molds before I pour the wax in or mixing in bits of dried herbs while I'm melting.
