I was wanting to make a costume for Halloween. I have it narrowed down to three choices with Jessica Rabbit being the one I like the most. I have a good idea of how to cut and piece the fabric like I need it but am running into one problem. I am busty and will need support in the dress.

Without adding straps and wearing a bra, how could I add support to the bust of the dress? For those of you who don't know what the dress looks like, there is a picture below the cut.

I'm pretty inexperienced with making my own costumes so I figured if I started in the next few months, I would have plenty of time to get it finished.

Also, does anyone know of a place where I could get that fabric (a red sparkly type) without waiting for the Halloween stuff to come out?

Yet another little thing... Gotta hate it when the biggest inspiration strikes on the exam week, when you should be doing anything but crafting all day long ;)

And don't tell me to buy a manual, search the FAQ, etc... I have a manual, but it is packed away somewhere, still at my moms house. I am not spending 30$ for a new one. The FAQ didn't reveal any ancient mystical answers to me, nor did the special google search.

I have a Brother XL-5232 model sewing machine. Up until now, I have never had to wind my own bobbins, I had a slew of them. I know how to get it ready to wind, but to hell if I can't figure out how to get it to do it on it's own. The Brother site has a sufficiently generic enough description to thoroughly confuse me. It says to use the start/stop button. There is no such button/switch. Only the on/off one.

Maybe I am missing something. Does anyone have this machine that could give me a clue? I just wanted to do some light hemming/mending today :/

I bought some plain white canvas shoes and got some fabric paint and acrylic paint and decorated them, and then sprayed them with some sealer. And dyed the shoe laces with acrylic paint and water. I want to write something on the scrolls on the side, but I'm not sure what to put there. I was thinking song lyrics or something. Any ideas?

its super hero spirit day at my school next week, so when i saw this TMNT (as they're only known to truly dedicated fans) sheet at the thrift store i decided to make a skirt to wear. well, i came up with this: Read more... )
not exactly as i planned... well then i decided to make a new skirt... apparently when i measured my waist i forgot to allow leeway for seams... i was all out of fabric, so i decided i might as well try to slip it on as a tube top: Read more... )
i think i'll wear it with jeans and a cute little black cardigan. I'm going to put purple felt "D"s on the butt pockets for donatello, my favorite turtle!

ok, so in speech and debate, i've started a new event. in it, we need to make visuals. that's not the problem for me, the problem is carrying them. i saw a giant pink bag in the memories section, but I don't think a bag would really work. I kinda want it to fold over the visuals (they're posters) so they're protected, but to have handles. i'm not making sense anymore, am i? in short, big, posters, handles, cute if truly possible... lol! so ideas? fabric types, handle ideas? anything?

Hey everyone. ::smiles and waves:: I'm new here. I actually need some help... my friend and I who are fifteen have a whole basement to do whatever we'd like with it. It's pretty large and we need some ideas and crafts to fix it up & make it nice. Got any interesting ideas for us? Thanks!

I looked, I did. Did someone have something bad to say about them fairly recently? Or was that a specifically used/discounted machines site?

I ask b/c the actual store is near by, and I can't seem to find any other places to look for a new bobbin-holder-thingie (I know, I am so technical) You know, that piece that you actually put the bobbin on. Sewingmachines.com is a Brother (among other brands) dealer, so I am hoping I can maybe just buy that piece, and not for a huge sum of money.

me babbling about semi-related stuff )

Scary, but had I just hand sewn what I needed to, I'd have been done hours ago instead of still worrying about this. *sigh*

And so this isn't totally without crafty goodness, I bought some beeswax crayon blocks for my kids, and the colour is amazing. I have never, ever seen colour like that come out of a regular crayola or whatever brand crayon. Ever. I use brown paper for them to draw on so they don't see white walls and associate them with colouring, and the colours just jumped off the page.

I also got some coloured beeswax modeling wax for them, and they had fun with dad making sea creatures. Much fun was had. No piccys, sorry, but just passing the info along. They were not cheap, but well worth it IMO, and the crayon blocks should last as very long time (as opposed to crayons which I am forever melting down to make new ones).

as a joke, i made a stuffed dinosaur for my boy and a pink one for myself- they turned out better than expected. i made the pattern up as i went along, and they're about the size of a regular pillow, perfect for snuggling with- especially if you live in the bay area and your loved one lives in washington.

also, my boy is getting in touch with his crafty side...babysteps, babysteps...he made me "mars flowers" its one of our jokes- i wanted to know what flowers on mars would look like, so he made me some. he said that he bought a "bouquet" of tootsie-pops and cut the wrapper so that it resembled leaves and attached a sweet note. he was mighty pleased with his craftiness, "i can make stuff too, you know." uhhuh.

you know those flower clips that are ever-so-popular but sold at ridiculously jacked up prices? i decided to make one of my own, so i bought a fake flower at ben franklin, but i wanted to make a black one and they didn't sell black flowers, so i bought a white one...my question is, i don't have any fabric dye but i have fabric paint, can i mix fabric paint with water and dip the flower in it to dye it black? if so, how much water to paint?

does anyone know how to successfully convert a futon frame into a couch?

im thinking of taking boards and covering them with some sort of super thick foam and thencovering those and the frame with fabric. i think its going to be really hard, but hey, poor people have to be creative.

does anyone have any suggestions or has done this before and know how to go about such a task?

thanksss!

I've read the FAQ/Memories posts about decorating the interior of a car, but I have an unanswered question:

What glue would be safe, no doubt about it to use on a dash board? I don't want to ruin my dash or have it flake off if i decide to remove something, especially since I don't plan on keeping the car forever.

I have a Saturn, if that helps any, to give you an idea of what the material is like. It feels like rubber, but I really don't want to risk it.

I was thinking Hot Glue because its pretty flexible and removes easily. I don't know. Any experiences?

Thanks bunches.

Hey...
I want to make my best friend either a hat or a bag...crocheted...and I can't seem to find a pattern for a skull and crossbones.
I can't even begin to imagine how to do that. Does anyone know of a pattern that I could follow to do that?
I imagine I could make 2 bone shaped pieces, crisscross them and then lay the skull on top...herm.
Has anyone ever attempted this before?
I did a search and couldn't find anything....
Any help would be appreciated.

anyone know how to (have a link to) tie a perfect bow? you know, so that the ends hang downward and the bow part is straight across?

thanks in advance! :)

I was wondering if anyone had any idea how to make this. I LOVE the style of it, but hate the colour.

After a horrible shirt painting disaster [read: almost ruined shirt and yellow spots on blue carpet], I was desperate to create something that turned out decently. So I set to work on a free-gift-with-make-up-purchase bag.

The bag reads "girls just want to have fun!" in some fancy free-hand script. So that is all. Just a passing crafty phase. I have some soaps I need to show off soon. And other things.

So that is all. P.S. I would greatly enjoy some new friends. :]

Has anyone ever seen silver vinyl in stores? Lately I have been dreaming up things in silver and gold vinyl, but I haven't found any in stores or online.

Has anyone in Vancouver Canada seen any before? Or online? I'm desperate!

Taught my 3rd class Saturday, it was a very large group. There are more and more people each time I go. That ok though, more people means more money, more money means a fatter vacation fund!

woo

It's a birthday card. The candle is tied on through 2 eyelets and secured with a dab of glue and a white midori ribbon :)

Thanks.

I checked the FAQ, please tell me if I missed the link, but here's my question:

I have the same light blue Jansport backpack as 50 other people on my campus. I'd love to jazz it up with fabric paint (don't want to sew buttons on, since that would pierce the waterproof material). Anyone know how well fabric paint (what kind?) stays on to waterproofed material? Or if some sort of sealant is required? And how durable?

Thanks!

Two strands of Red Heart yarn and a Q hook together makes one emergency 1st birthday blanket for my boyfriend's neice, Kaitlyn.

Four more pictures inside (including ones of the little one)...

C'mon, you know you want to look at how cute she is... )
