I just borrowed a sewing machine and I didn't get instructions with it. It's so different from the machines I'm used to.. and I haven't used a machine in a long time, I mean I'm usually good at figuring stuff out but this is really weird. It's a Kenmore 15 stitch, pretty old.. I don't even know if the person who owns it has instructions (I'm going to hopefully find out tomorrow) but I need to figure this out ASAP so can anyone give me hints?

umm, i need some help...with altering clothes. dresses, to be precise.

i have 3 dresses that i want to alter...
the first one is slightly too big on the bust and across the back, it does up with a zip in the back
the second one is too big for me in the bust and waist and is just a pull-on style
and the last one is too big for me in the bust and waist and it does up with a zip at the side

i keep trying them on to decide how to alter them, but just get annoyed, coz i don't know what to do :\

can anyone help at all? either comment here or email me...or add me to msn? popplepantz @ hotmail.com. oh, and i can get photos of the dresses tomorrow, if anyone can help me...

I found the head of a sleigh bed frame beside a set of dumpsters along the waterfront in Seattle and it's now in my garage. My mattresses are on the floor so I thought it would be nice to have the frame at the head of my bed so the pillows would stop falling off the bed at night... The item is in very good condition. It's wood, there aren't scratches - it's just dirty. The real issue is that somebody decided to spray black paint on the visible side (the original wood would have matched my wood floor much better) and it looks tacky. I hate sanding with a passion because I don't like inhaling dust, I hate the sound, I hate the feeling of that kind of friction and mostly, because I'm weird. Is there anything I can do to the frame without sanding to alter the appearance? In case you need to visualize my room, it has deep purple walls, a pearlescent gold ceiling with East Indian decor. It's elegant and romantic. Gimme ideas. No shabby chic, please.

ive been seeing ribbon type belts all over lately and i really like them. but i was thinking that theyd be SO easy to make on your own - all you really need is some ribbon or fabric and those metal rings. but i dont know where to find rings that size/thickness. hopefully someone here will!! anyone?

(if you dont know what i mean, click here)

thanks!

Even though Halloween is still 7 months off, my friends and I are doing themed costumes this year, and I'm the only one of us who sews. So guess who gets most of the work to do... :)

I imagine I'll have lots of questions as time goes on, but here's the first...

I need to make a petticoat type piece to go under a skirt and make it really poufy... I have plenty of tulle, but the question is how to get the most poufiness out of it. Should I make a very simple skirt and sew rows of tulle to it, or is there a better way of doing this?

Thanks in advance for the help! :)

(As an aside, for the curious, we're doing Alice in Wonderland, but we're going more for the America McGee's Alice (video game) look than the Disney look... I get to be Alice... :) )

tracy is a princess
tracy's crown )

my good friend of 6 or 7 years years turned 25 this past week.
she's really cute and she's girly in a cartoon very far from reality manner.
she likes to play princess and baby and throw little kid fits for fun and stuff. i think she's awesome.

so yeah, she digs butterflies. has a tatt of one. she likes the colors orange and pink.
i couldn't find good orange pretty beads to match the pink ones, but here is a crown i made out of wire and beads just for her. it's really pretty and pretty sturdy. i made a bracelet to match but didn't take a photo of it.
she was so happy to have it, it made me so happy she liked it.

i loved the dangling things. i just couldn't stop playing with them.

it took me over 6 hours to make this damned thing.

Hi I am new to the commmunity been lurking alittle and commenting...I am a crafter from way back. I have been since I was alittle kid...crafty lol not sure in a good way but anyway.

I was looking on ebay last night for at some mosaic tiles...and i saw something I had not seen before and NOW I am obsessed with figuring out how to make them.

They are the little glass mosaic tiles but they have been made with clear glass and back with fabric, then cut to about 1x1 squares. I was curious has anyone done that. I am sooo not paying like $14 for 30 tiles, that I think I can make myself...
so my question is HOW do you attach the fabric to the glass then cut it so that it does fray or is stiff enough to cut with the glass cutter. Or and I thinking about this is the wrong way.
I was thinking attach the fabric to the glass THEN cut or would it be the otherway around?
So if someone would help me out with this I would appreciate it...ALSO if there are any crafties in Georgia I was thinking about maybe doing a craft club thing 1x a month....anyone interested?

red canaries: "you zig, i'll zag"

my most inventive idea ever. steal it and i'll hunt you down! ;)

attract fish, not flies, with this awesome collection of fishing tackle for your ears. that's right, bait for your ears. you'll attract weird looks at the very least. let's call it boy tackle. wear them two in each ear to better your chances at hooking 'em. the jelly ones are chewy and will bounce with you as you walk! the feathery ones float horizontally for better aerodynamics as they swim through the air. each has their own personality and all sport vibrant colours.

gone fishin' )

I made a post on Shaking the Void in regards to donations. I'm asking anyone who comes across the site to donate what they can so that I can make hats, stuffed animals, and blankets for people in need (initially, it'll be cancer patients in the local hospitals, and to the children's ward where they may be ill or part of a burn victim unit). I'd prefer donations of yarn (preferably 70-100% cotton, but I'll take any yarn at all) or miscellaneous crochet items (hooks, pins, etc). If you don't have these things, but want to donate, there's a button on my website to donate money.

If you can't do either, perhaps you can join me instead by creating gifts for your own local hospitals.

My Nan

I just really felt like telling you all about my Nan (My grandmother from my father's side).
I think that she is such an amazing woman.

When she was in school and about to graduate, her class had to make their own dresses. Each day they would work on the sewing machine in class. She was sick of waiting for the girls ahead of her to get done, so she started bringing her material home. She finished her dress before anyone else. The teacher didn't think that she had done it herself, so she made her pull the whole dress apart and re-do it. So she did, and she still finished before anyone else. She won this huge sewing kit with tons of needles and thread and patterns. Some company wanted her to work for them, making clothing for young girls.
Her father didn't want her to do it, because he always thought that she thought of herself as better then everyone else. So he wouldn't let her do anything to actually better herself.

But she continued making clothing, and selling them on the side to make a little money for herself.
She's been knitting and crocheting ever since she was just a young girl.

Now, she is blind, has bad arthritis, and cries every time she tries to stand up and walk. But she still knits little baby outfits to give to charity. Outfits for pre-mature babies, and ones for older babies who's mothers can't afford to buy them any clothes.

I just think she is so inspiring. I'm trying to learn how to knit and sew and all of that good stuff now. I want to craft for a good cause like she does.

Administrative Notice

As I'm sure you all have noticed, LJ has been acting up lately. Since last night, it seems to be loading erratically, and giving a lot of error messages when people try to make posts or comments. It seems to often be taking posts/comments, but still giving an error message. So people assume their post or comment didn't take, and they post again. And again. And again.

I have spent a lot of time today cleaning up duplicate posts/comments. LJ is acting up when trying to delete things too, so it's taking a lot of time. Please, for the love of all that is holy, PLEASE double check to be sure that your post or comment has definitely not shown up before attempting to re-post. Also, please note that the post may not show up on your friends page, but still be there. To be sure, check the craftgrrl community's journal itself.

If you have a post or comment that does show up multiple times, please try to take care of it yourself. You can edit or delete posts here, and you can delete comments by clicking on this button: next to your comment.

I know this is frustrating, and I really appreciate everyone's patience with this problem and with each other until LJ gets things taken care of. Thank you!

Conversion

Is there any way to easily convert knitting patterns to crochet and vice versa? Do certain stitches in each correspond to specific ones in the other medium?

Thanks!

The Victim.

Any suggestions on something wearable (DIY) that I could make out of this? Im thinking something easy but still good-looking like .. a skirt maybe? With the "Got Skates?" on the butt. Or is that stupid. I dont know. Im really clueless like that.

Anyway, suggestions = <3.

hi~~
i hope this isn't violating any rules or anything because its not exactly a craft question-- i hope its not but as a protection clause= i hereby apologize in the case of a wrongful post on my part and will delete such post with due speed if convicted.

but ok its about my prom dress. and since the explanation is inevitably long as hell i'm going to let you decide if you want to help or not....

Hey, I gotta question..

I want to make an off-the-shoulder shirt and I just wanna ask, since I have ratherly large breasts, should I do anything to help with that, like darts? And if so, how do I go about doing that? ( I don't want it baggy in the armpit area, if that makes sense)
[identity profile] disclaimher.livejournal.com
is there such a thing as spray interfacing (interfacing from a can)?
[identity profile] tummymunkey.livejournal.com
okay. now this had better be original and if i see anyone run off with this idea i'll chase after them with scissors! scissors and sharp sharp rotary cutters.

red! red makes me angry! shopping tote made from a canadian hockey jersey, eh! exclamation mark! i must have 8 cubic feet of safeway plastic shopping bags that are quickly multiplying under the sink. that, and they make a crinkly yucky noise. reduce reuse recycle! the reusable bag, great for all your shopping, beaching, or gymming needs!
complete with zip pocket inside for the wallet and keys!

this little piggy went to market... )
