I finally got myself a digital camera (well, got one for my b-day since I can't afford a decent one for myself), so hopefully I'll be able to share some of the stuff I make on here more often.

I (like quite a few other craftgrrls, I suspect) have a bunch of these POM Wonderful bottles lying around since they're such a cool shape that they're begging to be made something nice. So, I started with one of these:

and ended up with one of these )

A few questions if anyone would please help, it would be appreciated:

1) Any ideas on what to do with glass beer bottles?

2) I was interested on selling and trading my stuff but not having my own site. Maybe doing it through live journal trading/selling stuff. How do you go about doing that? It confuses me with the postage!

3) What are good sites to sell your stuff through, consignment ones or however you spell it?

4) I saw someone made earings out of monopoly houses thats soo cute but just some ideas on how to make a hole in the houses 2 add the earing too

thanks

I got a new pair of jeans from Old Navy. They're a little too short, but they were only $10. I don't want to cut them up, I want to wear them. I could theoretically wear them exclusively with heels, but I'm more of a running shoe person. There isn't enough hem to let them out, and I don't want to just add dangly beadwork (don't like the way it looks)... is there any way to salvage these pants?

I made some awesome earrings today! They are the pie pieces from Trivial Pursuit

I'm thinking of doing my first altoid sculpey tin and I was wondering about stamping on the clay. Is there any tips to doing this. Is there specific kinds of stamps you should use? I want to make a small ashtray for my boyfriend for when we go camping and I'd like to use a Tigger stamp since its his nickname, but I don't want to ruin the stamp by getting clay in it as I am planning on using it for some other stuff too.

Ok I'm in a bit of a bind. Does anyone know if Armor Etch will work on polished chrome? It works beautifully on glass so I was hoping it'll work on chrome since it's just a smooth object like glass.

Anyone?

I'm sure someone has asked this before, but I couldn't find anything in the memories...

My friends birthday was a few days ago. NE ways, she got a magnetic board for notes and stuff when she goes to college. She was complaining about how it would take her forever to find magnets so I figured I would make her some.

My question is, what to do you put over the magnets to seal them? I want to print out pictures of her fave bands, and actors, and paste them onto the magnets. But what would you cover them with so they don't rib or fade? I was thinking that lamanate stuff that teachers put over things at school, but that would peel off over time.

Any suggestions?

One of my favorite crafts is covering tins with Sculpey. I find it incredibly addictive, and the possibilities are truly endless. However, I rarely come up with anything to put on the inside of these tins, until this time.

This tin is about the size of an Altoids tin (I found blank tins of several sizes at www.polymerclayexpress.com) and I’ve covered it with Sculpey. I stamped the top of the tin with a pretty vine pattern, and I’ll probably highlight that part with rub ‘n buff at some point. I used a clay extruder to create the more-or-less uniform ropes around the top and bottom.

And here’s what it looks like on the outside!  )

I am most proud of the inside, though, and it took a lot of trial and error to get it right. I got these tiny glass bottles at a rubber stamp convention for use in altered books but I thought they’d make perfect treasures to go in little tin shrines. I took some 3/4 inch foam and cut it to the size of the tin, then traced around the bottle and cut out a hollow in the foam for it to rest in. Then I placed a piece of velvet over the foam, and pressed the bottle into the hollow. Since I used panne stretch velvet, this worked well while staying roughly smooth on top of the foam, however, this did not last when I tried to glue the velvet to the foam. So, I got out my trusty friend: fusible interfacing! I love this stuff. I find it so useful. I cut the interfacing a bit larger than the foam insert, and cut out the hole where the bottle would go. Then I put the interfacing down on the foam, put the velvet on the interfacing, and pressed the bottle into the hole, then ironed right over the bottle and foam to get the interfacing to stick to the velvet and keep it from stretching all over the place. This also prevented the glue from soaking through to ruin the pile of the velvet. I also cut another piece of velvet backed with interfacing to glue to the roof of the tin.

And here’s the inside!  )

I know some other girls have those T-183(or whatever there called) calculators in here. I just went out and bought some rhinestones to glue onto there but I don't know what to do for a design? Can anyone give me any ideas?

Do any of you lovely people know how to hang something without damaging it (nails, tacks, tape) or framing it?

I've got tons of crap I plan on hanging in my bedroom once it's painted, but I don't want to damage any of it, nor do I really want to frame it or use a bulletien board (it'd end up looking waaaaay over cluttered). Any ideas?

Peeh Ehs: I already tried sticking a sample chunk of magazine to my wall with polymer clay... It worked well for about a day until it left little grease spots on my page...

Can clear nailpolish prevent unravelling of certain fabrics? I'm working on a skirt (from pants) with ruffles, and I don't have enough room to hem before I add the ruffles, so can I just brush clear nailpolish over it? I know it works with runs in panty hose or tights, so I figured it might work on other things too. The fabric is a polyester/rayon blend. If I can't use clear nailpolish, any ideas or suggestions? Hopefully something you know already works from experience/etc.

Also, I plan on making unique purses to sell. I have ideas on the body, shape, and design, etc., but I don't have many ideas for purse straps. So far I have:

Chains of some sort
old belts with buckles removed (webbed belts?)
strips of fabric, mismatching or matching
beads on cord or string (but its not very sturdy..)
braided fabric or some sort of macrame?

I kind of want them to be sturdy, reliable and unique at the same time. Any ideas? Hopefully that I can make from stuff found around the house or that might already be in my sewing boxes?

And any advice on hand-sewing purses that won't fall apart? I know the ones I make for my own personal use are sturdy enough, but I don't want people to be disappointed in what they buy from me. If they buy from me. I use embroidery thread and use double stitching most of the time.. I dunno, any advice in general would be awesome.

Anyways, thanks! :D

p.s. - I hope this isn't too annoying because its text-only >.< I just don't have any photos of finished crafts to post right now. but I will soon!

hey you crafty kids you,

to get straight to the point, i'm working on a project made of matt board that requires several circles and thin rings and rectangles. i was wondering if any of you knew of a good tool or technique for cutting smooth shapes out of such a thick material (razor blades can be a little hard to curve and scissors have the potential to chew it up). i figured if anyone would know of a cool little tool, it would be one of you guys.

thanks in advance.

hey!

so i bought this amazing shirt at a thrift store, with dinosaurs and dinosaur bones on it. the shirt looked like it'd fit me, and i didn't have time to try it on, so i just quick bought it and left. later, when i tried it on, i found out that it didn't fit. but i love the picture on the front. the dinosaur picture takes up about half the size of the shirt. any ideas what i could do? i was thinking make the shirt a purse, but i'm not very good at sewing.

He is half the size of the other dolls...and I really enjoyed making his extra small clothes. His beard is just yarn I sewed in and frayed and then worked between my fingers. I still need to make him shoes..but I am out of felt. Hope you all like him!

Hey does anyone have a clutch tutorial? I looked in the FAQ and found the yellow ruffled clutch, but it didn't load up. Thanks again! (I'll be posting pictures soon, I just got my NEW sewing machine :-D!!!)
[identity profile] bitexxxme.livejournal.com
hello all-

i've been making little clothing repairs / alterations by hand for a few years, but i've decided that i want to get into more substantial projects...so now i need a sewing machine of some sort. what i need is the cheapest thing possible that isn't a piece of junk that will fall apart immediately - in other words, something both reliable and affordable. any specific ones i should try to find?

also, what stores can one find them in? (i live in the middle of suburban nowhere and it's tough to find a retail place that isn't a big chain, so if anyone knows of any big chain stores that have a good selection, please let me know).

thanks!

I had an old jacket that I never wore because it was too plain.

I was inspired by the embroidery on my new pants so I bought some metallic acrylic paints and made my own stencils, and I created this:

the front, and details of the dragon )

I love it! What do you all think?

Hi everyone,

Just a quick note to let you know that this entry:

http://www.livejournal.com/community/craftgrrl/4039899.html

has been added to the memories under the "Sewing" and "Clothing alteration" categories. There's a link in the comments on how to make your own undies if anyone has been looking for info on it. :)

Happy crafting!

I had surgery on Thursday which has left me house bound because I can't drive for another two weeks. It's tragic really. However it's left me with more free time than any one person really needs, so I started on some Christmas cards for a few clients.

I stamped this with the versamark pad on watercolor paper then embossed it in black (I stamp nearly everything in versamark then follow it with a colored embossing powder) then I used some chalks and my medium tip blender pen to color it in. It's mounted in some plaid embossed red paper and I think it's really cute.

Thanks

I have a "genuine leather" belt that is comprised of two strips of leather attatched back to back. The 2 pieces are starting to split where the holes are, and I'm afraid if this continues to split, it will weaken the studs and make them fall off. What is the best way to reattatch them, glue I suppose, but what kind?

Hi, I am wondering if anyone knows where to get gemstones (the ones like used for nail art), I need a lot of them, preferably all in one color or maybe 2 colors. E-bay hasn't offered me much help so I'm hoping someone knows if I can buy them at a local craft store or something. Thanks for the help guys! I am using them for back-to-school decorating, got a boring calculator and need to spruce it up a bit. :)
