Hi everyone,

I'm gearing up to get enough inventory for a christmas show this year, selling my pysanky. I'm working on Snowflake Ornaments and would like your advice as to the back. I normally write Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays etc..

Would I sell more if I included the year, or would that be a downfall?? Thank you!

Okay...I don't know how to sew...I mean, I can make pillows and I can mend my socks and such but I really have no clue how to do anything beyond that.

But hanging around [livejournal.com profile] hip_domestics and [livejournal.com profile] craftgrrl I've gotton the bug to buy a sewing machine. I really really don't want to buy a really expensive machine that I'll hardly ever use. But I did find a damn cheap one and I wanted to get everyone's feedback.

Here is the machine I'm considering purchasing:

Sometimes I wonder how close I am to being one of those crazy-Appliqued-Vest -wearing ladies that does nothing but craft fairs. I am so overly cautious of making crafts that can't be misconstrued as "out-of-touch". I bet all those "decorative country craft" making women started off thinking that their crafting was cool and somehow fell into a world of Beanie Babies and Pony-bead scarves and Wooden Snowmen.

but maybe that's just me....

ed: I also think that the punk-DIY culture is being appropriated by the sort of "Desperate Housewives" set. I actually read something in a local Chicago Paper that said that women are cutting back on working in the corporate realm because it is just too hard and they're more interested in knitting booties and Monogramming towels -- ik! I don't want to be seen in that light either!

ipod case

i want to make a case for my ipod. i know i can knit one, but i'd rather sew one. i never sew, but if it's a simple pattern, i think i could hack it.

i went online to try to find some patterns, but i couldn't. i did find this:

on this web site. and i loooove these cases. i can't make anything like that, but a nice pouch with a flap would do.

does anyone have a simple pattern? or could you help me try to figure out the measurements and make up a pattern myself? THANKS!

i have a question for all you diy businesswomen out there. i have been thinking lately about making scarves to sell. i love knitting with novelty yarns, but as i am a broke little girl i can't really afford to make anything for myself out of these. i went to a gallery showing of the works of local stitch-and-bitchers last weekend, and noticed that all the fancy scarves they had on the wall were very simple, garter stitch on large needles, and the only thing that really made them worth looking at was the quality of the yarn. i mean, anything can look good if you use really nice yarn, but i can't afford that. and they were charging insane amounts, 35-60 dollars per scarf, but the things were definitely selling. so i'm contemplating going into business for myself, but i'd like to understand my chances of actually making money here. so my questions are:

- what have you found to be the best venues for selling? a website? ebay? trying to find a local shop to consign it?
- what would be a reasonable price range for a novelty sort of scarf?
- have you had good luck with selling in the past, or am i wasting my time? what percentage of what you've tried to sell has actually sold?

Hey all! This is my first post. I enjoy looking at your wonderful crafts. haha it motivates me to get going on my own.

I was looking through the memories and I see directions for Sock Monkeys,Dogs, and Sockotopus, but I do not see any patterns to make the Sock Moose I see a bunch of websites with ones that you can buy, but its not the same as if you were to make it. Here is the link to a picture of a sock moose you can buy

If someone has the directions to make a Sock Moose I would be REALLLY grateful. I'm making it as a part of my boyfriends Christmas present. (I'm decorating a box, and filling it with his favorite things. It will be his "Happy Thoughts Box")

On a side note, I am going to make sock snowmen for a few friends for Christmas. Also, I am going to buy small flower pots and decorate them with their names in puffy paint. I am going to fill them with small glass beads and make flower pens out of either fake flowers, or DUCT take flowers. I figure it will be a cute thing to put on their desks to use for pens (they are all students). I'll post pictures of the final products when they are done. :)

A couple of weeks ago my (wonderful) fiance bought me some Lion Brand Watercolors on sale. He got me two balls of four colors, and on Friday I finally decided what to do with it.

Pictures )

It is super soft and I know the pictures are horrible, but there really are four colors. Blue, green, purple, and cream/off-white. I am donating it to the local "Gifts From The Heart" shop, but if it does not sell there I will probably put it up on eBay. It is about 40" wide and 55-60" long.

I had to share. It is my favorite project yet.

friday after school art club had a "paint day" :) everyone can go in the art room and work on things from class or do various things around the school. My friend and I got the very cool job of paiting silhouettes (sp?) in the hallways! yea! We're not done, theres just these 3

i looked through the memories but couldn't seem to find anything relating to said topic:

i went to this crazy sale the other day and bought a bunch of awesome little round tins to use for some crafty playtime - but they're still full of "cherry red" shoe polish. i am more than happy to just scrape the stuff out and use the tins - but it's such a beautful color that I thought i'd at least ask if there was anything creative I could do with shoe polish!? so... what do you think? any ideas? Thanks!

Okay, So I want to go to an art school for fashion design. (MassART is my *goal* for the first 2 years, then FIT)

Anyway, I've been sewing for only a few months, but I've made a lot of stuff and I need to make/put together a portfolio.

This is where the question comes into play. I have this 40% off Joann preferred customer discount off any one item, it doesnt say i cant use it on the dressform, but im kinda thinking they might not let me, since its like knocking off 80 bucks.

btw I was planning on getting the "dritz" dressform since its the only one they have, anyone have anything to say about that? ;P

I joined this group over the weekend and I am really enjoying seeing what projects people are working on. Let's see... I am 24 and I have always been into crafts. I took art classes in school but hated most every project because the teachers were so rigid and controlling. I never took any art classes at my college because you had to major in art to take them. Unfortunately, I think I majored in everything but art.

I just learned how to crochet a couple of weeks ago but I am not really good at it. I do odd things when I turn to start a new row (not up on the lingo, sorry!) but it still looks decent. I am currently working on a scarf which is turning out okay. I also like weaving but I don't have a loom so I have to improvise.

At some point, when I have the space and the money, I want to get into quilting. My great-grandmother made quilts and I have studied them (they are very simple ones) enough until I think I could replicate her work. I guess for now though I will stick to crocheting. It's cheaper.

Anyhoo, glad to meet you all!

I have big ambitions for the amount of crafting I'm going to get done by the holidays this year. I am hoping to complete at least 4 scrapbooks, and I prefer to use letter stickers for all my lettering. I liketo have the same font stickers in various colors. AC Moore used to sell like a big pack of like 16 different colors in the same font and such but they no longer do. SO basically...does anyone know where I can buy letter stickers in bulk basically? Im in central Jersey and anyplace online or in the tri-state area would be greatly appreciated!! Even if it isn't in actual bulk just more than one sheet per package, thanks so much!

I found a recipe online for delicious sounding candy cane (pepermint) body scrub!
Anyway, you make pepermint salt scrub, and separate it into three sections. Leave one white, use red food coloring for one, and green for the other.
Than layer a jar with the scrub and voila!
I havent made it yet, but I bought this incredible jar (or rather, 3, and I will later buy one for meeeeeeeee)@loblaws/superstore for about $3.50/each.

Awesome jar! )
