i have been drooling over the idea of making those jackets with the frayed edges ever since i saw what fun weaves that fabric come in. but i never could bring myself to wear one, even if i did ever get one for myself sewed.
(hell, i have 4 yards of a black and pink brocade that i still have to make a jacket with) but i really liked the idea of fraying the edges of something decoratively after sewing it.
so then my friend who's getting married asked me if i knew how to make paper flowers, and i mentioned that i had a book somewhere, and it all came together in a blinding flash!

tweedy flower pins!
i'm still finessing the embroidery and structure and all, but feel free to come look at my (overly image intense) documentation of the process here )

hello, ladies and gents! i'm hoping to get a good suggestion or two on a peacoat i helped. over a year ago i found a well-fitting plain black peacoat in a thrift store, and after the shoulder pads were removed, it hasn't been touched. why waste a great coat? so, to save it from eternity in the hall closet, i added trim...

I'm currently making a belt out of pull tabs usaing the directions from: http://www.livejournal.com/community/craftgrrl/4398729.html . I'm making it with a slight variation designed by mon amie, looktang, where you crisscross on both sides. une photo? ici:

Rainbow cord is so freaking awesome.
Just came home from a party tonight where I collected an additional 29 pull tabs. the pic shows the belt with only 18 or 19.. so it is going to grow considerably longer in the next 15 mins, heh

Alright, I have checked the FAQ's and many of the stenciling communities as well.
I'm having problems with cutting out my stencils. I am using the recomended fonts and the recomended paper.
I have tried using adhesive spray to attach my paper with the font onto poster board.
I couldnt get smooth edges with my exacto blade.
I tried using a thicker paper and covered it with tape and then cut the letters out. Again, I cant get clean lines.
I tried just using paper! STILL NO LUCK!

Ugghh, I'm being as patient as I can, but this is frustrating!
Can anyone offer me tips on getting smoother lines with my letters?
Or anything? Is this just going to take me a while to get used to doing?

RAHH!

i'm not sure how many of you are into scrapbooking but you are my craft answer kings + queens = )

i'm making a book using this tutorial i got from getcrafty years ago. to make the cover it is suggested that one uses cardboard. i'm using 12x12 paper, i don't have cardboard that size and would use/buy folders if the ugly lines wouldn't show up. could i just use cardstock and call it a day?

edit: here's a photo of the sample. orange = cover

Hello Everyone! I'm new here. I just joined. I've been on LJ for a year and I can't believe I didn't stumble onto this community earlier! I love doing crafty things. :) A little about me: I love macrame and beading. I love to collect fun.interesting beads, even if I can't always find a craft project for them. I do some crochet, an occasional bit of sewing, some floral stuff (My mother and I did all the floral arrangements for my wedding, except the bouquet). I like to try and reuse things for craft purposes before throwing them away.

So, now the real post:

I have some old jeans that I'd like to recycle. I recently cleaned out my closet, and I donated a lot of clothing, but I reserved a few things that I thought had cool patterns and colors that I thought I might like to try something craft with. Any ideas? I have a sewing machine that I inherited and some minimal experience sewing simple things, and lots of other fun craft things like silk flowers, ribbons, etc., so I'm very open to suggestions if anybody has any ideas for how to put some old clothing to good use. I also saved a few t-shirts that had some fun logos and pictures on them that I thought I could use fabric swatches from too.

Thanks!

I have figured out a new scarf style for me...my friend saw someone wearing something similar so I figured out how to make it by trial and error and I am really pleased with it. It is kind of a spiral/ra-ra skirt. I am sure there are others out there similar, but I am chuffed I worked it out for myself! What do you think?

Step this way... )

Well, since I'm new to this community and I like to do macrame, I thought I'd post some pics of some of the jewelry I've made behind the cut. I'm a little busy with work right now, but one day I'll have time to work on some more. These are mostly necklaces and one pair of earrings. I've made some other stuff too like belts and bracelets and hopefully my next project will be a purse or bag of sorts, but these are some of the better ones that I have pictures of.

See my macrame here. )

my mom went to mardi gras and came home with 4 trash bags full of beads. i went through them and picked out my favorites, but now i'm not sure what to do with them. i can't take them apart and string them into a new necklace because they are the kind that are attached to the string.

any ideas?

ps. edit: do to a very high volume of requests, and my mother getting skiddish to all of them...mardi gras beads are available if you don't mind paying postage.

hot damn if it isn't raining, thundering, _and_ fogging. i love it.
i finished up this wee book today in my psychology class. it has a handsewn binding and is covered with a postcard from the riverviews gallery in lynchburg, va. the artist is W.H. Rutherfoord. the interior pages are recycled paper.
the spine features visitor stickers from the pews of a methodist church down the street. if you're in the area, i highly recommend the show. at the gallery, not the church.

I found out that my grandmother wants to give me my grandfather's cherished kilt.  Problem is I'm a woman, and don't think I'll wear it, and wool makes me itch.  Does anybody have any ideas how to reuse it?

Oh boy, I bet this is alot to ask.

Buuuttt....

I bought a Nintendo at a thrifstore, and for some reason my friend took out all of its guts to see why it wasn't working, and I guess something in it is broken, so we just threw away all the inside parts. So now I have like...a shell of a Nintendo. And I keep on racking my brain for ideas because there just HAS to be something to do with it! But I can't think of anything!

So, I'm still a not so skilled sewer. This is my second sewing machine project so be kind.

I found one of those awful off-white totes for cheap at A.C. Moore along with some pearl gray RIT dye. It didn't suck up the color as well as I wanted, but I'm still happy with it. And then I added the front pocket and did the lining. And then I put it all together. Presidents day crafting is awesome.

The lining courtesy of my grandma's sheets:

Have a good presidents day!

Awww, my grandma's so cute. Look what she gave me.

She thought maybe I could use it for my sewing... Needless to say, it's my new/old "Project in Progress" bag. :)

Did I ever post pictures of my Valentine's Day skirt here? If not, I will.

Also, does anyone have any good ideas for stuff to make out of old socks? I cleaned out my sock drawer and I feel bad throwing a bunch of socks away. AND I DON'T WANT TONS OF PEOPLE SUGGESTING SOCK MONKIES. I can't stand sock monkies. o_o

ok crafty girls,
i have a baby shower question. this does not pertain to the mommy-to-be, but for grandma-to-be.

i have some ideas (gotten here! yay!) for the mommy, shes 17 (i know, so young!) so im trying to do some younger, hipper things for baby (maybe ill take some pictures and share it all with you when im done).

i have NO idea what to get grandma though, but i really do want to get her something, she has been the most supportive mom i think i could ever imagine. shes really worked her butt off during this pregnancy.
so really, any ideas would be great.
thank you so much!

A few of my friends and I had a "stencil party" and we decorated some shirts and hoodies :)
I don't have pics of their shirts, but I do have a pic of the hoodie I stenciled:

I made this today. I just sort of guessed my way along. I must be dense, because all the tutorials I've seen haven't really made sense to me. Anyways, it's pink silk/satin blend stuff and a vintage seashell button on the top. The back isn't as interesting. Just a circle of white card and a pin back glued to it.

Hi. I'm new here, and have really been enjoying checking out all the pictures of the stuff you guys have been making. I don't have pictures of my most recent projects yet, but I want to show off the jackets I did for my nieces (8 and 10)this Christmas.

My boyfriend and I just moved into a big new WHITE condo.
We're in the midst of redecorating our guest bathroom..
I'm obsessed with venus fly traps and love the color green,
so..soon it will be my lime green carnivorous plant paradise.
It's far from finished, so it still looks kind of messy
in the photos..but I'll definitely post more when it's complete.
I'm making pretty much everything that goes into the room..Projects
I'm currently in the middle of include:
shower curtain, mirror treatments, new countertop, shelves, venus fly trap wire/clay sculpture,
new painted pots for my venus fly traps and other carnivorous plants..(photos later)
I'm driving myself absolutely crazy between checking wet paint status and running
around like a maniac doing 30 other things..This bathroom may cost me my sanity,
but it'll be the the ultimate place to pee:)

Well, about two weeks ago i moved into a new apartment with my boyfriend. Lovely little place if i do say so myself. Of course i have tons of ideas on what i can do to this place. The thing i'm mainly focused on is one room in particular. Attatched to the back of the bed room is a enclosed balcony, like an extra room added on. Me and the sig. other decided that this room is going to be the computer/ craft room (his idea by the way, love him i do!). The room is rather small, but just right for the two of us. Currently my crsfts are still in boxes, and he's weird about having his RECLINER as a computer chair, but will be moving that into the living room. I'm starting on it tomarrow and finishing (hopefullywednesday) I'll have pics up soon of the apartment and how it looks and my craftyness that will be art woork all over the place. hehehehe

My boyfriend and I just started a notebook/journal that we will write down notes, thoughts, etc. in and share with one another.

He's decorating the outside of it, and I'm doing the inside.

For the front cover, I printed out various pictures that we've taken during the 8 months we've been together, and glued them onto the inside cover using paper cement. I then sprayed it with clear acrylic sealer in order to protect the paper.

So my sister goes to college in Mt.Pleasant. There is no mount anything there. It's flatter than, well I don't know... something flat. But no mountains at all. So what do we do about that? we climb it anyways! )

Anyways I have a question as well. I'm moving in a few months and am trying to think of something creative to do with all my concert shirts I continually buy, but don't wear. I'm planning on decorating my new bedroom with the typical music posters and want to somehow incorporate the shirts into that. Throw pillows? Some sort of window treatment? Some creative way to hang them? Suggestions greatly appreciated.

i'm working on my first ever embroidery project - embroidering a picture of a casette tape on a handbag i sewed this weekend.

i've only been using the sublime stitching "how to" to guide me, & i decided on using the split stitch to do the thick line border on the tape. i ordered the stitch-it kit, but it hasn't been delivered yet.

however! before the book arrives, i'm going to be ready to do the fill colour on the cassette tape. i wonder if you crafty kids can tell me: what's the best stitch technique for embroidering large-ish blocks of colour? i'm assuming that chain stitch is where it's at?

your guidance is appreciated! merci!

i had these metal charm things for scrapbooking, and i dont scrapbook. i decided to make earrings! ive seen pairs of unmatching earrings (think a small key on one earring and a lock on the other...things like that) instead of making just 2 earrings, i made four because theyre all the same theme (beach) and i can just pick two that i like on whatever day and wear them and theyll automatically match.

in the pictures, 2 arent on earrings yet, i ran out of the actual earring part but they'll be put on with jump rings by tomorrow.

sorry the pictures are a little blurry, my webcam isnt that good.

I checked the memories, but didn't see anything regarding hinge purse frames...

I just bought a "BagLady" purse frame. I bought this particular one because it included a pattern, and I'd never done something like this before. I knew that I would want to change the proportions of the pictured purse to get the size I wanted (really going for more of a small change purse), but I figured having a pattern would help me make the alterations correctly. Unfortunately, when I got it home and opened it to look at the pattern, it's just two rectangles (cut two of A and one of B) with very vague markings. The bottom of one piece says "place on fold", and nowhere in the directions does it mention a fold of any kind. The writing is *kind of* on the bottom, but not really, and the stitching dotted line just goes off the bottom of the piece. I cut out three pieces of plastic bag to try and understand how it goes together, but matching up the dots didn't seem to give me anything but a triangle! I rearranged the pieces every way I could think to, but the "sides and bottom" B piece just doesn't turn into sides or a bottom at any point. What am I doing wrong? The directions are only four sentences long, and there's so much detail left out!!

"Sew fabric and lining as follows: Lay piece B and one of piece A right sides together matching dots. Sew by hand or machine. Repeat with the second piece A. Clip as needed."

I know I can't show the entire pattern/"directions" here, but does anybody have a way to explain how to properly piece together a purse on a hinged metal frame? I went to the website for this distributor, and they show a picture of the frame but offer no further explanation, and you can't even see the pattern itself online. I just can't figure this out!

Thanks in advance, for anyone that may have done this before and know what I'm supposed to do!

(the picture of the frame I bought--on the purse their pattern supposedly creates--is at http://www.baglady.com/FreeFabricBag.htm#BL50 --third down from the top.)
