. . . I'm a dumbass!

I've figured out why my circles were screwing up. I was making my loop out of my base chain (like I was starting a granny square) and not single crocheting the length before making it into a circle.

**slaps forehead** no wonder it was looking retarded.

I picked up this old 80s book (The Pattern Library: Crochet) and it showed the part of making a round and I realized I was doing it wrong. Such a dumbass.

BTW, for crocheters, I'd suggest hunting for this book around Amazon or something (I'm rentin' my from the library). ITs got all sorts of stitch patters for afghans, lace, and regular stitches. Its really cool. And since its published in Britian, our fellow graft grrls across the pond will find it an easy read.

THanks for those who helped me. I'll be putting your suggestions and the books together. I've got a few projects I'm making plans for (I've got a first birthday coming up. . .). I'll be sure to post what I find.

Of interest to all the pocket shrine makers and polymer clay fans who are obsessed with covering Altoids tins, Altoids is holding a contest to see the best and most creative re-uses and reimaginings of their tins.

I have a friend who just bought a messenger bag for his school stuff/laptop. He loves it, but the strap has no padding or anything and somewhat hurts. Is there anyway to insert padding or attach it? I'm not sure if you can tell me without more of an idea of what the bag looks like, so I can get a picture if you need one...

Thanks:)

This scrap room makes me absolutely DROOL.

I want to just jump in a wallow in it.

I don't sort my paper or embellishments by theme or type. Instead they are stored by COLOR. Seeing all these colors all organized really gets my juices flowing.

helloooo, i'm new :)

i saw someone's finished altered book posted on here not too long ago (at least i believe it was in this community..? or maybe it was in the memories, i'm not sure which.. anyway!) and they printed out butterflies on the actual pages of the book. i've thought of doing that before but i have the stupidest question now and i can't find an actual technique anywhere. i'm sure it's the easiest thing but i just can't figure out how to slyly reattach the page to the book! haha, i'm really sorry for the probably really obvious answer, but i honestly am having the hugest brainfart right now. i've looked through the memories and didn't find much about this, specifically -- i just don't want a huge gob of glue somewhere in the middle of book, you know? i don't want it to be obvious that i tore a page out and reattached it. so what's your secret?
again, apologies for the dumb question... any help at all would be much appreciated. thanks so much :)

DONUTS! (bagels??)

I've yet to put "frosting" on them so they basically look like bagels.

I'm not sure at the moment how im going to go about it, though.

Are they good? Should I continue on to make a dozen just to be weird and cute like that?

there's two sewing machines i've got my eye on that are on ebay. this one ends in 3 hours: Simplicity Denim Expert and then this Kenmore Sewing Machine. i am most definately getting the kenmore if you all think its a better deal. they're both in good condition, i think the kenmore is like new. i'm not going to get a mini since everybody says i'm probably gonna want a full sized one in the future. i know i'm annoying with this, but please help. i have to have a sewing machine soon. i've got sooo many sketches of things that i want to sew.

what's better than making bags out of old pairs of pants? really, so easy but so ultra-cool! my roommate had given me a pair of grey cords that she had picked up at a thrift store last year so after having them in my scraps bin for over a year, i thought i'd make her a purse for her birthday! because what shows that you care and are broke better than a handmade present!?!

I noticed that the Amy Sedaris fan site received this email from The Believer magazine regarding Amy's new advice column, "Sedaratives."

------

Hello, friend.

First of all, we'd like to thank you for spreading the word about Sedaratives, Amy's advice column. The response has been overwhelming, and Amy is scarcely able to answer all of the letters we've received.

Secondly, we were wondering if you'd be willing to pass along another announcement to Amy's fans. We have more than enough letters for her August "cooking" column, so no further questions are necessary. But she's ready to begin work on her September column, which will tackle the far-reaching theme of crafting. As you know, Amy is a bona fide expert in the crafting genre, and she's willing to assist you with all of your crafting queries, from homemade clothing to home decor to gifts for the holidays. Letters should be sent via email to sedaratives@believermag.com.

Thanks again for your tireless efforts. You are appreciated.

Hello everyone!

My mom decided that I had inspired her to make a necklace. So when I was at the bead store, she picked out some beads & findings. Here are the fruits of her labour! (And mine, since I had to start & finish the necklace for her!)

Mama's necklace! )

I also made a necklace yesterday:)

My necklace! )

3 pictures total under the cuts.

Thanks for looking! All comments are appreciated, and I will be sure to pass any comments about my Mom's neckalce along to her!

I hate white walls.
I mean really hate them.

So I made a wall art installation at my old apartment of the Trix Rabbit using nothing but tape, construction paper and wrapping paper, I figured lots of other crafty kids might want to know how to do it.

I pitched the DIY article to the magazines ReadyMade and Budget Living, but no one seemed to care enough to publish my DIY article on it, so then documented how to do it on Grrl.com:
DIY Cartoon Mural

I hope you try making your own mural... it's cheap and fun and can come down easily when you get bored.

So this is slightly in the area of gratuitous self promotion, but since I'm constantly seeing sewing questions on here I thought it was applicable.
If not, feel free to delete.

So I know alot of you out there sew, I also know, from personal experience that a sewing machine can be a beautiful yet frustrating beast to work with.

I will be teaching a basic sewing machine use class at the newly opening Axis arts academy in Denver, Colorado in July. We'll be going over such basics as threading, to more advanced things like maintinance, and troubleshooting.

I will also be teaching a few other fabric craft oriented classes as well if that floats your boat.

i'm looking for an image of an antique-ish moon diagram or chart - kind of like an antique map, with lots of embellishment... my google image search hasn't really turned up what i'm looking for - have any of you seen an image like this in your internet travels that you can point me to? thanks!!!

So I was wondering...[this is for when I'm older and such] how do you buy a kiln and how much are they? Because I was Crafters-Coast-To-Coast and I'm really inspired when people make their own plates out of glass and I really would like a kiln. So I'm just wondering..is there somewhere you buy them..or do you have to buy them from a magazine or what? Does anyone on here have their own kiln? If so, wanna be my new best friend? Lol.

And other than that, I don't update much in here, because i don't have time to be creative. But I do wanna say I do read this community and you all are so inspiring and I love everything you make!! It's so fabalous.

Help?

How big are a twelve year old's head compared to his feet and hands?

I'm making a doll from fimo, but only it's head, feet and hands. The head is done and baked and 5 X 3,5 cm (2" x 1 1/2") without the neck, and I don't know how big to make the rest...

I got this image from Target.com, and I saw something similar at the store today, but in green, and a slightly different pattern. Anyway, it's basically a mesh with a daisy-like flower, and some sequins. My mother fell in love with it, but didn't want to spend the nearly $20 on it. I offered to make one, if it will come out for a little less.

Here is a link to the poncho: clicky clicky.
It says it's made of rayon.

I'm wondering:
a) what should I crochet it out of?
b) how do i crochet the sequins -- do I string them onto the yarn, or on a separate thread and crochet the two together?
(thanks everyone!)
c) is there a pattern somewhere for something like this?

Thanks so much. x0.

Alright... So for my friend's birthday i've got him a little plastic box that i'm filling with random boy stuff. He's a 24 year old guy and so far i've thought up condoms, cigarettes, a lighter, chocolate, a matchbox car, and a thing of AXE (plus some yoohoo on the side). I haven't known this guy very long so i don't know a tremendous amount about his likes or dislikes. Can anyone help me out with ideas? I'll post pics when i finish the box and decorate it nice and pretty.

lilian is terribly, tragically, and otherwise miserably in love. of course this would not be so horrible were she not in love with vincent price. who is, sadly, very many years older than her. and also dead. of course lilian is dead as well but this does little to appease her lovesick heart. for while lilian died 103 years before he did, she had the great misfortune to reach her deceasedhood at a mere eleven years old. she once wrote him a very pretty love letter but he only came by to pat her head and offer her a ghostly hard candy from his pocket. so she pines and pines and waits silently every single day for him to drift by and wishes very hard that she could only have been alive seven years longer.
