So I want to check out the book Vintage Knits, but I was wondering if anyone had tested it out, or would know if any of the patterns are cute?

(I'm just thinking about buying it online.)

Thank you.

I finally finished the cropped cardigan that I started a few weeks ago (altered quite a bit from this pattern). It took me awhile to finish it because I was sidetracked by other projects. I decided to not make the sleeves super long and left them cropped short instead. I added eyelets and some black ribbons to the bottoms of the sleeves as well. I rummaged through my collection of vintage/ antique buttons and found a really beautiful abalone shell button that I used for the closure on this sweater. Now, I am off to start a new project.

my friend and i made the dummies and the main thing that we learned from them was to have one person cut the tape and another to put the tape on the person.

please excuse my total disregard for make up. i think i sweat it all off.

i also have a question for you guys. (hidden in a picture post, im a sneaky little crafter!) i have just started working on a simplicity pattern and i chose the size by the measurements on the envelope. the measurements were dead on to mine, but once i got it all cut out and pinned together, it looks like a moo moo! the moo moo on my dummy ) my question is, how do you pick the right size? whats the deal w/ the measurements listed?!? gah! it all makes my brain hurt.

lily.

(video still one -- video still two)

lily is based on the girl from my icon clearly. well hopefully clearly. i am rather incrediably fond of the smashing pumpkins, and especially the 33 video. and that particular girl and her scenes are some of my very very favourite images ever. so of course...i made her a doll. for me. me! this is only worth noting because ive sold every other doll and its rather nice to keep one for myself for once.

her bodice is rather pain-in-the-ass-edly picked apart lace and the skirt is the wider bit of the original lace i deconstructed. all of which was tea stained to get the right colour.

Since I'm home from school now, I have a lot of time to be crafty when I'm not actively looking for jobs. Here are the results. Beware dialup users! I am on dialup and these took forever to upload.

Lots of stuff )

That's it! Thanks for being patient. :)

Somebody made a post a while ago about an *awesome* hard iPod case that they'd made.. and for the life of me, I can't find it! Any help?

I bought myself an iPod today, and definitely want the expensive bugger protected.

Thanks!

EDIT: Spent like 2 hours looking for it and finally found it. http://www.livejournal.com/community/craftgrrl/6064519.html#cutid1

For anybody who was looking as well. :)

my mom has been yelling at me to go outside, she says i've been spending too much time indoors making things. its not like i can go outside and bead, they would blow away! so i stopped beading, and went downstairs by a window and did a few sketches of some stuff i want to sew. "go outside lauren, its a nice day!" uhhh no, its 90 degrees outside. blah! its not like i'm making a big clutter either, most of my jewelry gets sold pretty quickly. i don't know why my mom has such a problem with it, i'm 18 years old, i'm a juinor in college. i don't do drugs, i don't sleep around, i don't do anything that's dangerous, why is she getting on my case for wanting to create things? do your parents give you crap about being in the house doing crafts?

I'm sure one of you crafty grrls here must know how this, so : What's the simplest and least expensive way to turn ordinary solid color cloth into something like this ?

Hello everyone! My internet connection was knocked out for almost three days. After I managed to uncurl myself from the fetal position, I was SO productive. I managed to clean my entire room, both my closets, my bathroom, my craft supplies, and do some sewing. I also watched obscene amounts of TV, but you know, we gotta waste time somewhere. Anyway, I just wanted to share my latest projects!

Purses ahead! )

[identity profile] littledebbi.livejournal.com

You think you've got problems? I've got more craft supplies than I know what to do with. My mom left us with an entire basement stacked full of fabric and boxes with very random things in 'em. I can't give or throw it away, so the only way for me to get rid of this stuff is to learn how to sew. So what I'm looking for are some spiffy ideas on what to do with all this CRAP!

here are some pics of the madness )

pillow talk

Jun. 9th, 2005 11:35 am
[identity profile] saraara.livejournal.com
so i'm making some pillows for my apartment. now i've made pillows before, and i stuffed them with the normal fluffy stuff you buy in a bag, i'm sure you know what i'm talking about. so my issue with this is that the pillows turn out kinda lumpy, and i constantly had to squish them around to fix the lumps. maybe i didn't use enough fluffy stuff, i've got no idea.

so basically i am wondering what any of you have used when making pillows. any secrets to making sure they keep their shape? i don't really want to buy already made pillows and use them, i'd rather stuff them myself. they're probably going to be somewhat small squares and rectangles (i.e. not standard pillow size).

thanks in advance :D

hello!

i'm brand new here :)

i'm hoping to get inspired and maybe get some ideas from all of you.

my boyfriend and i just bought our first house and we're trying to spend more time at home now (to save $ especially, since we are both impulse shoppers). i've gotten into scrapbooking a little (although right now it's mostly just a collection of random items). we have an extra room that i plan on using for craft stuff.

i'm wondering what all of you do for crafts, to give me ideas. i've read a lot but it seems to be the same projects.

i'm also looking for crafty home decoration ideas.

i look forward to being a part of this community!!

Today is my brother's 28th birthday... and I'm pretty broke. So I made him something that I hope he appreciates.

So here is the bag itself. I made it with black duck cloth, cuz that's what my sister bought me, and decided to use the contrasting, white, thread, because I think it looked cool.  I still need to add the snaps, strap and some other things...Along with what I hate most, trimming the thread! I also need to fix one of the corners, which some how got screwed up.  I figured out how to fix my boo-boo, and only have to hand sew the sides of the pocket on the back. So here it is... )

this was the inspiration: http://www.indygear.com/gear/bag.shtml

Thanks! Comments/suggestions appreciated!

I guess its crafty, but I cosplay, and have been putting off showing these costumes here ^^;
from Animazement 2004 and 2005 )
Well, that's all that I made the majority or all the pieces from scratch. I have other costumes made from store bought things and home made accessories, if you want to see them, just post and I'll post them ^_^;

so, just curious -- how many fellow queers are in this comm? i was dwelling on the whole "crafting as a feminine art" thing, and thinking about crafty boys, and then i started wondering if there were any butch women in here that engage in stereotypically femme crafts? i think i'm looking too deep here, trying to draw correlations between crafting and gender theory and whatnot. ?

My first "post" in here...:) I just discovered this community yesterday. I can crochet, I've just taught myself to knit (I'm in the process of a tote...pictures to come!)
I have a ton of old buttons, trims, zippers, fabric ect that were passed along to my mom. They had been her grandmother's (when my mom was a girl, her gmom made her dresses out of some of this fabric!).
Buttons! )
Yesterday, I took this bag that I bought for $2.50 at the local flea market.
Boring bag... )
and with a little bit of pink trim and some buttons...I came up with this:
I love pink and grey )
I was happy with how it came out.
I'm actually getting ready to try to sew a makeup bag. We'll see how that comes out, ha.

hmm, if you had a fat quarter of this fabric:

and a fat quarter of this fabric:

what would you make with it? i'm afraid of wasting them on something cheesy, because i love them and can't wait to use them...

Next time I bitch about the price of fabric at Spotlight or Lincraft, please feel free to remind me of the afternoon I spent 3 1/2 hours making a square foot of wool felt.

This was made in the traditional way, four layers of merino roving (or tops), soaped and rubbed, turned and repeated four times, then rolled in bamboo blinds several times on each of the edges.

I made mine with a pretty hand-dyed aquamarine and gave it a royal blue border. It's actually pretty square, but it was difficult to photograph.

I'll definitely be doing it again. This one is going to be a cushion front, I think. Next time, I want to make a hat. Not that I wear hats, but you know, it's craft. For now, I'm just glad I don't have to make my own clothing from fibre. And that I have a washing machine.

It was fun.

Plus some bath stuff )

I found these shell-like-beads, and was looking for any ideas of what i could do with them (ie: beading patterns with sead beads, etc) for either a bracelet or necklace- i think they'd be too heavy for earrings

[identity profile] rejectcarp.livejournal.com
i bought this very awesome maroon bikini at old navy yesterday for $24. not a bad deal, but i wanted one in another brighter color. so rather than spend another chunk of change, i decided it was time to plunge into my fabric stash to take care of a particular piece of yellow spandex and see what i could come up with. so far i've only gotten to sewing the top, but the bottoms are cut and ready to go to machine tomorrow.

Gallery Glass and other stained glass-effect paints are intended for glass... but they stick to basically anything smooth. Like an iBook.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

That's my laptop; I call it Yoshimi, after "Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots" by The Flaming Lips. The design on it is based on the insert from a Silverstein album. The heart is positioned over the Apple logo, which glows when the iBook is turned on. (The iPod belongs to a friend of mine, who crocheted a case for it.)

Once you've glass paints dry, you can peal off your painting, and stick it to something else that's smooth. So to make this, I printed the image I wanted, taped it to a flat pane of plexiglass, and traced it with glass paints, drawing the leading first, and then filling in the color. When it dried, I pealed it off and stuck it to my iBook. (The white plastic Apple uses on all their products theses days is perfect for glass paints. They stick to it very well, and the colors show up really nicely. Plus, the paint protects the surface from getting dinged or scratched, and it the texture makes it easier to grip.) After about a month the paint hardens enough that it doesn't want to peal off as easily, but it still comes off quickly if you use the edge of a spoon.

I've found I can do easily-removeable collages using glass paints. I lay down a layer of transparent glass paint, and then stick something in it, so the paint becomes the 'glue.' Then, when it's dry, I paint a second transparent coat on top, to give it all the same finish and to protect what I collaged. The collaged bits stay on pretty well, but peal off easily if you put a little effort into it, and they don't permanently effect the surface. I'm planning to collage text onto my laptop, and turn it into the panel of a comic.

I hunted the memories a bit, but my mouse is totally psycho and tabbing through all that is tiring after a while.

Anyway. What do you do with your fabric scraps, besides stuffing other things with them? I'm up to my ears in fabric scraps! I could make a quilt. I could make yet more little drawstring bags. And no, I do not have an iPod :'-(, although I could make iPod cozies to sell.

I should probably buy this book, which I think I saw in a thrift shop and foolishly left behind. Or this one.

Any ideas?

Hello everyone. There's going to be a yard sale in my neighborhood this weekend and I was just wondering what a reasonable price would be for a paper crane. They're easy to make so I was wondering if would be worth wile to make and sell some.

Here's an example of one

I didn't make that one, but they all look the same :)

I work at a clothing store that trys to be fashionable by selling lots of silly girly beaters with screen prints of dumb sayings on them. Recently however, they started selling new tanks and tees with pictures of random objects in random places, like flowers and panda bears. I love them, but do not wish to pay for such things, so of course I will begin to use my vast crafting skills and ridiculous amounts of free time to make my own. My question at the end of this tale being, what kind of random objects would you like to put on shirts? I'm trying to think of things that I haven't yet seen at work, but it's late and my mind is going nowhere. Any suggestions?

Does anyone know any good sites for hemp knots and designs that are a bit more challenging? I've got all the basic knots down, but I'm getting bored with those.

I'll post pics when I'm done because post only entries are boring.

Well, I thought that I would ask here, instead of the knitting community, as I know a few spinners exist here...
I am going to learn how to spin later on this summer for my Senior Project in school. Do you guys ahve any favorite roving suppliers? I think I will try out a few different types of roving (I already know I will have alpaca, from the farm I'm learning at <3)
I don't mind more expensive ones, for later on, not just this project, as I plan to keep this up ;D
Just places with a lot of color is all I'd like!

Thanks in advance, and have a nice day!
