It's been awhile since I've visited cause my laptop died and I've been trapped on a dinosaur. After getting iteas for about a hundred new projects I realized I need to finish the ones I've slated/started first. So I'm just gonna lay it out with the questions cause I'm leaving tomorrow afternoon for a few days, and hopefully soon I'll have pictures of said projects, along with about a million of those knitted kitties. My boyfriend is about ready to commit me cause I won't shut up about them :x

Anyway, I have a couple yards of white and magenta polar fleece. A lot more than what I needed for the intended project. Which is making bunny hats. I've searched around on the internet and in the memories for hat templates but they really don't seem to be the style I'm looking for. The style I'm thinking of has a flat top, hmmm it's hard to describe, but like the flat top stitched with another swath of fabric around the sides? I hope that sounds familiar. Anyway, if anyone has any tips on a template for that style of hat it'd be so rad. Cause the boy thinks his favorite bunny should have ears.

The other project is a present for said boy, I'm making him a cow pillow (he moos at me a lot.) and I'm planning on embroidering the details on to the cow. Going through the memories someone mentioned to be careful about the type of cloth you use for embroidering because if it's too tight it can be hell to embroider with, does anyone have any experience embroidering with polar fleece? I just want it to be one of those "I love you so much you dumb boy" touches and I'm hoping it will be easy to do so.

thanks so much, and if things work well, you'll be graced with the holy trinity of bunnies, kitties and cows.

Oh oh oh

I thought that since I ask about a million questions a day, that I should post something non-question.

Something easy. )
[identity profile] squid-ink.livejournal.com
just a thought to do something nice for a kid.

There's an organization called Make a Child Smile which features three children every month with severely debilitating conditions. This month we have :

Katie, who is 9 and has cancer, wrote a book about surgery so that other kids like her could learn more about it and not be afraid. She likes Disney princesses and playing school and make-believe with her little sisters.

Brandon, who is 4, also has cancer. He likes trains, puzzles, books, Legos, dinosaurs, Bible stories, stickers and fishing.

Three-year-old Megan was born with all sorts of problems and no one expected her to live through them all, but she keeps amazing her family and the doctors. Now, she's had a heart transplant, and is dealing with all the aftermath.

If you can, and haven't done it yet, I strongly urge you to pick at least one of these children, write them a cheery card, and maybe send them a little something.. and I know all you crafty people love a challenge like making a kid smile!

This is a really simple thing, and yet it really seems to brighten up otherwise difficult lives for some of these children.

There are mailing addresses for each kid so you can send a 'cheer me up' to them .. and they change on a monthly basis...

*if this is inappropriate pls feel free to delete. I just wanted to spread the word.. I just found this on my friends list today..

Gakked from adamant_turtle, not a member of this community (I don't think anyway)...but a swell gal nonetheless.

Even though I've been sewing for a while now, zippers continue to be my mortal enemy. More cursing and seamripping has happened in my studio than I care to say. I actually just sewed a zipper in quite well on the first try, but continue to experience one of my major problems. And so I pose this question:

When you install a zipper, how do you keep the zipper foot from riding up on the zipper pull and creating an unsightly "bump" or curve in your stitching?

If someone can help me with this, I swear it will be like a light shining down from the heavens.

And I can't believe I haven't thought to ask you all before - Lord knows I've been in this group long enough!

i made a corset for my sister. It's made of a sparkly sheer fabric sewn on a tightwoven black cotton. I drafted the pattern myself. It took me a while but i'm very pleased with the result

anyone ever make these before?
my grandmother used to make these with me when i was a weeee lass in church as i slumped in the pew trying to stay quiet during the fire and brimstone preaching services of her little, southern baptist chapel and i can tell you right now that no matter how many times you try, you'll never make a hankie doll as well as your grandma could, but it's a good distraction.

I was at the Christmas Tree Shop yesterday and they had these cool black and white photo tray holders that were marked down to .89 cents. So I bought the two that were not broken and decided to refurbish them a tid bit! I used acrylic paint to paint on the glass as well as the wood, just "Folk Art" paint I had lying around the hosue! Before and afer pictures follow.

inspired by the luggage tag post earlier, i went further on my vinyl-sewing adventure and made these luggage tags.

obviously i still need a little work. i wanted to try using vegetable oil to keep it from sticking, but i don't have any right now. but i'm excited because they match my luggage, which is red with black trim.

the back is frosted plastic that i cut out of a translucent shipping envelope, and the loop is ribbon.

I have a feeling that I know the answer to this question, but I'm looking for verification:

Will felt colors run if they get wet? I want to do some homemade felt appliques on a plain t-shirt, but I feel like they won't be washable. In which case, would using a home dry cleaning kit (such as Dryel) probably work fine?

Thanks!

Oh I love it so much.

Well, my bat blanket is done!

It's really not as lopsided as it looks, I just didn't lay it straight when I took the picture, and that little black thread looking thing on the tip of one of the wing things isn't really a misplaced stitch or anything. I was still weaving in ends and that one hadn't been woven in yet.

** I wrote an email to DC comics before I made this and asked if since I was making it for personal use only (for my son) and had purchased the comic book that I made the logo from if it was ok. They said since it was personal use only that it would be ok ... is this usually the standard for stuff like this or does it vary from place to place?

Hi ladies...

I've got an interior designer friend who just gave me a full trash bag of leftover fabrics! They are mostly upholstery fabrics in combinations of cotton and poly. Most of them are at least a foot square, but some of them are several feet long. Besides quilting (which is my primary plan for them), does anyone have any brilliant ideas for other things I could do with them?

Want to see a sampling of them? )

I bought these random, father's day coasters (the father's day theme at target was golf, because we all know EVERY father plays and likes golf, duh!) made of astro turf on clearance at target....

it was a set of 6 for 2.48...

you know you want to see what I did with them! )

hey grrls, wondering if anyone can give me assistance/advice with regards to sticking flat backed crystals to a veil comb? the comb is covered with the same fine net material of the veil so its really hard to get them to stick! I've tried fabric glue but they're just falling off. They done have any holes so they can't be stitched on... what to do?!

It was leftover scrap time! I used Lionbrand Microspun yarn (white).. then I ran out, so I continued with Red Hearts Brites in this hot pink color. I used this pattern to make the kerchief. :)

Help me decide whether to buy double pointed needles or circular needles to do my first knitting project in the round.

With circular needles I made the realization that if I'm going to do a decreasing pattern, like a hat, I'd need more than one length of circular needles to finish, right?

With double pointed needles, I wouldn't have that problem, but starting off, I can see myself getting confused on which needle goes next.

I bought the Clover brand circular needles today... but in ignorance got the 29" long ones. What the hell am I gonna make that's 29" long? Another con, I'm thinking.

Does this make sense? Do you guys have any other pros and cons for each type to help me decide? I know in the end it's a matter of preference, but I'd like to hear your guys' opinion.

tell me, is there such a thing as some kind of gel or something that you can "paint" on (control the shape of it easily and all of that) to a surface, then paint with whatever medium you choose, and then peel the gel off to find clean surface beneath it? You know, sort of like masking tape, only better because you don't have to rip lots of tiny pieces in order to mask what you want to mask.

does anyone know?

because that would be amazing.

I just bought my first sewing machine a few weeks ago, and haven't been using it much :/ but yesterday I was bored and decided to sew my first bag! I used some padding (?) in it with a lining as well, but I messed it up and the inside is rather wonky :/

ive been going through the memories and have gotten more ideas, so i'll probably be getting more stuff and sewing it then! <3
