i'm in the process of reconstructing some ugly old sandals. they used to be a beloved pair of leather sandals until i wore them through the rain and ruined the leather, then attempted to beautify them again in a delirious late-night crafting frenzy about a year ago, the disastrous result of which you can see in the linked photo...

anyway, i just dug these out of a box and thought i'd attempt some hardcore reconstruction. i saw that the straps were attached with some long-toothed staples, so i pried them out and now this is what i've got:

i plan to make new straps out of some pretty upholstery fabric samples i picked up at the interior design store and staple those on, and to give the rest of the shoe a fresh paint job to cover up some sad scuffs (all one, premeditated color this time). so my question is this: does anyone have suggestions for what kind of paint i should use? i'm pretty sure acrylic or craft paint would be a bad idea. or maybe not, as long as i used a kind of varnish? enamel? can someone recommend?

i checked the memories, and it appears that the community [livejournal.com profile] custokicks would have been the perfect place to ask this question, but it seems to no longer exist.

thanks in advance!

I seem to be having a lot of trouble with the search function on this community. About 50% of the time I don't turn up what I'm looking for and know I've seen.

What is the site that's like ebay for crafters? I'm looking for some soft, crafted ipod cases.

Thanks a lot.

Today, I started working at Lewiscraft. For those who don't know (and that wouldn't surprise me, since I think it's a small chain), it's a craft supply store.

I get to be surrounded by crafty things all day!

Not only that, but we get to make the sample scarves and stuff that show off what you can do with the yarns they sell. Once the store's done displaying them, we get to keep them. This means a great deal more crafting results from me! Woot!

I'm really excited about this job. To be surrounded by something I love to do . . . This is just one step away from my dream of opening a handmade items store!

Craft swap

So, June/July theme for [livejournal.com profile] theswap was "LOVE IS IN THE AIR/THE BIRDS AND BEES", to "make whatever, use whatever, be creative and have fun".
I got the survey of my swap partner ([livejournal.com profile] cool_it_yo - I didn't knew her lj user name until she received it), from our "swap manager", and the things I use to do this craft were that two of her favorite colors were black and red, that one of her hobbies was painting and her fav song was "Hopeless romantic", by the Bouncing Souls.

I made her a pencil/brush case.  )

I'm really into small coin purses right now. But it seems impossible to find new purse frames where I live (Gothenburg, Sweden). I wanted to try and make one anyway so I decided to have a go at removing one from an old coin purse that I bought second hand. It wasn't easy but here's the result... )

I've also finished a beaded bracelet that I've been working on, picture beyond the cut. )

Mom's Cane

This is my first post.
Mom's Cane
Mom had an old cane I bought back in the day (about 10 years ago) at good ol' K&B. The finish was coming off so she gave it to me to redo. So I used a power sander to take off most of the finish. It wouldn't fit in the hook (believe me I tried) so I had to hand sand that. Next I drew all over it in marker and wood burned the lines. After that I cleaned it with alcohol (To take off the marker and to allow the wood to "open" so it would suck up the paint really well). Then I painted it.

Next after the paint has dried over a few days I will touch up some things with the wood burner and then apply a clear varnish to it. Then it will get it's new cane tip and be good to go.

Hopefully soon I can get mom walking again so she can use it.

I woke up super early this morning with an idea I had to try... In about an hour, I had this! I cut the button/collar portion off of an old button-up lumberjack-style shirt, and attached it to a teshirt instead. I'm pretty happy with how it came out, considering it was about 4 in the morning;)

I need to paint a sign to be used indoors. The sign is unfinished light wood (basswood, actually). Previously all I have painted with is gouache. Should I use acrylic paint for this? Oils? Thanks.

i checked the faq and didn't see anything, so if i missed it, please point me in the right direction.

that being said, i'm having a problem decreasing. on one side, all of my sitches turn out perfect. however, the other side of my work looks very sloppy and stretched out. i want both sides nice! any suggestions?

thanks so much.
i promise i will post a picture of my beautiful red sweater once it's finished :)

edit: err, i forgot to say that i am knitting, and i did check the knitting faq. my problem is that i knit two together to decrease and then the left side of my work turns out all wonky. (the left side with the RS facing up)

getting paint off fabric? once it's dry, is there any way?

i made a perfectly stenciled lotus flower on a shirt, and while it was drying, one of the cats walked through it, leaving behind part of a footprint, but somehow not messing up the design. i want to be able to salvage it, because it worked so well.

edit: i used nail polish remover, and it came off, no problem. phew!

quick question, how do you dry your hand made paper? what have you found that works faster? my press method is taking too long, i need to get some cardstock made and dried (half of it is made already) post haste.

any suggestions are welcome.

so this isn't text only, here's my latest book i did for a mini journal trade, it is 4x6"

Done

jiggies* I'm done with the embroidery. And yes, I do have a picture, all be it a crappy, scanned one. But it's there ^_^. I can tell that this is my first time doing embroidery, I can see where I made mistakes, and where I'm trying to figure out how to do a stitch, but I'm still proud as all get out! Dustin gave me high praise indeed when I showed it to him. He stopped what he was doing, turned around and told me I'd done a great job and that it looked awesome! I'm so pleased ^_^. Now I want to do more, but have nothing to do it with lol. Karen (who taught me how to do this) used some special sort of iron on paper ink thingy. No clue what it is. But it ironed the pattern onto the cloth. Anyone know what it is and where I can get hold of some, or what I could use instead?? I'm not quite ready for freeforming just yet.
It was so much fun to do this. Like painting, but with thread instead of paint ^_^. I feel positively artistic *chuckles*.
Oh, anyone have any ideas on what to do with this now it's done??? It's in the middle of a piece of linnen. Can I somehow make it into a patch? Or something? I'm at a loss as to how to use it and show it off lol. I hate the idea of it just lying in my craft drawer again.

Greetings to everyone. I was hoping to get some help with my mom's sewing machine feet. I have just used the basic one that has always been attached, but was always curious about the other feet. I was wondering if you sewing machine-savvy ladies could help identify these mystery feet? I've tried to look up resources online, but it hasn't helped very much and the pictures aren't very detailed. I also checked the memories, and found a sewing resource site, but it only had pictures of the basic feet.

Alright, maybe I overlooked it in the memory/FAQ section but I am looking to find out how to make envelopes out of magazine paper. If anyone could show me or maybe even write it out. I have a hard time understanding written directions though and pictures would help. Thanks very much!!!

I'll be participating in my very first craft fair in a few months.
I'd love to get your advice on what to expect.

My main concerns are:

How much of a mark-up should I put on my stuff?
Should I stick to one or two types of items, or have a bigger assortment? (right now I've got about 5 different things i plan on making)
What sells well, what doesn't sell at all?

But any and all tips would be greatly appreicated.

Also, I was planning on giving out business cards with purchases in case people wanted to contact me about buying stuff later on, or about commissioning stuff. I wish I had a website to put on my card, but all I can put for now is my email address and phone number. Is that a good idea, or even worth it?

And so this isn't text only, here's one of the items I'm making for the fair:

Eventually, I'd like to start a business maybe selling the stuff that I
make. So I was sitting in my room yesterday with nothing to do and
thought I'd try and come up with a logo. This the drawing I made, and I
brought it to life a little...

Just a little taste of what I'm working on for my portfolio. My friend was screenprinting the same shirt shirt without the hammer and sickle so I decided to print mine with the symbol for a joke. There's also a big snail on the back which I'm going to doodle a huge mustache on. har har.

p.s. really irrelevant
but is anyone a size 7.5 in converse and has TUK mary janes?! what size are you?? I am ordering a pair but don't know what size I'd be as I usually just wear combat boots. This would be a tremendous help.

I took the idea straight from ReadyMade magazine, changed it just slightly, and am ever so proud!! I tried this about a year ago with a book that had super thin pages and learned from my mistake. I plan on making a few more as gifts!
