Today was a national holiday (no school and no work for moi...YAY!) so I got to make a few things. Very simple stuff but I like them all the same. Ah...beads = instant gratification. =)

On the subject of say, basic totes...what do YOU think makes for a professional result?

It's all relative I'm sure, but sometimes the totes I see that others rave over just don't have that "thing" and I don't know if it's just me. I just can't see what others see. They may have cute fabric, yes. They may have good sewing skills used. But they're missing that certain something that makes them look as if they're created by a true skilled professional.

So now my question is: what IS that thing? It doesn't even have to be a tote, per se. It could be really anything but I'm just using bags as an example :)

Discuss!

Last month I was rummaging around pottery barn and came across a pretty little decorative pillow case. I couldn't use it in my room, but I was in need of a new bag...

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

I folded the pillow case in half, and stitched along the sides. There was a zipper along the side so you could slip a pillow in. I didn’t close it up, so now it works as a hidden pocket where I put my money. For the strap, I braided some old hemp together (soaked it first, so it wasn’t sratchy). I plan on making the strap longer, because I like to have my bag strap go across my chest, rather than on my shoulder.

Pillow Case: $1.99
Thread: $0

My first yarn
My first yarn

The other night, I got out my drop spindle and some Australian merino tops and made my first yarn.

It's 19 metres (about 21 yards) of stripey fuscia and natural (black sheep coloured), five stripes of black, three of pink.

Is there anything that you can make with this little yarn? I don't actually knit or crochet, I just like fibre (I sometimes wet felt) but I have a grandmother who can make me something :)

Second update

At the Chinese food restaurant I work at, we're asked to wear nametags. I refuse just to sign my John Handcock and wear it, so I decorated it with supplies we had at work. These are post-it notes.

Hello

I was scanning the FAQs and I saw the light ideas, but I still have another question. I will have to buy some protective spray, but other than, does anyone have any do's/don'ts for making a lampshade?

I was thinking of just getting a plain little white one and decorating it somehow - paint, paper cutouts, ribbon/lace. Help?

Thank you!

-Katherine

Craft Revolution is teaming up with various members of the indie designer community to raise money to donate to the Red Cross Hurricane Relief Fund. Many designers are donating items to be sold, and all the proceeds will be donated to assist those devasted by Hurricane Katrina.

Please help out by taking a look at the available items (and making a purchase!). If you are crafty yourself and would like to donate an item for sale, please visit this site for more information. You can also donate money directly to Red Cross by clicking here. Thank you, and please spread the word.

This was posted over at Glitter but I wanted to spread the word. I'll be making some items to donate to the cause, as well.

"Now’s the time for the Indie Community to make a difference!"
http://craftrevolution.com/craftersunited.htm

Hurricane Katrina slammed into the Gulf Coast earlier this week with devastating effects, forcing hundreds of thousands out of their homes and causing at least 68 deaths, including 55 in Mississippi. Rescue efforts are currently under way, with many victims trapped on rooftops and in flooded communities. The area is experiencing a shortage of food, a lack of drinking water and no power to homes that are still standing. The devastation is unbelievable.

We at Craft Revolution have been watching the news coverage together (online) with heavy hearts. We know full-well the power of the indie community to come together to support one of our own in need. Now is the time to mobilize that power and reach out to the victims of this horrific storm.

We have approached Etsy.com with a plan to offer donated indie items for sale on their website. Etsy has offered us shop space (http://craftrevolution.etsy.com) and to help us promote the event by mentioning the event in their blog and featuring some of the items from the shop.

All proceeds will be donated to the Red Cross Hurricane Relief Fund, which is providing hot meals to victims and rescue workers, as well as providing other much needed assistance such as shelter, medical needs and even therapy for victims. Our initial goal is to raise $1,000.

With hopes of forming an unprecedented partnership across the entire indie design community, we’ve contacted the major shopping websites for help in promoting the event in their newsletters, blogs, and on their websites. Tanya Sharma of MyCicy.com has already agreed to work with us, as has Leah Kramer from Craftster.

Want to help?

Donate an item for sale! You just need to provide us with a good-quality photo, description, retail value and starting price for your item. We’ll post the item on Etsy in our special disaster relief shop. Your name and website will be mentioned in the listing. When the item sells, we’ll contact you with the name and address of the winning bidder to ship to.

We’re also asking for participating shops to send out a special newsletter to help spread the word to their customers.

Even if you can’t donate an item, please consider posting something about the event on your sites, in your newsletters, and in your blogs. The more we get the word out, the more we can help!

If you’d like to make a direct donation with paypal, you may send your contributions to donations@craftrevolution.com. Please also send any inquiries or offers of donations and help to that address.

I found this link in the memories

http://groups.msn.com/shinycraftypeople/seewhatimade.msnw?action=ShowPhoto&PhotoID=1206

And below it there was a link to the instructions on how to make it, but it didn't work. Does anybody know how to make these?? I thought I could figure it out on my own, but I wasn't too sure about the hinge part. Thanks!

I do hope this doesn't cross any lines with the community rules, I just thought it might be a neat idea.

I'm aware that you're not supposed to sell/buy/trade here, but I was just wondering if anybody has a good directory of sites that feature handmade items? I like to support fellow crafters if I feel the need to purchase something rather than make it (after all, there are many things I'm just not good at!).

Plus I also find that many handmade websites that do sell things give me great ideas to try new projects out for myself.

If this post in any way violates the posting policy, please delete it.

Is there a better/easier way to cut glass such as microscope slides without having to use a scoring tool?
[identity profile] wild-huntress.livejournal.com
I didn't find anything like this in the memories, so I'm hoping this question's ok. Anyway, I have about 18 or 20 pages of ads at the back of my college agenda. Ads for overpriced kids' clothing and random dentists don't interest me. I'd way rather do some funky college work, maybe with magazine clippings of Star Wars and Harry Potter and actors I like and other geeky, fangirly things. However, I only have a few pictures and am running out of magazines to cannibalize. Any tips on how to fill up 20 or so 7 " by 8.5" pages with very limited resources?

Cross posted a bit.

Windy City Scarf from Stitch 'n Bitch: The Knitter's Handbook

It's a really quick-to-knit keyhole scarf, knit in a k1p1 rib pattern. I used two skeins of Caron Simply Brites, one in that bright blue color, and the other in that neon green. I can't remember the actual names of the yarn colors. I started it maybe a day or so ago, and was able to knit up half in one day, and the other half over the course of two days (on and off knitting).

I needed something to stencil. I was going through my closet, and found some of the first stencils I ever made, and since I liked the stencil, but not the lack of cleanliness, my new project is to re-make some of my first stenciled shirts.

I recently discovered the awesomeness that is the blender pen and transfering to fabric! Thank you to thimble.ca's lovely tutorial

My only question is: once you transfer an image onto fabric, will it fade a lot after machine washing? I would like to make t-shirts but am uncertain about how long the images would last.

Since college is starting up again for me next week, I decided to make myself a new sketchbook. I used different types of paper, like lined, cardstock, graph, etc, so that way I could still use it for my sketches and mini paintings as well as take class notes for assignments and other things. The flower patch on the front was an iron on that I got out of a Sampler that I got a while back from Bookishquilts.

My mom is planning a "Fortune" party, complete with a psychic and a tarot reader. She's asked me to make the invitations but I am STUMPED. I've searched for ideas and am not finding anything neat or fun or remotely interesting. I thought, where can I find the neatest, craftiest people? OH! CRAFTGRRL! So, here I am.

I was thinking about printing invitations with a crystal ball on the front and something about "Your fortune lies within" then cutting out the round part of the ball and gluing a sparkly/translucent/iridescent paper there with the party details inside. But I don't know. It's just kinda meh.

It's not going to be a lot of invitations, so I'm not very worried about the work involved, but I want something unusual and fun. Eye-catching. Can anyone help? I promise to post pics of the finished product. Thank you all so much
