knit, purl?

I am very proud of my first real knitting project. I also learned how to purl recently, and this is the first time I have really used it.

see here! )

As you can see, I am doing knit 5, purl 2, across the row.
I have not been able to find a simple scarf pattern that just uses knit and pur, so I can't figure out how it is usually dont. My stripes go vertically. But are they usually done horizontally? This would mean that I would do, for example, three rows of knit, 3 rows of purl. Please let me know what you all have found to be best. Thanks!

Once I was going to make a dress from this super-mod, 1960s dress pattern. The dress had these pocket flaps that were supposed to be sewn to the from of the dress to look like pockets. I hate fake pockets, I cut out the flaps but did not sew them to the dress. Anyway, today I turned those leftover flaps into a tiny purse I plan on giving as a birthday gift.

After I made that, I made a necklace from the beads of a necklace that my mother got in 1970-sometime and later gave to me, which eventually broke. The silver tube and animal beads were from my mother's necklace. The original pattern was just four tubes and then an animal, with six tubes on each end of the necklace:

The other scarf I am doing is progressing nicely, despite the fact that it started to give me blisters on my left thumb (I'm a continental knitter, and it's that awful rough yarn). So as a nice change up, I bought the yarn for my mom's scarf today and a brand new pair of size 15 bamboo needles. I now understand why everyone goes into such raptures about bamboo needles. They are so soft! It's like knitting with silk!

some help?

hi everyone! i've got labor day all to myself, and i want to do some serious sewing. i just moved to chicago a week ago to major in fashion design at Columbia College, and i found out that there's a really big fashion week thing happening at the end of september. my professors were explaining how students could show their designs to the buyers at marshall fields and get professional feedback. so i've been doing my absolute best to sew some really cool things for that.

so after rabling, here's my question. i have one yard of light gold brocade silk (think buttercup yellow but more metallic) with goldfish embroidered on it in several different colors (green, blue, red), but those colors aren't too tacky or anything. its a really nice fabric. i have no clue what to do with it though. i only have one yard, and i really don't want to make a bag. does anyone have any suggestions? i know that all of you are really creative and i was hoping that someone would have the perfect idea. if you want to see the other stuff i've made to get an idea of what to suggest, my web site is www.chesterfaeri.deviantart.com. thanks for all of your help!

Heh. I RARELY post... Like, I bet it's 5 times ever. I mostly lurk on communities... and I've been a member of this one for, oh, over 1.5 years now. Since I joined LJ. But since college kept me busy, I didn't really have time to craft, or the resources, half the time.

But I graduated way back in December, And this is what I've done since then!Lotsa Pictures - dial-up be warned )

First attempt at a knotted necklace. Second, if the first "test" necklace before it counts. Not the neatest of knot-works, but it's decent enough...I think? Wax cord, dyed buri seed beads and oval mother of pearl shell pendant.

Fruity )

Six strand necklace with beads in different shapes and textures but all in one color...GREEN! Would do the Grinch proud, methinks. Made of glass crackle beads, seed beads, coco heishe, buri seed beads and very small clover sequins.

Hello all! I need some major help.

My house has a sunroom area that was added about twenty years after the actual house was built. When we moved in, we painted the cement floor yellow and put a table with chairs in it to make it like a porch area with walls.

However, we never used the room so it became filthy with bugs and dirt.

Yesterday, I decided that I would clean it out and make it into a sunroom. So today, I took everything out and mopped the disgusting dirty floor. I made a plan for the room on the La Z Boy website and showed it to my parents who were very happy with it.

Today, I ask if we can go to the furniture store to look at some sofas for the sunroom.

"No, we can't because buying new furniture is not at the top of the list."

So, I have to basically furnish a sunroom with $0. We do have a couch that we aren't using that I could re-upholster or put a slip cover on and I do have a beachy rug that I am using. I also have a green glass bowl full of sand and shells that we recieved at Bar Mitzfah that I will be using as a centerpiece for a coffee table.

If anybody could give me some ideas of how to decorate a room beach themed for very little money, it would be great. My parents would not be opposed to buying fabric for curtains but they would be opposed to buying curtains, so anything that I can do myself would be great. There is no room on the walls for putting up pictures and the like because there are large windows on every wall.

Some of my ideas were:
-Knit an afghan or blanket in yellow/green/blue
-Put seashells from our vacations all along the window ledges
-Put a slipcover/reuploster the couch - How do I do this?

Thanks!

hello my lovely crafty ones!
im in need of some ideas.

I've got these really cute wooden clothespins that I have the urge to use to make something with. Any ideas? I've thought about making little people out of them...but other ideas would be very appreciated!

This is the result of one of those ideas that seems brilliant at 2 am. I was going to make a little mobile for my room out of sculpty clay llama busts that are each painted with something I like/an aspect of my personality. They'd all be strung from the edge of a record.

This one combines my obsession with green and my nerdiness, by the way. And if you were wondering why llamas, well, they're my favorite animal. Hehe.

I still might do that, but this took so insanely long to make and paint that I'm a bit put off sculpty clay for a while.

I also decided that if I was ever going to make a mobile this one would be a bit too small, anyway. It's around 3" tall.

i'm making quite a few engagement party invitations.  in the style of wanted posters! :D
how would i go about making them look aged? i know tea bags...but if i print the text out, won't the liquid smear the ink? do you think it'd help to print the text out on light yellow paper first?...or should i just use white?

Hello All,

I'm new to this community and just wanted to share my first projects:

NOTE: This is the Cherry Tote bag I made awhile back.

NOTE: I accidentally sewed the Strawberry Shortcake fabric upside down. I was soooo bummed that I did that but I still think it came out cute. I ran out of fabric to make a new one so I'll have to buy some more. Also, to make the bag a little bit more sturdy I need to add some interfacing for it.
I'm still going to use it since I don't want to waste it. Do you think it looks that bad sewn upside down?

i don't know if decorating a dorm floor is considered terribly crafty, so if this is deemed inappropriate, please feel free to delete..

my friend matt is entering his third year as a RA at wright state university and this year we helped him come up with possibly the best floor theme ever... george orwell's 1984.

DOUBLEPLUSGOOD. )

unfortulately, it seems that 1984 goes widely unread these days, since most of matt's residents seem to have no idea what any of this stuff is from, and often the comment "what's with all this big brother stuff?" is heard while kids go walking down the halls. oh well, i know i sure as heck am enjoying it a lot.

no school today, so i got out the sewing machine and some fabric and went to town already.

i used some more of the leftover fabric from my school bag and some fabric i bought at joann's with my 10% off labor day coupon (labor day treats me very well) to create a lovely reversible tote bag that can carry my entire life in. yeah. i love large bags.

(a close up of the two fabrics.)

plus three )

i'm probably going to head back to the machine today, so expect a few more posts in the next few days. :D

thanks for looking! ♥ jenny

I've been neglecting my jewelry making lately for yarn. I know..I know..
But the other night I was at the craft store and they had these mini bead kits on sale, so I grabbed one.
I made up the three bracelets when I got home and remembered how much I loved making jewelry. Luckily I have neough beads to feed that addiction...lol

So here are the bracelets I made.
I tried scanning them and the scans didn't turn out too well, so I took pictures of them. Forgive the fuzziness in them. All the beads are glass except for the metal flowers (obviously)

I have a ton of costume and vintage jewelry that's really old and dirty, which I plan on recycling and making into other pieces. It's mostly necklaces, earrings and brooches that's I'd be working with. None of it is 'real'; it's mostly lucite, plastic, stainless steal and such. When I touch them my fingers feel all gritty and grimy, so they definately need a good cleaning.

Any ideas on how to go about cleaning them without ruining the jewelry? Soap and water? Alcohol?

Does anyone know what the hat Common is wearing in this photo is called?

I figured someone here might know, because it seems to be knitted. I can't knit, but I like the style and want to get one for my boyfriend.

A full moon on a dark night,

And the road downhill all the way to your door.

I created these moon faces out of clay and wasn't sure what I wanted to do with them so I decided to make them into pendants. These are my first wire wrapped pendants and I think they turned out pretty darned good :) Also the faces glow in the dark which is totally cool.

Here is a picture of the backs as well as a few more faces I have laying around. It is amazing to me the different personalities each one has!

Just so you girls know, there's a 50% off coupon for Michael's that can be used today for any regular priced item.  It should be in your Sunday paper (if you get one).  I used my coupon to load up on swarovski crystals.  With my lovely new crystals, I made the necklace behind the cut.

I finally broke out the button maker this week so instead of doing APUSH homework today, I watched Igby Goes Down and made buttons. I'm thinking about selling these on my site but have no idea where to advertise them. Suggestions? I normally wouldn't sell small things like this but they're just so addicting to make and my friends and I simply can't wear all of them!!

I finally figured out why my buttons were fucking up. I had this crimp die in that was specialized to make the buttons into magnets. Woops! All is solved.

These were all made from magazine clippings.

Oh, and before I forget, I have a burning question for you all! Every time I try to crochet anything, it turns out all...TWISTY. I'm chaining one at the end of each row, that's right, right? I think it's a tension issue but I have no idea how to fix it. (I'm more of a knitter than a crocheter..) Any advice?
