Impromptu trinkets
Feb. 23rd, 2006 01:38 amI got bored this afternoon and my roommate and I went a little earring crazy. And terrible photos strike again. I really won't care too much about the photos being superb until I get more hits, I guess. Ah well. I like these cause they're not too much.

Crafting innovation from India
Feb. 23rd, 2006 09:38 amHi all--
This isn't a craft post per se but I just wanted to share with you all an article from the BBC..
Couple turn waste bags into fashion
The bags are gathered from waste dumps in Delhi
A couple in India have found a solution to the problem of plastic bags littering the streets of the country's capital, Delhi - by turning them into fashionable handbags.
Anita and Shaleb Ahuja employ people in the slum areas of the city to collect the bags, which are a major problem throughout the country - often ending up polluting the environment, littering streets and blocking drains.
The discarded bags are washed and sorted before being turned into plastic sheets, which are then refashioned into the handbags.
"We were already into waste management, and we were getting a lot of plastic waste," Mrs Ahuja told BBC World Service's Outlook programme.
"That's when we decided to try and find a solution to this big problem."
( Their solution... )
[this bit is interesting...]
The Ahujas are now trying to convince the Indian Ministry of Culture to recognise what they are doing as a craft.
However, Mr Ahuja explained that they are not having much success.
"They say that if it's not 500 years old, it's not a craft," he said.
"It is absolutely frustrating."
Now, my thoughts:
-I know the idea of recycling plastic bags is nothing new--many of us have seen the links to knit bags out of old shopping bags, right?--but if you look at the original article, you'll see that they've made them look very clean and professional. In fact, I'm left wondering how they "molded" the plastic as suggested in the article.
-The whole attitude of "if it's not 500 years old, it's not a craft" thing kind of cracks me up, but I also sympathize with the frustration that this couple must have. Have many of you encountered that attitude? I haven't, but then again, a lot of the things I do are much more conventional. [I've thought about doing the whole "knit yourself a large reusuable shopping bag out of old shopping bags" thing, though, and may do that after I finish my boyfriend's nana's shawl.]
I've never really posted on here that much, but I'll be getting a digital camera soon and I'll share in the fun when I do. :)
Edit:
Here's other articles about the organization:

-http://www.hcilondon.net/cgi-bin/printnews.pl?NewsCode=2596 [the press release mentions that there is a German design who is also looking to create jewelry from the leftover plastic that is created during the bag creation]

Hi, this is kind of crafty (and not in the memories). I need to buy beeswax in sheets for my engineering class. But, I only need one sheet. I was wondering if you all had any suggestions on where I could buy it (retail). Would it be at Michael's or Joann's? Your help is appreciated!

Feb. 23rd, 2006 12:31 pmI'm BORED...
Or rather... I'm avoiding studying for the midterm I have in an hour. So I took pictures and am posting them!
These are four pieces to an afghan I'm working on. I have a few more at home, but I'm at school, so therefore cannot take pictures of them. The pattern is from an ANCIENT LOOKING Crochet pattern book of my mom's that I found in my garage, which, judging from the people in the pictures was mid to late 70's (the page with the copyright date is missing). It's called Woman's Day Crochet Showcase.
( Pictures here! )

I tried to find this in the memories section but I couldn't. I'm pretty sure I saw it in this community once before. Does anyone know where I can find instructions for one of those remote control holders that hang over the side of the couch?

Hanging Glass
Feb. 23rd, 2006 02:25 pmI would like to hang sheets of glass on the wall. Nothing huge, approximately 10" x 10". I'm wondering how I should go about doing it. Any suggestions?
I thought about drilling holes in the top corners, then stringing the holes or nailing through the holes. But I've never drilled glass before, or really anything for that matter... it kinda freaks me out. Plus I have a feeling that would require special tools that I don't have.
Thanks for any suggestions!!

Starting a Knitting/Crochet Club
Feb. 23rd, 2006 03:13 pmSo I wanted to start a knitting/crocheting club at school and make stuff for the needy/homeless in the area. I am planning to propose this idea to my Principal tomorrow when I see him during school. Due to it shortly being summer, I'm not sure what to have people make but I wanted to stick to basic square/rectangle patterns. Here is my project proposal that I have so far....
If any of you have any suggestions or advice, please help me because I'm very very nervous he'll say "heck no!" and want to make this the best I can, b/c this means A LOT to me.
p.s.-If this post is irrelevant I will delete it. let me know.

I hope that the edit worked, sorry about the mess-up. Let me know if it's still fudged. ( Read more... )
My First Attempts at Plushie Making
Feb. 23rd, 2006 04:01 pmThese were my first two attempts at making any sort of stuffed animal. I didnt use a pattern for either..I just kinda drew it up on paper and then made them. That's probably why they don't look very good lol. Anyway, the first is Joe the baby Octopus created by a friend of mine as a gift for her son. I have to make his father Oliver next. The second one is a plushie of the Anime character pig P-chan from Ranma 1/2. It was a gift for my boyfriend's birthday last year.
Joe:

( Oh the plushie horrors!! )

Feb. 23rd, 2006 06:29 pmHelp me, please!
Is there any stuffed animal pattern that will help me make something that will eventually turn out like this:
?
Or maybe not a stuffed animal, any other thing... I thought of sculpey, but I was thinking of trying out other materials.
I guess my question is, if you had to represent this (or something close to this character) in 3D in any way, how would you go about it?
Thanks in advance!

Feb. 23rd, 2006 07:00 pmI always love the posts where crafters receive huge quantities of craft stuff for free, so when I received a huge Pretty Punch Kit complete with hundreds of colors of yarn including metallic and glitter yarns, and every accessory you can think of, including two thick books full of iron on transfer designs! I had to post it!
Its a fast, easy, fool-proof way to embroider and make professional looking patches.
Its called the Pretty Punch and it creates almost a miniature latch-hook.
( a few pictures of what I'm talking about... )

It's sort of crafty...computer wise
Feb. 23rd, 2006 07:44 pmWhile I was at Michael's yesterday, I found HOLOGRAPHIC CONTACT PAPER.
So now, my computer is now sporting a brand new look:

( Strike a pose, Marge )
You can't see it because of the crappy webcam shot, but it's got some dings already. It's not perfect, because I got the contact sheets instead of the roll...but considering it's going to take a moderate amount of wear, I'm really not that worried. It's sparkly, and that's all I care about. Now I just want to sit and pet her pretty sparkly shell...

Okay, so I might just be late on the bandwagon here, but I just snorted and guffawed my way through this whole site: http://www.threadbared.com/
Warning: Before clicking link please make sure to have your tray tables up and beverages stowed. Covering your monitor in plastic wrap might not be a bad idea either. Trying to laugh quietly and instead blowing snot flecks out your nose does absolutely nothing for the surface of your monitor...

I swear her lap just winked at me!

School assignment where we had to create a mock mailer insert for a magazine. I did Martha stewart's kids magazine. It's a paper doll that you can actually make. I thought it would be a fun little thing for a kids magazine. Done in Illustrator.
Feel free to print it out and make some paperdolls for yourself!

Baby blanket idea
Feb. 23rd, 2006 11:50 pmHey how do you think a length of blankie, prolly fleece or flannel would look with applique’s sewn all over it. Maybe black with orange pumpkins for a Halloween theme, and pink with red hearts sewn all over it for a valentine day theme
