Here are some quilled shadow boxes I made for myself and a friend for Mother's Day (she's my daughter's Godmother). I found shadow boxes at the dollar store, painted them black, printed each child's full name and birth stats, quilled a design and voila! I haven't done paper quilling in about 8 years - good thing I never throw away anything crafty. LOL.

Screening == Stenciling's Platonic Idealized Form
A layman's essay on what the heck silk screening/screen printing/serigraphy is and how it works

To soothe your terror at this otherwise text-only post:
Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us
My first screen printed design, mostly aimed at my school's Classics Club and fellow suffering Latin scholars.
The text is pretty darn small (the bottle cap is there for scale), so I had to use photo-emulsion to get the details, therefore this was NOT printed with this tutorial.
The text across the top is what SPQR actually stands for: "The Senate and Roman People" and the text at the bottom is Italian for "these Romans are crazy" also conveniently abbreviated as SPQR.

The rest of my babbling... )

Aside: Any Classics fans/people who study Latin or Italian out there?
Do you think this design would have any demand if I printed them for people outside of my immediate friends?

I have a question about making your own necklaces and bracelets... I was wondering what type of material you would reccommend to string the beads? When i was younger we just used a fishing line type of thread but I want something that will last longer but still not too expensive. Any advice would be great! Thanks!

Name: Squirrel Mittens in Faire Isle
Pattern: Loosely based off of Squirrelly Swedish Mittens
Yarn: My own handspun in lace/sock
-3 skeins of tea dyed
-2 skeins natural brown
Needles: Size 0 (and not small enough, of so I knit really loose!)
The mittens )
Modifications: What did I NOT modify would be the better question. I have really narrow hands, so I made the gloves smaller by almost 20 sts. I reversed the chart for the second to account for the random chopping off of stitches (one whole squirrel). I also made the gloves slightly shorter by taking out one repeat of the main pattern and by doing double decreases to reach a point quicker (hence the tops look wonky). I also added an extra compassy type points that goes across the knuckles.

Next time: Next time I’ll make the thumb a bit narrower, and probably add some sort of braid as hello yarn did, and make them wider if I am making them for someone else.

Other Notes: I chose this pattern since I wanted something very simple to go with the tea and natural browns, and I wanted it to have a very organic feel to the mittens, so I needed a pattern that would fit with the yarn that was spun up thick and thin. I used about 125 yards of the tea dyed (the main color, 3 skeins), and just over 100 yards of the brown.

Does anybody know an alternative for normal fabric dye that I could use on a cotton shirt? I just need to cover a small area in yellow and orange, but getting two whole boxes of dye would just be unnecessary. Food coloring? Jell-O? Kool Aid? Suggestions please?

As the surreal landscape where Jedi Knight Aayla Secura bravely fought for the last time in Revenge of the Sith, Felucia is shown as a planet full of weird fungal lifeforms and gigantic, colorful plants. Many of the plants populating Felucia are partially or completely translucent, so when the sunlight hits their blooms the colors give off a beautiful glow. Now you can make your own unique plantlife with this craft project on Faux Felucia Flowers.

The cool part of creating these fake flowers is that you can make them from almost any material like craft tissue paper, felt, fabric, colorful shopping bags, origami paper, and so on. For big, lush flower blooms use brightly-colored plastic shopping bags. For smaller, denser flowers try using felt. And for fluffy and light blossoms use craft tissue paper.

Check out the instructions here:

I've been spinning up a storm lately, here are some the

And what you've all been waiting for, the free handspun...

This is 84m or 92 yards, made for Lollygirl's Project Spectrum, of hand-dyed, hand-spun merino sliver, ranging in colour from a dark, swampy green to a bright, springy lime green with a splash of yellow and purple for good measure.

How do you get it? Head on over to my blog and leave a comment. You will get two entries into the draw if you leave a joke as your comment.

I hope this is ok to post here. X-posted just a wee bit.

hello super crafty people. i was hoping maybe you could help me out of a bit of a jam. i'm making a shirt for my friend, and i used fabric paint, and it looked fine in the bottle, but once it dried it was waaaay too sparkly (my friend is a dude...). so i need to figure out some way to kinda hide the sparkle. i don't really want to go over it with a different paint because i'm worried it'll just get too thick and crust off faster. but i guess if that's the only way i can try. so does anyone know of any alternatives?
a pic of the sparklyness )

Thanks!

Beading

I wasn't planning on doing any beading but my very generous mother-in-law gave me this beading stuff she had laying around the house. Now I am hooked and I am going to have to buy some beading supplies for myself.

If you are ordering woven labels, order from:

http://www.lusciouslabels.com/

The woman who does the labels took a little while to answer my email (about a week) because she had been on vacation and her orders got piled up. But she contacted me tonight to let me know how much it would cost and was really helpful and informative! She helped me fix my image so there was more of a seam allowance.

I planned on ordering from http://clothinglabels4u.com/ and it was going to be 270 (not including shipping) for 500 labels! I need 5 colors including the background for my labels, and lucsious labels is doing 500 for 185. That is a LOT cheaper! And you only have to pay half down. You have to pay all down for the other company.

So basically, of the other two places I planned on ordering from, this is the cheapest! I originally planned on ordering from http://www.namemaker.com/ and their minimum was 1000 and my last quote was around 400 dollars for 2 colors.

Hey all,

Just made these wine charms as a wedding gift for some friends getting married in June. They are all lariat-style with semi-precious stones, on beading thread. I put them around a pretty tree branch as gift wrapping, and also to show how they work :)

that's what i love about these high school girls, man. i get older, and they stay the same age... )

Here's my take on a sari skirt:

I still need to hem the cut edge so it doesn't fray. It was a bolt end from Wal-Mart (only place to buy fabric other than quilting fabric here) so I only have to hem one side too. :-)

It is wrapped leaving about a foot loose during the first wrapping, then tying that to the final end if that makes any sense. It is very secure, I just walked a couple miles in it to the store and back, although a bit restricting to walk in. Have to look into other wrapping methods.

Just an idea for anyone looking for something super easy and light for summer!

So I got a bunch of garbage CDs from work - like about 150 of them. So of course, they're meant for crafty purposes!

I now have a new wall piece-
The pictures are crappy - my crappy digicam (no better - possibly worse than a camera phone) and I had all the lamps on but it's still dark - either way, you get some sort of idea of the shinyness...

I'm not putting it on my pc, I'm putting it on my wall! )

I used a total of 49 for it, and still have a bunch left. I bought some fishing line, I think I might try and make a curtain too. My roomie had a bunch of artwork ideas too...

lately i've been doing a lot of mixed media collaging, and generally, if i want words, i use my own (being that i am a freelance writer) but i thought i should ask... is it a violation of copyright if i use, say, a quote from a book or song in a piece of art and then sell it?

logically, it seems like it would be, but i thought i'd check. thanks!

Recently I have acame across [livejournal.com profile] gasouthard on her bunnies project on The Bunny Project and that got me excited in making my own bunies. However I know nothing about sewing as I have not touched any needle and thread after my Home Economics in my High School. I have bought all the materials needed to start this project but still faced the following problem. I hope some kind souls are there can enlighten me:-

1. The pattern comes in a large sheet as there are 3 kinds of plush toy pattern on it. Should I cut out the patterns which I need for easier handling?

2. I have bought the Tracing Carbon Paper (it comes in yellow and white) and the fabric which I have purchased is those soft fur kinda fabric which on the wrong side feels quite smooth. I tried to transfer the image using the 'wheeler' (if that's what you call) but nothing will appear on the wrong side of the fabric. Is there any way which I can do without much sweat?

3. Should I trace out all the lines on the pattern if I manage to figure out how to use the tracing carbon paper?

I have been meddling with the tracing out of pattern the whole afternoon but can't seem to get it done. The pattern sheet is getting thinner as I keep using the 'wheeler' to go over the pattern again and again. What should i do? I would never get the bunnies make in time to present to my friend as her baby shower's gift. Any help will be much appreciated.

Attention jewelry sellers!

I was looking for a site that sells display items for jewelry (busts, stands, etc) and this site has GREAT specials. There's only a handful of items on sale, but they're things you can actually use. Thought I'd pass the link along to anyone interested :)
