Help! (Light fixture)
Aug. 7th, 2006 02:12 amhi everyone!
it's been quite awhile since I posted here last, but I am in need of an idea!!
I have the UGLIEST light fixture on the ceiling of my new apartment.... I've been trying to come up with a way to make a sweet light fixture very cheaply.
I looked in the FAQ and there didn't seem to be anything there...
Any suggestions?! I don't really have a preference of material, but something that can take a 60watt bulb.
Thanks!!
Oh, and I'll post pics later of some stuff I've been working on! =)

Aug. 7th, 2006 08:13 amHello crafty geniuses!
Two questions: fabric painting and homemade greeting cards -
1 - I painted my black suitcase last night and the paint is still tacky this morning - the first coat was fabric paint, and the second was two parts textile medium and one part craft paint, just like the label said Will it eventually dry? If it doesn't dry, what do I do?
2 - I had a gift idea: Use 3-4 coordinating papers to create a packet of greeting cards and give them as a set - sort of an emergency kit for last minute card needs. So besides "happy birthday" and "thank you" what are some other sentiments I could include? I'm thinking eight in a set would be perfect, but maybe I can do 2 each of 4 sentiments???
I promise to post the suitcase soon.

Here's this month's soap, shipped out last week. The "Rainforest" blend that I did was a hemp-type fo (green and leafy), plus some Osmanthus and some geranium oil.

OMG text-only post incoming
I am hoping someone can help me out! A friend's been making jewelry and other cool shtuff out of polymer clay and she's been using the most awesome paints: (Jacquard Lumiere is what I'm looking at).
I want to try them out, but apparently they're only carried in certain stores (my friend is lucky enough to have a store near her), and I'd have to drive about an hour and a half to get to the one closest to me. And Dick Blick charges $8 shipping for a $10 item that'd take a week to get to me (urgh ripoff).
Has anyone seen these paints in well-known/widespread crafts stores? Or do you have a recommendation for a cheaper place to buy the durn things online? I'd really like to try that starter pack but I don't want to pay so much for such slow shipping. If all else fails, I'll ask my friend to look at her crafts store for me, but I'd rather not send her to do extra running if I can help it.
Even if you haven't heard of these paints before, let me know what your favorite online crafts store is! Maybe some people here can find a few new stores to spend precious moneys at.

Ceramics question
Aug. 7th, 2006 03:42 pmso, he's my problem...
i bought these ceramic skull tea light holders a while back for crazy cheap. I've got about 30 of them. I've sanded and painted 6 so far and they turned out really awesome (gave them to a friend for a wedding gift and she looooved em)
but my problem is... the baked on ceramic clear coating is a BITCH to sand off. after sanding away at 6 of them my Dremil sanding bits were toast. This coating is insanely hard! So I was wondering if there's any sort of chemical stripper that I might be able to use to remove it instead of having to spend 45 mins minimum sanding each candle holder. I'd end up going through a dozen sanding bits to get all 30 of them done! It'd be great if I could drop em in a bucket of some toxic junk and pick em out all stripped and ready to be painted.
my brother offered up some stripper he used on his car and it did nothing at all. it seems like battery acid wouldn't even tarnish this stuff!
any tips? PLEASE!

Aug. 7th, 2006 06:07 pmI've found a pretty big supplier of vintage fabrics (anything from 1950's onwards) for really cheap (I got a huge bag full for £7) but they smell really really bad. They've been sat in an old building for at least 10 years. They obviously need washing but I'm a little nervous in case they've started to rot while they've been in the shop. Any hints?
Edit: I washed them on a wool cycle and hung them to dry on the line. They all survived and smell much nicer now :)

Graduation
Aug. 7th, 2006 06:08 pmI made this for my roommate’s dog tonight. LOL Yes, I know it’s lame. But I think it’s funny.
Chloe (the puppy) is about to graduate from puppy school. So to amuse me, and annoy her momma, I made her this:

XD
( Yes it's a fake dog. Chloe isnt here right now (my roomie is at home for the summer) so its stuffed one. Here's Chloe! lol

I'm throwing a Mad Hatter's Tea Party in a couple of weeks time and I'm having terrible trouble finding my bf an inexpensive Top Hat for his costume.
Is there a tutorial for hat making out there?

![]() | knitted dishcloth using this ridiculous colorful/tacky kitchen cotton i bought a while ago. lace pattern is kinda messed up at the top but um, it gives it character? |

Stencil help
Aug. 7th, 2006 08:42 pmSorry for a quick text-only, but I'm really stuck. I tried using the cheap stenciling tutorial that has been posted here several times (embroidery hoop, nylons/tulle) However, when I tested it, the paint went right through the Mod Podge. What went wrong?
Is there a specific type of Mod Podge?
Did I stretch the nylons too wide?

Aug. 7th, 2006 09:24 pmSo, I wanted to make some cool thumbtacks to put on my bulletin board. I'm going to do scrabble tiles, dice, and bottle caps but what other random stuff would look cool as thumbtacks?

I joined this community about a month ago but haven't posted anything...yet. I just posted pictures of everything I've made this summer. It's in my journal (http://broken-soul6286.livejournal.com/2006/08/07/). I kept the entry public just for you guys :)
