I made this doll from lovely calico the other day. I wasn't really thinking about what I was going to make, I just started messing around and it all fell into place. I guess most of the art/ stuffed toys I like are very obviously handmade and have a folky feel so that's kind of what I was going for. I showed it to one girl who said 'But you can see where you've sewn up the holes!' and I was like... c'mon, thats the point, thats why I used black thread, get it together lady! But in a politer way. Anyhow here he is.

Motorcycle Tool Case?
Oct. 3rd, 2007 10:13 amHi everyone -- can you believe it's already October and time to start thinking about Christmas? Gah.
Ok, so my husband drives a vintage Vespa. We've been really tight on money over the last couple years, and a week before our wedding (because that's not a stressful time already at all) his got stolen. We got it back, but the kids who had stolen it seized the engine and stole/trashed the stuff that he had inside. Well, we finally have the cash to get it fixed, and so that's in the process.
Ok, onto the crafty part. One of the things that was stolen/trashed was a sewn case that held ratchets or wrenches or something along those lines. It's been a couple years so I can't remember the specifics. It was essentially one of those pencil/knitting needle/paintbrush cases that rolls up onto itself and ties, except bigger. I can figure out how to make it easily enough but I'm wondering if anyone has experience in making anything similar and can offer suggestion on what sort of fabric to use?
My vague memory wants to tell me that it was leather (like the softer, kinda suede-feeling type), which makes sense I guess, as that's durable and whatnot. Since I won't need a huge amount to make this (although I will be making two), price isn't too much of an issue. So would you go for leather if you were making something like this, knowing it will get thrown into a greasy wheel-well-trunk, covered in dirt and oil, rain etc? What do YOU think is the most durable-and-also-easy-to-find-and-sew fabric for something like this? If I do end up going with leather, where do I get that? I don't remember ever seeing leather at Joann's.
Thanks in advance!!

Regency Day Dress
Oct. 3rd, 2007 01:59 pmI asked for the Sense and Sensibility Regency Gown Pattern (the one at the very top) for my birthday, and got it! Five days after it arrived, I hosted a dress-up tea party for a few friends, so I sewed like a madwoman to get it done to wear then. I made it! Hand-stitched button loops, extra trim, and all.
( Pictures )
I have some brown calico printed with tiny pink rosebuds that I want to make another gown out of, but with long sleeves. However, all the pictures on the website show either the short sleeves, or short sleeves with attached undersleeves. Does anyone know if the regular long sleeve pattern piece will be all poof-tastic like the short sleeve? Because I want something more like what Lizzie Bennet wears here in the new Pride and Prejudice; just a regular long sleeve. If the pattern piece in the S&S pattern is really poofy up top, how would I go about modifying it to be less so?
Thanks for looking and thanks in advance of any advice!

Framed Name
Oct. 3rd, 2007 02:11 pmHmm. I don't *think* I've posted about this project before, but if I have, I apologize for double posting. It's one of those things that has dragged on forever, but I FINALLY got this gift in the mail, so it's officially done.

A little disclaimer, I was an idiot and didn't photograph it when it was done, the picture above I put together with a photo of the frame (IKEA- Ribba) and pasted the letter photographs onto it.
My friend has a lot of B/W photography in her decorating, so I thought this would fit right in. It was fun finding the letters to photograph, but frustrating as well, as I'm so very picky, and decided if two of three letters were with vines, then the third must be as well. I actually have many other versions of the letters in different discovered forms.
( Close up of Photo Letters )
I'd also like to point out, you can buy something very similar at:
http://www.createsticksandstones.com/
BUT, this only cost me $10 for the frame, $.30 per picture (plus $1 shipping the photos- I use Winkflash).

pot holders
Oct. 3rd, 2007 04:01 pmwho remembers making pot holders with a plastic/metal loom and sock tops (is that what they where!?)

i want to do this but using old t-shirts! i have a problem when they are still loops (the t shirt) they are huge! i don't want to cut them and have to tie them (like they way some people use plastic bags for knitting)
how should i make smaller loops with out having to tie them?
should i cut them and sew them?
also should i also try this http://lindamade.wordpress.com/2007/08/28/hot-stuff-patchwork-oven-mitts/
but do you think i could use quilt stuffing instead of the nonflammable stuff? (this is just a safety question)
thanks in advance!

Sims 2 Halloween costume
Oct. 3rd, 2007 05:57 pmHello, all. New here. I was thinking of being a sim for Halloween. I'd love to make a costume from scratch, like an outfit from the Nightlife expansion pack (there's blue anime-loooking dress that's pretty cool), but I think I'll have to use my own clothes. What I'm really focusing on is the green plumb bob (the green diamond thing above all the sim's heads). I had an idea to put a green glow stick inside it, to make it glow from within. the materials? I was thinking tissue paper and wire of some kind. I don't know how I'd suspend it above my head, but I'm working on it. If anybody has any ideas/tips, please let me know. Thanks!
Lining a wooden box
Oct. 3rd, 2007 10:02 pmI'm getting married next weekend and I bought a large wooden treasure chest to place the cards in. I've already got it stained and it's ready for poly, but I need/want to line it with fabric and I have no idea how to do that. Is there an easy no sew way?
