i have a dilemma and i was wondering if any of you would be able to help. i recently made a "going away" box for my boyfriend because we are going to be separated for about 10 months -- i'm going to spain for a semester and then, when i get back, he is going across the country for a religious retreat for 6 months. the box has all kinds of fun things to remind him of me/us inside of it but i'm not sure how to decorate it. the box is pretty big, probably about 8.5" by 7" by 4", and it's made out of wood. so far i have painted the entire thing a dark brown color, inside and out, but i'm not sure what else to do. the top of the box definitely needs something and i was thinking of carving a heart into it, but would that be too girly? i know it's something i would appreciate but not necessarily something that he would.

he's very much into music, so i've been considering trying to find appropriate song lyrics. i've also considered quotes from the Bible as well as the traditional irish traveler's blessing, but nothing feels right, so i'm hoping you girls have something better to suggest.

any ideas at all are much appreciated. thanks in advance!

hey crafty gals!
this is sally of The Raucous Tea Party, a zine and craft distro that i run. i do indeed love this community, and you all make amazing art. if anyone is interested in selling their crafty goodness on consignment, i am always looking for new stuff! i am especially interested in (but certainly not limited to) these things: stationary, journals, envelopes, buttons, magnets, knitted things, neat-o things that you sew, bags, hip looking dolls or stuffed animals, or anything else you can think of! if this sounds right up yer alley, check out the website!

thanks and hope all of your artsy endeavors are going well.

(actually I don't have a picture. Sorry.)

Hiya guys,
A few days ago I bought myself a pair of rainbow shoelaces to put on my shoes...the problem is, now that I've done that, they look amazingly ugly. My shoes are a pair of black vans with bright orange lettering all over them and the laces just clash and look garish and ugly on the shoes. But I want to do something with the laces. I really have no idea what, though. I was thinking that I could cut them up and glue them over all the orange on the shoes, but that sounds too messy and probably wouldn't work. So I need a few suggestions. Thanks. :)

i've got two december birthday parties to plan and i'm trying to go ahead and get all the ideas in my head. one will be spongebob related which i've gotten help from nickjr.com for. i could stand to use some more ideas though. the second is invader zim and i can't seem to find any ideas online. i can't even think uop anything in my head that doesn't involve boring old storbought things. if anybody has ideas on decorations, gift bag includes, food, etc. i'd be happy to hear them. thanks in advance!

[livejournal.com profile] princesscadhla pointed me to Genki Gang Hats and I though some of you wonderful peeps could use it as inspiration. They really go all out on their beanie hats!

Do any of you crafty girls know of something that would work like carbon paper for tracing a design onto a black surface? I have a desgin that i want to put on a t-shirt but i want the t-shirt to be black and still let me be able to see the lines so i can fill them in with paint.
[identity profile] chickxbassist.livejournal.com
howdy!

i checked the faq, so don't shoot me if this is there somewhere.

my college paper editorial board is going to make t-shirts to wear at the activities fair when we recruit new people for the staff. we're going to stencil t-shirts, and we were thinking about using spray paint.

my question is, will spray paint fade excessively upon washing? i want something very permanent, but i really like the spray paint look.

also, if i use spray paint, what material should i use to make the stencils?

thanks guys!

eyelets?

I've been eyeing these eyelets (har har har) for a couple weeks now. Today I finally bought them.

They were in the scrapbooking aisle, but I think I could use them for way better stuff than that.

I was thinking if I could get a piece of black leather somewhere, maybe I could make a wrist cuff out of it and add a row of white hearts on each side.

Or I thought about some wide black and white polka-dotted ribbon accented with the red hearts.

Here's the problem - Since I've only seen them with scrapbooking things, I don't know how to go about cutting holes in fabric for them and what types of fabric would be best. Any ideas? Or can these ONLY be used to scrapbooking? Help, por favor!

Awww maaaaaaaaaannnnnn.
I was all excited about posting some pics of my latest project- and now Speedis.com has decided to shut down for good. Does anyone know of any other free pic hosting sites? Any info would be greatly appreciated.
[identity profile] azaspeaks.livejournal.com
Thanks for all the suggestions on pic hosting sites- I really appreciate it!
Hopefully this works:
This is a dresser that I made for my daughter (she's due on Sunday)...
I painted it up and decopaged a life-sized paperdoll on the front...

2 reconstructions today!! these are my first successful surgeries :)
#1 was a very large t-shirt.. i turned it into a tank top, sewed all the edges and added lace on the bottom.. also used elastic on the left.

#2.. used 2 different tshirts.. the front of the gray had a big stain so i used another tshirt as the front part.

edit: here is the link to an album click here

My anniversary is coming up on the 17th and I had the brilliant idea of buying some customized wedding cake toppers- We didn't get a cake when we got married so we really missed out. I thought it would be really cool if I bought some from an artist that looked like us! Little did I know that art costs alot of money...apparently $800 worth...
Screw that.
Here's our wedding pic:

and here's my attempt:

I've still got to paint them- but I figured I'd take a pic before I ruin them!
The way I see it, I've saved myself an extrodinary amount of money and created a personal gift from the heart. Win/win situation!

I made an interesting find at a local dollar store. Loose, fake hair, and black at that! Its very soft and has a slight crimp to it. Definately worth $1. They are roughly 24 inches long folded, so about twice that unfolded.

Now the problem is since its all loose what can I do with it? How good would this looked attached to like a headband or something? Any help would be appriciated, I have never worked with fake hair before, but some stuff mentioend on here looked fun, and then finding it for $1, I thought I'd give it a try.

So help me, lol.

I have a pair of black Vans with a white stripe on either side of them. I didn't really like them, so I painted the white stripes with acrylic paints and modge-podged the hell out of them to seal the paint. Well, now the painted design is chipping. I don't really like the painted design anymore either (multi stripes on the insides, flowers on the outsides). Is there anyway to remove the modge-podge sealed paint?

I thought about sanding them, but that might destroy the shoes...

hello crafty girlies!

i have a bit of a query, i think it's a bit obscure/specific to be in the FAQ so here goes: my friend's 21st birthday is coming up, and i'd like to make her something really personal and quite classy really, but not too expensive (say in the region of £10-12, i guess that's about $15 or slightly more!) and i'd like it to involve unicorn decoration in some way, as she has a slight obsession with them! so any ideas would be muchly appreciated... i was wondering about decorating/painting wooden items in some way as i had so much fun painting this box...

have a look here if you're at all interested!! :) )

i know loads of people do decoupage and stuff with mod podge but coming from england i'm slightly clueless about all that, so any hints/tips would be great! sorry for the weirdness of the question, but it's my first post in this lovely community so be nice! ;)

thank ye!

OK here's the situation, can ya'll help?

I am traveling to Missouri on sunday night. Takin' a road trip. We're going to my friends parents farm. Her parents are quite the neatfreaks and would flip if they ever found out that I brought stamping or collage stuff into their house...
So my question to you is, what can I do to keep myself sane (craft wise) while I'm there. I'm going to bring crochet stuff but that'll get boring.
Thanks in advance.
