i was at the gap with my family today. while there, i saw this hat (part of the crazy stripe family). a square hat, pretty simple. i've crocheted them myself. and apparently, i'm not a hat person, especially since i cut my hair, but.. then this hat looked good on me. and i was not about to feed the gap money for something i could make myself.

i think the hat works well because of it's non-fitting shape. also, it was very thin and floppy (but still warm), and stretchy. i'm assuming from the look of the hat, it was done in a thin fingering/baby yarn. and perhaps i should use bigger knitting needles when re-creating the hat? (that's question #1 - should i use bigger needles? right now, i have #6's and #8's).

also.. i didn't think about this until just now, but the tassles -- how would i go about putting those on the corners? i'm assuming what i would do for the mainbody of the hat is start off with a ribbing (perhaps k3, p3) for a few rows, then do stockinette (or a p1, k1) for the mainbody of the hat and just make a big rectangle, then repeat the first few rows of the ribbing. then fold it in half and stitch up the sides. but the tassles, i'm really not sure how i would attach them -- and how to make them securely attached? any suggestions?

and thanks for taking the time to read/answer, btw. :)

I finished another Christmas present! Yay!

It's made out of polar fleece on the front and a light weight grey denim on the back.

Craftiness

Hey gang. Someone posted about decorated a box for a friend a while back and I thought I'd post pics of some memory boxes I made for two of my best friends a few years ago for Christmas.

memory boxes )

I also just finished making a small bulletin board for a guy friend of mine. I don't really like Britney Spears, but he's obsessed with her, so I got some of those cork squares at Wal-Mart, painted one black, and made three britney stencils on my computer. Much time and a very multi-colored me later and here we go.

Hit me, baby )

Anywho, I hope you all are having fun with your last minute Christmas crafting. Happy holidays!

The scarf itself isn't finished yet but I was pretty happy with the way the stencil turned out. It's the most complicated one I've ever done. Not perfect, but not bad. (The pic looks slanted, I know - it just wasn't straight on the scanner.)

please help me, craft girls!

okay, i posted earlier about making a lamp out of a coffee pot, and the wonderful [livejournal.com profile] missavis directed me to this page. so i now have all of my supplies and i'm ready to go... but i don't know how to drill holes in china. won't it shatter and leave me with a broken heart? on the instructions (the ones i just linked to) they suggest getting a professional to do it. what, a professional hole-driller? so i was just wondering if any of you have had any experience with drilling holes in china pieces, or know where i can have this sort of thing done, or know how to do it yourself & with what... so if any of you fit that description, pleeeeease share the wisdom. you'll be saving my life. thank you sooo much!

(yes, i'm starting a psychotic craft project a few days before christmas. i'm cool like that. hahaha)

omg. i know, two new posts in one night!

how much does everyone love the great marker god Sharpie?!

I buy them as presents for my Sharpie-stealing fiance' and this newest batch came with one of those metallic ones. HOLY CRAP THEY RULE!!!

So much friendlier than the oh-so shakey paint-pens... *sigh*

Just wanted to give props to my favourite marking-utensil, and I'm sure everyone here will agree...

And for the large & stinky marking needs... KING SIZE! :)

Does anyone know where I could get some cheap colored vinyl? I've gone crazy in all the decent thrift stores around here, and picked up some really awesome black records, but for this project I'm planning I'd really like to have some pretty colored vinyls.
Thanks in advance:)

Hi everyone,

I decided I wanted to do a ragging off technique on my ceiling for a sort of Old World look...and now I need to fix some mistakes.

I obviously didn't follow the instructions, and didn't do a semi gloss as the base as suggested, just did the second color over the original flat ceiling paint. Now I'm left with definite lines from the roller where the sections meet. They soaked up the paint too fast to do the ragging in time.

What can I do to minimize these lines before I go on to repaint the whole ceiling? Can I use a primer over them and refaux? Or would that make it worse?

I'm wanting to make a couple of small gifts for my partner's kids. The girl is easy -- I'm going to make a bar of soap and maybe decorate a penguin's tin for her to keep ponytail holders in.

But I'm getting stuck for what to make for the boy. He's 12, an average kid -- not too into sports, likes playing video games and watching tv. I don't think he'd appreciate the soap as much, nor can I think of anything he'd want to keep in a little tin. We talked about giving him a mix cd, but that's dissatisfying -- I feel like I'm not being as crafty for him as I am for her.

Anyone have a suggestion?

Frame Art

I love decorating envelopes, and have been sending things out a bit frequently lately, so I've been engaging in this more. A few days ago I made a decoration with a Jam (the band) theme, but thought it was too great to send through the mail, so I made it into a framed piece of art.

Here it is: )

my friend's got this teddy bear she wants to put a child's name on, below "My first Christmas" which is already on the tummy. the bear is made of that SUPER soft baby fabric, so puffy fabric paint is outof the question. short of embroidering it on my machine, do you have any other suggestions?

thanks!

sorry to bother everyone again, this IS to open a craft shop.

if i register with godaddy.com, they're the only cheapo company that gives me the option to have "private registration" for 9 extra dollars so that my personal informaiton is not in the WHOIS directory. if i opt out of that, will i get email/phone/mail spam till kingdom come? i tried doing a search on what whois is, but it doesn't tell me that it can be use for spamming....

I'm leaving on a flight to San Diego tonight and I want to knit on the plane. Will they confiscate plastic knitting needles? They're definitely not sharp but my mom says they will be taken...

I found this pattern for knitting mittens:
http://knitty.com/ISSUEfall02/PATTbroadstreet.html
and it's the kind of thing i'm looking for, but I can't knit plain straight rows very well, let alone using multiple needles or anything like that.
Does anyone know of any simpler patterns for mittens like that, either knitted or crocheted?

Okay, i finished all my projects. Included in here are pictures of my paint job that i did a few weeks ago, along with my new flooring.

Scarves!!!

[identity profile] taraist.livejournal.com
I just finished these two plain, garter-stitched, striped scarves for my cousins.

observe! )

Now, my mom wants me to knit a scarf for her.. She already picked out the yarn and bought it (lion brand homespun in prairie). My mom is really into HIGH FASHION.. (well, thats what it seems like to little ol' me; my wardrobe is almost exclusivly thrifted) oh and she throws names around like coach, loui faton? ummm i cant remember anymore

well i digress..

she told me she read that loosly knitted homespun scarves are in style. So i have this yarn and size 10 1/2 needles.

i was thinking about doing a stockinette stitch and then at the end, dropping every other stitch and then pulling for that very loose effect.. i don't know if this is what she had in mind.. any tips?

rice & lavendar neck wraps, marble magnets, potholders, and chocolate spoons! i'm so proud of the chocolate spoons because they came out perfect and i was nervous about making them because i'm a total wreck in the kitchen, i screw up everything, but these came out amazing! i worked so hard on everything and it feels good to look at everything and see how successfull it was. ahh :)

1. Can you use essential oils in gel candles, or do you really have to use the murky (and kind of nasty smelling) scented oil they sell on the candle making isle of the craft store?

2. What's the best way to avoid bubbles with gel wax?

yeah i havent posted in forever and three days, but heres some bordom-induced funthings.

i took up knitting from a kit i bought at walmart in like october, and have been knitting scarves for all my friends and family.

what is a good guide for deciding a scarf length? namely for a 6" tall boy...

So tonight, while shopping for records at the thrift store I came across Oklahoma. Thinking I had scored as a great record for a record bowl, I pulled it out and it clear RED vinyl. I was even more excited.

Then I got home.

Ugh, have any of you had more trouble with clear coloured vinyl then just regular black? I have. Luckily it softened and I was able to attempt it again, and it turned out better the second time. But it has a tendency to curl in, and wasn't as flexible as the black ones.

Wondering if anyone else has had the same problemo?
[identity profile] robots8myheart.livejournal.com
I've painted plates and other "dishware" before, but it was merely for decoration. Now I want to make my own custom dinner ware set, and I was wondering what the best kind of paint and sealant to use would be. This set is hopefully going to be used for serving food/nuking it..etc. So I don't want to poison my boyfriend:)
Any suggestions?
thanks a lot!

I need to stop posting dumb questions.. I'm sorry guys and girls:)

so i went out and bought some thriftstore records to try making journals from for christmas.. and have crocheted so many scarves my wrist is actually a bit achy ^.^

hehe, but it's worth it.. i've saved so much money this Christmas, and have produced quality gifts!

i'm going to my mom's office tomorrow to use her paper cutter to cut the paper + also the records...

the records.. the one on top is my favorite )

i think someone mentioned using a heavy-duty paper cutter to slice their records, but i can't find the post anywhere, nor in the FAQ. do you think this will work all right?

I'll definitely post pictures of scarves, etc. when i install the upload software onto the computer ^.^

**[edit]**
i'm just posting scarves for now.. i have pictures of a lot of things (i just now installed the software to upload pictures) so..

My pride and joy this holiday season are these little books. There are 6 books in all. Each page has a photo of Maya and a description of what she was doing at that age. To personallize them a bit each one has a dedication on the inside cover and a thank you note at the end from Maya, my baby. Each page was cut out (I broke down and bought a paper cutter at the end) and laminated with clear contact paper. I used stickers to decorate the text pages a bit. It took me about 2 weeks to finish these puppies. The only thing I would do differently next time is explore different types of bindings. I didn't want them to be really tightly bound so that my grandmas couldn't easily open them to read. The rings were a little too big, but they were the smallest I could find. I didn't look very hard though, just at Walmart.

Here is a heartfelt stocking stuffer I made for my husband:

I made the covers with shrinky-dink plastic. Then accordian folded paper to fit inside, glued it to the plastic and wrote on it 25 reasons why I love him. Sorry for the poor quality of some of the pics, it's hard not to get a glare with the plastic. On the back plastic I punched two holes in it before I shrunk it and then threaded the ribbon through and glued the paper over the ribbon on the inside to keep it in place. It was easy and fun to remember all the many reasons he melts my heart. :)

I have a translucent dark blue inflatable chair, but no room to keep it blown up. I was hoping maybe there'd be something crafty to do with the material [plastic/vinyl]? Skirts and bags are all I can think of, but they're not two things I need or want... any other suggestions as to what else I can do with it so I don't have to throw it out would be hugely appreciated, thanks in advance!

Started working on making some Christmas presents. For my best friend's mom, my boyfriend's mom, his 2 grandmas, and great grandma, I'm making gift baskets of home made peppermint bark, a mug, hot cocoa/lemon/cinnamon spoons I'm gonna make, home made lollipops, and gift box shaped sugar cubes that I made.
