Lampshades

Does anyone have any experience with making lampshades from scratch, rather than covering one? I got a book on it from the library, but it doesn't seem to care much about safety hazards. Apparently, any kind of paper or fabric is okay, but I'm still wary. Is there any sort of fire retardant I should use, or is it really as safe and simple as the book makes it seem?

very vague, but i moved and don't have this bookmarked on my computer anymore!

this was two differant necklaces at one time. i broke a couple beads on one and i still wore the other, but i sacrificed it for a greater cause.
i still have to touch up a couple of the....black things because i spray painted them and some of it chipped when i was wiring them. i wish i cuould have gotten a better picture of the details, but it's kind of hard...
i also made a pair of earrings, but they aren't atht special so no picture will be provided. and i can't be assed to take out the one's i'm wearing now to show you.

I haven't posted here in a terribly long time. This time, I post with pictures, not questions.
Fun with a hunk of wood, acrylic paint, and something to carve with. )

this is SO craft related! i want a mannequin for my CRAFT shop. someone, many months ago, posted a picture of their mannequin. i think it was a boy with his mouth totally agape. does anyone know what that line of mannequin's was called? i remember finding so many on ebay, and i think i wanted to buy one of their female mannequins. but now i can't find them anymore!

so in an attempt to not get this post pulled for not being craft-related:

here is a craft! )

Smocking

Does anyone have any first hand experience with smocking?
I need some tips hints and tricks = I've designed 3 outfits that all have some sort of smocking/textured fabric detail on them and none of the (really old) books I've borrowed are much help

otherwise, anyone know what rats tail braid and russian braid are, or has anyone ever tried puttting cord behind fabric to get it all bumpy and textured? (i haven't but will try soon enough and post pictures on how it goes)

thanks in advanced people :)

What with everyone's wonderful Harry Potter creations, such as snarfywarning's adorable snitch and civil's beautiful dolls- I've been itching to create something having to do with "my house," Hufflepuff. Any ideas for a beginning crafter? I was considering a scarf but then remembered my terrible luck with knitting lol. The sewing machine is still on the fritz, so choices are limited. Thanks my freaky darlings! ^_^

For our month-iversary, I'm (hopefully) giving my boyfriend a book full of the lyrics and such that he has wirtten for the past couple years.
That is, if I can find out how to put the pages I've made into the book cover I've bought.

I've got this old hardcover music theory textbook, and though I know how to get the pages out, I don't know how exactly to get my pages in.
Any help?

Ok, I'm moving in a month into a two bedroom apt with my best friend. I want my room to have a movie star feel. I want lots of pink. Any other suggestion. I can sew a bit and I have a sewing machine. I also love Marilyn and Audrey.

What with clinical, and mentorship, and graduating, and moving to a whole new province, I haven't really done much crafty since about January. So I was kinda missing it, and I found which box I put (some of) my hooks.

Ergo, hats! )

Each took an afternoon to make, including interruptions, from the pattern here. The blue is from the basic pattern, and the tan is from the twin stitch variation.

I looked thru the memories and didn't really see anything that suited this...
My friends and I were thinking of selling some things at our local flea market...just for the heck of it...and I was wondering what you all go and look for when you go. Like what are your favorite items?

Me....I love beads. Whenever I go to the flea market I look for beads. I look and find things made out of beads that I can take apart and use. Heh heh

As for crocheting, do crocheted items go over real well there?
My friend is getting married and we are trying to get some money to buy her "skanky" stuff from our local porn shop...heh heh
God bless friends eh?

Also, we are all in college and don't like to work (hey I am honest), so that is why we are hoping to make some things and sell a little to make some extra spending cash.

I have been crocheting like a fiend lately. My mom and I are making a afghan together. I make the roses and the leaves and she adds the white part to make it a sqaure. She says she is making it for my "hopeless chest". *giggles* It is the first ever project we have done together. I like the way it is coming along. I tried to take a picture of it, but my camera sucks and it did not come out good. Sorry

Sorry if this is a stupid question -

I have some dupioni fabric, green with a shot of silver, and I'm wondering if there is a rule about its direction or nap like that of velvet. Is there an incorrect way to cut it or do I just need to make sure the whole garment is the same direction regardless of the nap? It looks the same to me no matter what angle I view. Thank you!

I didn't know where else to post this, but i figured here would be a good place, as i plan on making my own set of these cards when i find out the answer...

ANYWAY. On to the question:
Does anyone know what the set of cards are called, and they're in their 4th "generation" so to speak, and they have little platitutes on them. the newest set has orange on it, and they come in a little box.
They were made by some Brian something or other musician, and his artist friend.
"The O______ P_______" i think they were called....*shakes head* sorry this is so vague, but I honestly can't remember anything about it.

thanks, anyone who replies.

I bought run-of-the-mill cheap ($22) silver speakers from walgreens, which would plug into my walkman, so i wouldn't have to drag a sterio with me to this 4 week art program that i'm going to.
so.

i put on one layer of gesso, two layers of red paint, and individually glued on more than 2000 red sequins to the speakers. It took one week, I finished today!

mmm, yay for perfectionism.

I took a broken clock home from work yesterday to see if I could fix it. Not only was it broken, it was eight kinds of ugly. So I jazzed that baby up with a new coat of paint, new numbers, and a brand new face that Fred and Ginger would be proud of:

Huzzah!

I've checked in the memories but didnt quite find the answer to my question:

Say I were to start a business that sold crafty shirts with my own designs on them, but I didnt make the shirts myself, you know, I just bought a pack of Hanes plain white t-shirts or whatever and used those. Could I still sell them without having any issues, or would I have to pay Hanes or whatever company I bought the shirts from. I dont really see why I would, but I just want to make sure before I go out and do something.
