I looked through the memories and didn't find anything specifically about this, so it may just be common knowledge.

If I use regular acrylic craft paint to decorate shirts with, will it stay pretty, or will it start to crack and come off after a couple washes?

Hello. This is my first time every posting in here. But I'm looking for some help and guidance on some craft projects I've been meaning to start.

First of all, I want to make one of those bottlecap belts and use Pabst Blue Ribbon bottle caps. What kind of tool would I have to use to rivet the caps to the belt and where could I find such a tool?

Secondly, I have a pair of Dr. Scholl's sandals I want to paint. I've read that you use acrylic paint for the wooden soles. But the strap on my sandals are a hideous shade of brown. Would acrylic paint work on the leather straps or would I need some special sort of leather paint?

Thirdly, I've been collecting men's neckties for awhile. I'm going to hand sew them into a skirt and/or a purse. Any tips?

Thanks!!!

I checked the memories section but couldn't find anything related to this so I thought I would post and ask =]
For my halloween costume i'm doing a horror-yet-cutesy version of Alice in Wonderland. The pattern is actually a Chi from Chobits cosplay costume (blue puff sleeve dress, heart shaped ruffly apron) but anyway, what I wanted to know was does anyone have any ideas what I could use as fake blood that would wash out? I don't want to ruin/stain the dress unless I really have to cos I might reuse or sell it. The only really feasible idea i've had so far is ketchup but does anyone know of anything better? I did consider Ribena but I think that would stain.. A friend of mine said to spray it with scotchguard first and that would minimise staining whatever I used.
I'll also be 'bloodying up' my fake knives and some knee high socks but i'm not too bothered about them being stained permanently.. I'm thinking paint or that ready made fake blood but of course I am open to suggestions here too =] Also for my hands and arms.. What could I use for blood on those?

I guess I might end up using several different things for the blood here, but hopefully the overall effect will be good =]

I've been stumped on this one for a while...
I have lots of random little shells, pieces of glass, stones, etc. that I want to make into necklaces. Problem is, they don't have holes so I can't thread them onto a wire. How do I make those holes? Do I drill them? And with what? Or if I take them to a bead store, can they do it there for a small fee?

Thanks for the advice!

Anyone have ideas for crafts that can be done on an airplane??

I'm going to bring my knitting, but thought that could get boring on a 5 hour flight!

I'm open to all suggestions :)

peace silk

I'm thinking about raising silk worms so that I can spin my own silk from their cocoons.  The silk I'm interested in making is called Peace Silk.  You don't have to kill the moth pupa to make it. They get to live out their lifecycle and you still get the silk :)

Has anyone done this before?  I've been reading about it and researching it and evidently, the silk is really awesome and the spun yarn is really soft and simple to dye.

I've always wanted to try this, but killing the moths has always held me back.  With peace silk the mass murder isn't necessary and the adult moths are flightless, don't eat and only live for a week. During that week, they mate and lay more eggs which are the "seeds" for your next silk harvest.

I went to http://www.aurorasilk.com/raisesilk/index.shtml and read through the tutorial, but I'm still looking for first person accounts.

I want to sew myself a pirate coat. Not for Halloween or anything, though I may end up wearing it for Halloween also. The thing is, I don't want it to look stereotypically piratey--this means no "Cap'n Hook Red" or "Barbossa Black" or navy blue. I want a color or a style of fabric that doesn't look traditionally piratey, but will exude an aura of pirate-ness when sewn into pirate coat shape with the sleeves and buttons and ruffles and all that good stuff added. Does that make sense?

The one idea I had already was pinstriped fabric, or maybe bright yellow, but I can't really wear yellow because it makes me look green. So um, what would YOU do in this situation?

My second question is this. My mom offered to get me as much specialty yarn as I want for my birthday present, as long as it's for one specific project. (I can't just stock up on mohair or whatever.) I'm in a complete knitting/crocheting block situation right now and can't think of what the heck I'd want to make, plus I'm a total Red Heart and Lion Brand chick and have never knitted with anything more posh than Homespun. (Plus I don't want to completely break the bank. I've seen knitting kits in yarn catalogs that will give you enough specialty yarn to make like a poncho, but the kit costs $700 or something! blah)

So, what projects benefit especially from specialty yarn? What do you like to knit with? What yarn do you swear by for what projects?
I will probably crosspost this to [livejournal.com profile] knitting but for now I wanted to ask here. Thanks everyone!

oook, i have a question.

so one night i must've been on something, because i decided to BEDAZZLE my cons with rhinestones and tacky glue. even while gluing them on i knew this was stupid and that they couldn't stand a few days of walkin around (they didn't--several stones have fallen off).

so my question is, do any of you know of a good, strong glue that can adhere to both rhinestones and canvas? i hafta be able to walk in them (and so the glue should be flexible so the stones don't pop off when i put the shoosies on).

thanks a bushel and a peck.

and so this thing aint all texty-like, i made this for my friend:
she's just crazy about tiffany's. )

Apparently having the worst cold of my life has made me really creative. I saw a card similar to this on Carol Duvall this morning. Except like nearly everything on that show it was ugly and tacky. So, I modified.

I used to gold card and turned it into a pocket. It has two folded copper colored sides that you can't see in the picture. I stamped the matte gold card with a Kanji background stamp in black and embossed it with gold. Over that is a piece of gold leaf origami paper. It's topped with a sueded paper stamped with a pair of dragonflys that have been embossed in black and colored in using gel pens.

The insert has a stamped chinese banner tab to pull it out of the pocket. It's double embossed in gold then covered in UTEE. The insert is cardstock covered in fine rice paper. It's accentuated with fibers, a chinese coin, and an embossed stamp in the lower left corned. It's trimmed out with a gold leaf pen.

I stamped the back of the envelope with the same seal and embossed it in gold.

I made a post earlier about piping and I was so impatient that I was patient, if that makes any sense. I ended up just handsewing on piping I made myself (go me!) instead of running to the store. Also changed the white buttons to nifty aqua colored ones. Here are the results:

and one more )

Will definitely pick up Unique Stitch anyway next time I go to the store and some more jackets from the thrift store to breathe life into. This is addicting. Thanks for such kind and helpful responses - definitely such a nice break from all the egos and attitudes.

A new version of something on CRAFTSTER, I had originally made these Astrology pendants out of Shrinky-Dinks. With these newer ones, I didn't feel like messing with an X-acto knife to cut out the extra, so I just colored in the rest. Also, no hole wasn't "punched" in before baking, so they're basically right now just "coins", but They may make good pins.

is it possible to permanently dye or paint rubber? specifically the soles of converse type shoes. i've acquired some fakey ones, and they're not the greatest. i'm planning to dye the canvas, but i thought the coolest thing ever would be if i could get the rubber to go (and stay) a really vibrant colour, like pink or red.

i suppose i could use permanent markers, but i was thinking something that'd look a little more professional.

and so this isn't a text-only post, check out my pimpy skirt reconstruction )

Just a question: what are some ways to put holes in buttons? I'm making button jewelry... necklaces and earrings and the like. Sounds weird, this I know. Any help is greatly appreciated. :D

This is annoying me.

I just opened my package of e6000 glue and read the directions.
I noticed something but couldn't figure out what the hell it was there for. Does anyone know why the directions have a heart and weird arrow printed over them?

Also, how bad does this stuff actually smell, is it bedroom useage safe?

i've just been invited to a baby shower, so i have to put my cookbook/scrapbook project on hold for awhile. upon looking at the memories i think i came up with a good baby shower gift idea. i'm going to buy a baby tub and fill it up with baby bath time stuff. you know, baby poweder, shampoo, rubber duckies, wipes, soap, wash clothes (there was a good link in the memories on how to make wash cloth animal puppets, so i'll do that .) i was just wondering a couple things:

can you guys think of anything else that could go along with this?

and i also plan on getting the mom to be some bath/spa related stuff. i'd like to put 'em in a little bag/pouch that i would like to atempt to make out of hemp. so i was wondering if any of you knew of any websites that instruct you how to do so. i tried yahooing it, but nothing helpful came up. can i just use the hemp twine/rope to crochet one, like i would with regular yarn? any help with be greatly appreciated. thanks guys!

I found some old Atari game cartridges. On several, the stickers fell off over time. I wanted to design new graphics for them and give them as gifts to some of my gaming/gamer friends. i've thought of two ways to do this: decoupage (though i'm not sure modge podge will adhere to this plastic, or computer designed graphics converted into stickers (though i have no clue how to do such a conversion)

so i need to know:
1. if it will decoupage
2. how to make a sticker from a printout
3. if there's a better way that i just didn't think of

thanks in advance!
