I know that
weddedblog who is a part of the
craftgrrl community
posted a tutorial on how to make tsumami flowers for kanzashi already, but I figured that might have awakened an interest in the traditional art for some of you. For those of you who don't speak Japanese, "tsumami" is "pinching," and refers to the way of folding fabric to make petals for the flowers that adorn the kanzashi, or hair pins.
The
Tokyo Tourism Info website has many videos
introducing traditional Japanese crafts (I haven't investigated all of them to see if they're all tutorials). The videos pertaining to tsumami are
here. They are all in Japanese, but they are pretty detailed.
1) The first video shows how the silk for the flowers is dyed and cut.
2) The second video shows how the petals are folded. It shows three different styles, two are the "square-pinching" style which is your typical pointed petal, and one is the "round-pinching." It also starts to show the process of building the support structures for the kanzashi. (Apparently the stuff he spreads on the board to hold the petals is a type of starch. My Japanese isn't really good enough to work out the details, though. I'm sure glue would work, too.)
3) The third video shows the artist making a crane, flowers, and an arrow out of the petals he made. The support structures just seem to be cardboard and fabric covered wire, so far. Then it's all fastened together into one really huge kanzashi. I'm assuming it's for a wedding.
4) This video shows the details of the kanzashi made in the previous video and an ornate comb. Then they show you how to make a kusudama (ball). The kusudama seems to be mounted on a styrofoam ball.
5) The last video shows a maiko (or a woman dressed like a maiko) wearing some pink kanzashi. Then you see another artist make a truly huge phoenix. I'm not quite sure how he's going to get that on someone's head.
What it doesn't seem to show is how to finish off the backs! I guess you just make sure the backs don't show.
I found that in order to view these videos, I had to right-click and choose "save target as." They simply wouldn't stream for me. If you can, I would try to save the 300k broadband versions, as the 56k narrowband versions are pretty blurry.
I'm already trying to figure out how to make things other than just flowers with tsumami! I hope you enjoy the videos as much as I did.
