bermuda bag

Nov. 5th, 2003 04:06 am

i bought a sewing machine yesterday (see my craftgrrl post here). i just wanted to share the first thing i made with it, a bermuda bag cover. i traced the outline of the original bag that was on it and sort of went from there. a lot of my stitching is messed up cuz i didn't have pins, so when i was making a hem around it it kind of went wonky, but i'm pretty satisfied being that it's the first thing i ever made on a sewing machine unassisted. i love the 4-step buttonhole feature my machine has! i would have been totally lost and not knowing how to make a buttonhole without it.

the best part is that the bermuda bag is apparently the exact size of a flat quarter! i totally lucked out. i think i'm going to make some more bag covers before i try to tackle the skirt and dress projects i have in mind.

(and yes, it is 4 am.)

i want to make a nick cave doll.
everyone i've done so far has looked about like this )

that one is pretty detailed and most just have button eyes and embriodered mouths now. no nose or naything. just sewn onto a flat head.
but i want to expirement with a differant structure for the head and face without getting very complicated because the rest of the doll is going to be gangely and really simple. just straight arms and legs (probably sewn into the seams on the torso).
any suggestions?

shirt necks

i'm such a sewing fiend (sp??) but i refuse to use patterns.

my only problem is, i don't know how to do shirt necks - if i cut out a long strip and sew it on folded over, it doesn't really work if you know what i mean....

maybe there's a free pattern online somewhere that will give me an idea of what i'm supposed to do?

I just made the coolest Frida Kahlo shirt with an inkjet transfer. I want to wear it a lot, but that means I'm going to have to wash it a lot, too. Any tips on getting it to last?
[identity profile] saisha.livejournal.com
Finally. I went to Michaels yesterday to get a few supplies for Christmas. I knew I wanted to turn the kids sports buttons (the one all the mom's wear at the games) into their Christmas ornaments this year, but didn't know how I was going to do that. Well I found some nifty flat ceramic ornaments that were begging to be decorated. Afterall that's their point. Plain, white, boring. So I ripped out the pin part from the back, attached the bottons with cement glue and voila! ornaments. I wrote their names, team names, and the year on the back. A little cording around the button and I've got kickass ornaments. I'm super pleased. I also picked up some irradescent glass paint so I can make a super awesome fish vase for Rosie's Beta fish. so yay! crafty goodness.

I've got laods and loads of washing to do. Wonder what kind fo loot I'll find in pockets this time. I'm guessing I find a buttload of candy wrappers. Maybe some more trash. That's usually all I find. I'm waiting till the day I find a $20 and a little note from Jason saying "Thanks for doing my laundry" or something nice like that.

Anyhow, that's about it. I've really gotta get the laundry sorted and started. See ya.

QUILT DRAMA!

I swear to god, I almost had a panic attack about my quilt last night. I wanted to finish it on Monday, and now it is Wednesday and and I have accomplished nothing. NOTHING! I need to get it done by Saturday, and I have a PROBLEM. The fabric I was gonna do the edges with is a gorgeous teal velvet. I thought I had enough but yesterday I discovered that I am about five inches short. I have a couple options here. I could:
a) just sew the back on with no edge and be done with it. This would be fast and easy but would probably look bad and make me unhappy with the whole project.
b) put a different fabric on the corners of the edge, perhaps in an interesting shape. The other fabric I have is purple cotton/poly blend with shiny gold swirls. I think this would look pretty cool, even if I just did the top two corners instead of all four, but it would be much more complicated than the other two options.
c) make the edge narrower than originally planned and use the scraps to make it long enough. As far as easiness goes, this option is sort of in the middle. I am worried that adding in little bits of fabric would look like ass though.

Agh. I am in a serious bind here. What do you all think I should do? One good thing about this dilemma- I am finally going to get over my sewing machine phobia, because I need to get this done NOW.

Target had two pairs of acrylic/poly/spandx knit gloves, two pairs for $1.50! They're called "Magic Gloves" ... *shrugs*. Anyway, I bought them to wear when I work outside as an outdoor vendor during a local winter festival, but I have to handle money--tough when you're wearing knit gloves--so I want to cut the fingertips off at least the thumb and first two fingers.

How can I do that without the gloves fraying? Does anyone know if fray check will work? I don't want to unravel while I'm working ... =( at least, I don't want my gloves to unravel! Suggestions are loved!

Here are three charms/pendants I made last night. The base metal is pewter (melted a block of pewter and dripped them on a stone surface till I got the nice lil shapes and sizes), but then I did the "technique" on it that I've been experimenting with. Shh tis a secret ;)
It's a HUGE picture, FYI.

Okay, because everyone else is doing it... Here is the halloween costume I made. It consists of a giant skirt that I pinned fake flowers and scarves on to, a slip top i pinned to droop like icing and an old hat I pinned fake flowers to. Okay, not so crafty, but I love how it turned out. OOh, I made the earrings... Anyway. I went as A WEDDING CAKE! )

Hey everybody, I was just wondering if you all could help me out with some ideas. I have a bunch of jars (salsa, cheese, applesauce, ect) that I like to store other products in (sugars, baking powders, ect). I was wondering if you all had some suggestions on how I could decorate the lids? I was thinking about just painting them, but I am not sure what kind of paint (and sealant) to use that won't chip off or wash off in the dishwasher. I have a country/chicken/rooster thing happening in my kitchen (nothing but class and tact with me!) and was hoping for cutesie ideas for decorating the lids and now maybe even the jars them selves.

Also, because I am a cheap butt... I buy my cutting boards at the dollar store. I really love the wood ones, but they split when they get overly wet. Is there a sealant that will not take away from the country wood look, won't effect food, and will keep the wood from splitting in water?

Thank you all for your help. :)

I've looked on the FAQ section and found a lot of info on soap crafting and whatnot.. but nothing much about bath salts..
I have like no money for Christmas this year and since it's coming up I thought I'd get a head start on some things. My famly has GROWN in the past year since both my parents remarried.. so I was thinking for all the chicks in the family I would make little things of soaps, lotion, bath salts and whatnot..
But I have a question about salts. I saw a kit at Hobby Lobby or something that basically looked like some epsom salt and fragrance oil.. for like $20.. when a big bag of salt is like >$2 heh. Soooo does anyone have any suggestions, things I could add.. recipes.. I'm open to anything really. Thanks :D

a couple days, maybe weeks ago someone posted a picture of a journal made of out of a record cover. Does anyone have a link to that post? I can't seem to find it.
Also, does anyone have directions on how to do it?
thanks

sorry 'bout these pics, the photographer was outside in the dark. i tried to lighten them a little bit to show the big curly horniness --they're red/black/copper, unfortunately they don't seem to want to fit properly into just one picture. they're big, did i mention? ;P
i'll get some more later.

would it be a good idea to buy one of those 'learn to knit' kits that have you make like...a scarf and a hat. it gives you all the yarn, needles, detailed info.

cuz. well. ive never knitted, ever. my great gramma crochets alot, but shes too old to teach me now. and i kind of want to learn to knit. but i dunno where to even start, because im a total moron. i need like. detailed instructions when i start something like that.
um. oh. i did knit at one point i think. it was some barbie knitting kit that had plastic loops and all this drama.
i think i made a tube that was an inch tall and claimed it was a dress =/

anyway. any info you have on starting out knitting and the best way to go about it would be nice. and. i know NOTHING. to me its sticks and yarn =/

I went on a clothes making spree quite a while back and only finally got time to do myself a little photo shoot of them.

Crazy top )
It was just a plain (cheap)long sleeve black top which was a little short to be wearing with my (ever so fashionable) chubby tummy. So I hacked of the sleeves and snazzed it up a bit. I reckon it looks prety fancy now.

Denim skirt and spotty top )
The spotty top was a baggy old lady shirt that I got a Thrift (eqivilancy) store. Again a bit of hacking and re sewing and it's looking quite stylish (and sexy with that neckline that gives a new meaning to "how low can you go"!)
A week later I saw an identical shirt in a sote... same lace neckline and all. I was so pissed. That was my design. Damnit!!
Now talk about hack check out the denim skirt. Boy do I get a lot of comments of this. Plus it was so fun to make cause you can't actually screw it up!! Yeahaw
[identity profile] festinalente.livejournal.com
hey I'm just starting a huge craft project, and I'm wondering if any of you have used fabric paint on felt and if it does okay in the washing machine. In my project I will actually be using a paintbrush to paint designs onto the felt (just like painting on canvas). I looked in the memories section, but didn't find anything - and I'm very new to this "crafting" genre.

Thanks in advance for your help. :)

here it is + link to my other stuff )

hello everyone!
i'm gearing up to make a book purse, and i went to pat catans and got some magnets to clamp the top shut. but... they're really really strong magnets. like, they will stick to each other on the opposite sides of my finger. my question is, if i use 4 of these, on each corner of the book cover, would they mess with my debit card? i can always use my super strong magnets for marble magnets or such. what are your opinions?

My Frida shirt

I have this awesome grey T-shirt that I live in -- you know, the kind that fits just right and you wear it until it's pretty much threadbare... but I teach art in school and got some little paint spots on it that never fully washed out, so I wanted to do something with it so I can wear it to school without feeling like a slob. And I adore Frida Kahlo... soooooo... here ya go. :)

I actually ordered a Frida shirt from an online retailer but it's forever getting here. I might wind up like [livejournal.com profile] andshedied's friend and have one for every day of the week. LOL!!! Maybe I'll grow a unibrow while I'm at it. ;)

The quote says, "Painting completed my life. -- Frida Kahlo" in a funky handwritting-style font. The lettering didn't transfer well, but the photo looks great.

any ideas on posting poster on walls using some kind of adhesive that won't ruin your walls/paint? would starch work?
[identity profile] addwag.livejournal.com
I posted this earlier but realized I asked the wrong way.

I am interested in packaging ideas for my portfolio which I am submitting to grad schools--

it consist of a CD, slides, CV, artist statement-- I really don't want to have to submit it in the normal way and would like something more creative (however end product must fit into an 8.5 x 11 folder) and am really lacking for cool creative ideas--

anyone suggestions? pictures? links? books?
