hi everyone. i'm new to the list and i'm going to post some random projects i've been doing on the train lately.

i think it's sort of funny that i am crocheting little cats all of a sudden. not very me, a little more cute-sy than the things i usually make. the thing is--i have a ton of yarn in the closet that i want to use up, and there hasn't been a need to make more hats (which can be viewed on my web site, email me to ask where it is). i've been dying to do some drawing or painting, but haven't had any time between riding the subway to and from work, and actually sitting at work all day. these animals have been a little more creative than the usual crocheting AND easy to do on the train to work.

i'm looking for feedback on how to get better photos, if anyone has any hints (about lighting, backdrops, quality). i'm using a 4 mp canon digital camera with a flash and the photos are still looking off.

this guy is about 16 inches tall. i made him with mohair blend yarn. he's a little holey, so some of the fiberfill is coming through

Howdy folks - love this community...

Anyway, I'm a fairly competent knitter of very pretty squares, and I'm making a dishcloth to go in my mother's Christmas stocking (sounds bland, I know, but there's a story there)...I'm designing my own pattern because I want it to be something specific and meaningful, about as meaningful as a dishcloth should ever be. My problem is, my mother only really uses white dishcloths because they can be easily bleached. So I need a way of creating a picture AND readable words on a big white cotton square. Is just knit/purl going to cut it, or will I have to get tricky?

I made this hat today for myself- took me two hours.

I asked you guys how to put in a zipper yesterday on a skirt I was making. So I went out and bought a invisible zipper and put it in and it turned out quite nice..except for a tiny little bump at the bottom of the zipper (oh well!)

But now the skirt is made and I was planning on wearing it to my graduation from college on Sunday.  But I think that it looks a little blah.  Kinda business-ey.  Here is a pic.

What could I do to spice it up a bit?  Make it a little bit more girly or something.  I was thinking of putting a little flower on it somewhere..but I'm not sure.  Anyone have any suggestions?

Hola, girls and boys!
I recently found my bathroom/medicine cabinet overflooded with makeup that I have collected over the years.
Since I'm too lazy to go downtown to buy one, and pretty much don't have any money for it either, I decided that I want to sew a makeup bag/pouch/whateveryouwannacallit.

Now, I searched through Craftster, and found this OH SO LOVELY makeup pouch!

Me being the newbie that I am, I ofcourse see that this probably a pretty easy thing to do, but it would still be lovely if anyone knew of a pattern or a tutorial on how to make this.

Thanks bunches, my little lovelies!

Hey guys!

I'm working on an AOL box. Here's what I got so far. I haven't decided about the outside. I'm thinking rhinestones with the glue gun and some ribbon. Maybe some collaging. Oh, and where do you buy that stuff...it's for decoupaging...? I just blanked on the name. Mooo...? Something with an M, maybe. Or not.

Anyway, pictures of my aol box.

Hey kids,

For a project I'm about to do, I need to make a little Slimey out of clay. Slimey is Oscar the Grouch's worm-friend from Sesame Street, remember? This seems like it would be simple enough to do... so, what sort of clay would you recommend I use? And, is there any sort of baking tips for clay that I should know about so that he comes out all right? Thank!

A few pictures of Slimey )

Yep. I got the enough guts to paint and trim my expensive Riria classmates doll from Japan. Is there a special sealer that barbie doll restorers use over painted areas in order to ensure they don't scratch off?

I've knitted through most of a ribbed scarf but it was taking too long and I really just wanted to make this hat, so when I got the K2P2 thing down, I started making it. It was kind of complicated, but a very fun challenge that convinces me that knitting is fun and I need to do it more. I tucked my bangs for all but one picture just to show the hat better (sorry crappy webcam pics) and I included the original hat picture so you can see the texture, since I did mine in black and threaded a pink ribbon through the top so I could tie it on. The pattern is from headhuggers.org, a site of patterns for making hats for chemo patients. Since I was very selfish and made it just for me, I'll be making the next hat for headhuggers!

i'm making a snowflake fabric/painted cut out (applique?) thing (to put on the side of the bottom leg of a pair of light blue pants).

**

1. i printed out a snowflake stencil that i found on a free xmas stencil site (about.com?), the size is about 3 or 4 inches by the same.
2. i cut it out with space around the black lines of the stencil (try a circle shape).
3. i cut out a piece of white fabric, a tiny bit bigger than that.
4. i used elmer glue to paste the snowflake onto the piece of white fabric. i then turned the thing over, and painted white fabric paint on the other side, all over. after i got a good amount on it, i painted a little bit of glitter fabric paint over the white.
5. let dry over night.
6. next day, the paint is dry, and the whole thing is pliable. i turned it back over, and cut along the black lines of the snowflake stencil. once i cut it out, we have a nice glittery snowflake (on the other side).

i was going to apply it somehow to the very bottom of a pair of light blue pants, on the leg, on the side.
i just dont know how i'm going to do this yet. i have that bonding fabric, but i've never used it, and i'm not sure how. could i cut out another copy of the snowflake with that bonding fabric, and match it up with MY snowflake, and bond it on? how would i do that? any ideas, or other ideas?

dearest spinners.

today i was given the gift of a spinning wheel. however, i know not how to use said spinning wheel, nor what else i need to purchase for it. yes, i did look online, and yes, i did check out the FAQs, but i'm not really getting it. so. what i'm asking is, how on earth do i use this? can i buy fiber and etc. around philly or NYC? can i use the skanky pile of hair my housemate leaves in the bathtub for fiber?
also, below is the photo of la wheel.
check it before you wreck it )

Hi everyone-- I just did a big post about my latest stitching project -- with pictures! (and GNOME FEST!) Check it out in my LJ.

I made a few of these fellas as gifts last year, and made some more this year to help raise some $$ for the ole alma mater marching band. (highschool, that is.) Alas only two of them sold...they'll try again tommorow night at the Holiday concert-- wish them luck!

On the left we have the gentlemen preparing for their debut at the craft fair, on the right one of our models poses in his natural habitat: hanging on a Christmas tree.

Materials: Burnt out lightbulb, stiff brown felt, regular red felt, black glass paint (surely nail polish would have sufficed), orange toothpick chunk (colored with a Sharpie), fake snow stuff (last year it was just glitter), gold wire, glue gun, heavy duty super glue (for the nose), and love.

I'm new here, so Hi!

And I have a quick question. I want to make my dad a duct tape wallet for christmas. Lined in regular duct-tape, but with clear duct tape and Monty Python pictures on the outside. No big problem... But clear duct tape is $5.00 at Wal-mart, and I'm on a low budget. And I can't think of anything I'd possibly use the clear stuff for. So... any ideas? Even if it's not crafty and just an everyday sort of chore. Or is there something else I could use for the wallet?

So sorry... I'm sure new people come out of the woodwork for help during the holidays like crazy. I promise I'll post pics of stuff later.
Thanks!

i really really liked all the posting about holiday baking and so i looked around betty crocker for a few minutes. it's not really a craft, but it is handiwork and cuteness.

here's the recipe

at least you asked nicely.

whatever.

I keep seeing all this cool stuff that I would buy. Is there a LJ devoted to hiring crafters to make things for others? I'd love crocheted/knitted hats for the family in particular. Though there are other things that made me holler, 'Want!' Below are the cards I made last year, just so its not a text only post. Woo.

I want to make antlers for my puppy and turn her into a reindeer for her pictures with Santa on sunday, any suggestions how to do this?
[identity profile] cookiezs.livejournal.com
i dont understand, when you are knitting how do you accidentally make more stitches?? i started out with 40 stitches and ive only done about 6 rows and i have 44 stitches. are you not supposed to knit the last stitch? or what is it thats giving me these extra stitches?

thanks ahead of time =)

Sorry for the boring text-only and for not posting anything interesting in a few months.... BUT

I just wanted to say that when I walked into my local Jo-Ann's and scurried by the knitting whatnot, I saw this new extra spiffy "(A Jo-Ann's exclusive) Sensations Spectrum" which happens to be a "super bulky yarn for quick fashions" The yarn has to be like 1/4"-1/2" wide and is a wool/acrylic blend. unfortunately, two skeins were $12 or so, but it's so NIFTY, I just couldnt resist! I love chunky yarn and big fat needles!

I've been crocheting for about 10 years now, and quite a lot in the past year, but I keep seeing knit patterns and I want to try to make them, but I can't knit.

Does anyone know of any good books, or online tutorials that I could use to learn?

Thanks!

Ideas?

Sorry for this post. Please don't yell at me. )= If you don't like it, just delete it then I guess.

My teacher gave us a new project where we say 1 nice thing about each person in our class. We write down everyone's name and write down their compliments. After we write them down, she cuts them up and organizes them by person. So I would have my own stack of compliments from the other students in my class. She then gives the stack of compliments to random student in the class and that student is responsible for displaying the compliments in a unique way.

So my question is, how should I present it? I really want to make mine look great because I'm actually into this project. So please help me with ideaS? (=

edit: sorry i wasnt being clear. i'll just explain the part i have to do, i think that'll be simplier... the teacher is going to give me a bunch of comments about a person (another person in the class) that the class has written about them, and i'm supposed to make something to display it and make it look nice... or a nice way to give it to them like a present..

Hi!

I was wondering if there are any lovely ladies or gents who live in the Ann Arbor, MI area and have a button maker. If so, could I use it to make a couple of buttons?
Thanks a million!

Hi :) This is my first time posting.

I saw a purse on here a couple of days ago that was made in the style of these Margaret Nicole bags...they are so beautiful!

I have resolved to learn how to cable knit, and then attempt one as my Christmas vacation project. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on how to make it so that the handles are attached to the yarn on both ends...so "live stitches" are around both of the handles...at the beginning, and end. How do you think the bag is made...is it just like one piece folded in half, or are their side strips...or is it just folded in the bottom corners to give it dimension?

I'm analyzing it :) Here is a picture : Thanks!!
