Does anyone know where I could find purple snakeskin print fabric like this?

My hubby got a promotion and purchased some new, improved clothing, I hated to waste the old shirts, though-- they'd been thorough so much with us ;) So I'm making him a quilt for Christmas. It's made from three of the old favorite dress shirts and matching flannel. I also created an embroidered patch with my a cute (but tragicly boring) message and my handprint. I've never tried embroidery and I think I'd actually like to learn the right way to do it now.

I finally finished some new polymer resin pieces.

has anyone knit up a scarf using lionbrand woolease thick & quick?
i'm just wondering if two skeins will be enough to make a scarf.
it'll probably just be knit in stockinette or ribbed, no fringe, and nothing fancy since it's for the boyfriend.

thanks :)

i want to knit some cat blankets this month, mostly for the critters knitters' coalition (and you should too if you have the time---they also want crocheted, sewn, and quilted blankets), but i also want to make one for my kitten, mamie (see precious user icon).

the thing is, i want it to have a big letter "m" on it. and i can't find any patterns online, via google, that will tell me how to do that. maybe there's a way of making up the pattern myself, but i'm just not that sophisticated.

does anyone have any resources or ideas that could help?

thank you!!

(p.s. i'm cross-posting this to [livejournal.com profile] knitting).

This is what happens during the holiday season. I get inspired with a million ideas... for myself.

This is going to sound bizarre... but looking at all of these posts of peoples crafts where they have say... a living room or dining room in the background, is driving me insane. I live in a tiny apartment, it has no living room, dining room, or any sort of common area. The only two rooms that are mine are my bathroom and bedroom. I have the hardest time finding the space to cut or lay things out, and it's slowly beginning to drive me insane. Do any of you have any advice on how to work on large projects when you have extremely limited space? I need to begin working on a 6'x4' quilt within the next few weeks, and I have no idea how I'm going to be able to lay anything out!

Also, how much would you pay for a hat like this )? It's done mainly with slip stitches, so it took quite a while. And no, I'm not trying to sell it, I just have no idea how much to ask for something like that.

I need to make the waistline on some pantyhose (generic, sheer-to-waist) much lower. Any ideas on how to do this without completely destroying them? They are for a costume and need to go relatively undetected under panties and a bikini bottom, so if sewing them onto the bottoms is the only way to go, I am not unopposed to doing so.

Thank you in advance! :)

i know absolutely nothing about knitting, but id like to learn. can anyone recommend an easy to follow book to help me get started?
[identity profile] renee13.livejournal.com
I have a question, and forgive me if i missed it in the FAQ.
I'm looking for some cute knitting needles with stars or hearts or anything that's not a little plastic square at the top. I found one website where the needles have fancy glass beads or silver beads at the top and they sell for $50 a pair (!!!!), but i want something more...cute. There's really no other word for it. And way less expensive.

If anyone can help me i'd really appreciate it!

Thanks!!!!!

Here are some pins that I made with the buttons that I bought some days ago...

I was inspired by these http://www.cutxpaste.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=1&products_id=1092
but mine are surely cheaper, because they're not made with bakelite but just plain, poor, vintage buttons :-)

since im poor, im going to make this for my mom for christmas:

http://craftandfabriclinks.com/christmas/xmascat.html

i already bought stuffing and fabric (it has bluebonnets on it, since we're texans. haha) and i know pretty much how to do all of it, im going to have to sew it by hand though since we dont have a sewing machine, but thats not a problem.

but i do not know how to attach the limbs and head to the main body? once i have all the parts sewn together and stuffed, how do i discreetly stitch them to the main body? since they are going to be little pillows that i need to connect. if somebody can please take a look at that link, and explain to me in near-caveman like terms on how i would do that, id be super thankful!

I am in the process of trying
to get together a regular group
for a craft night on a regular
sort of basis. We did have one
previous gathering which did go
rather well, but was small in
size. I am putting together a
larger group for tomorrow, and
we're running to the craft store
tonight to stock up.

We have been trying to make some
sort of list as to what supplies
we'd like to have on hand in order
to occupy a diverse group of people
As much fun as running around the
stores will be shouting "OOOH!OOH!
one of these and these, the gallon
modge podge bottle, and all of the
colors these come in!!" I'd like
to not go broke this time around.

So... yes, what might you suggest
or would like to have on hand for
such a thing?

Help please.

I was in mid-stitch and my needle stopped moving up and down.
I can hear the motor inside working.
I'm curious, does anyone know if there are belts that occasionally slip inside the machine?
I'll be taking it into the shop regardless, this is simply curiosity.

Thanks in advance.

I heard a vicious rumour that knitted wool shrinks more lengthwise than widthwise when you felt it. HOWEVER... the scarf I'm going to felt is knitting horizontally, with looong (210 sts) vertical stripes, on circular needles. So should I expect it to shrink more widthwise, since the stitches run that way?

PROJECTS! what what!

half of my holiday scarves are done, and i want to feel accomplished, so i am posting them

i have been making these vinyl metrocard holders for awhile, but it is a huge pain in the *&& to sew them (by machine). the vinyl always sticks to the sewing machine foot, and no matter how well i pin it all together, the top piece gets dragged away from the bottom. so far, the best way i've come up with is to sew them with a leather needle, a wide stitch, and a piece of tissue paper over the vinyl. the tissue paper stops the sticking to the foot problem, and gets ripped off after i am done.

this works, but i am wondering if anyone knows of some other ways to sew vinyl that might save wasting a sheet of paper and would avoid the "blind" sewing that needs to be done through the paper (it's also hard to get the reminants of paper out of the stitching when it's ripped off). i have questioned whether the quality of my machine is making it harder (i have a lower end singer, but it doesn't seem to work differently when i use my friend's classic singer).

any hints would be greatly appreciated. thanks!

Has anyone colored their candles using melted crayons? I am almost out of red dye (I use little colored wax chips to color mine) and reeeally don't want to go all the way back to the candle supply place. Can I use crayons?

Hi I posted in August or September about looking for people to review items for an alternative fashion website. I got lots of replies and have picked all of the reviewers now but I wanted to post again because I am looking for a few things:

1) 2 or 3 people wishing to write articles.
2) people to submit tutorials for DiY items
3) people who would like to be interviewed. (to be interviewed the only requirement is that you are involved in the online alt-fashion world in some way...anything from someone who buys lots of clothes online, to someone who makes clothes from scratch, to someone who models)

If you're interested just reply here or email me at business (at) the-rockit-lab.com :o)

For those that didn't see the post I made back at the end of summer this is a 2nd version of The-Space-Lab.com. I lost the domain and instead of just putting the site on a new domain I have redesigned it and fixed it up. It is a lot bigger now and I am sure that it won't take more than a couple months to get back up to the 300 visitors a day I used to have. You don't get paid when you do these things but you can provide a link to your website or journal to promote yourself. The website doesn't make money btw, it's just a big directory of alt-fashion links and information.

[xposted to 3 other communities]

p.s. hope this is okay for this community...I figured there would be a few people in here who may be interested that I can't reach in other communities

i'm sorry if this is a stupid question and i definitely checked the memories and didn't see an answer but feel free to point me in the right direction in case i made a mistake which is ENTIRELY likely ; )

so being broke requires me to put my newly acquired knitting skills to christmas use. i'm making scarves for my mom, aunt and stepdad. now i am dumb and only bought one skein of each of the yarns. how many skeins does one typically need for a scarf? so i can go back to the store and buy more ASAP.

thanks a ton in advance!!

Does anyone know any techniques to distress pants?

When sewing...I have never ever followed a pattern before. I am 23 years old and never really seen a pattern...heh
I am so bad.
Anyways...I found this pattern:
http://www.simplicity.com/assets/9000/9000.jpg
and of course bought it.
My problem is...the sewing I can do..but having never worked witha pattern before, I don't know how to cut it out. I know..what a stupid question huh?

Do I cut out the pieces I need (from the pattern) and then pin them to my fabric and cut them out?
Do I have my fabric the wrong side up when cutting out the pattern..or the right side?

Also, this calls for a zipper. When I purchased the zipper from the store (convieniently located next door to my place of employment) the lady mentioned something about a zipper foot. Yeah...I have never heard of one. Apparently there is one on my mom's sewing machine though.
heh

Anyone got any tips for sewing a zipper on?

My biggest concern was actually with getting the pattern cut out...heh heh.
Don't laugh at me or else you will not see pictures of the awesomely cool finished bag.

Also..it called for a decorative zipper pull. All the ones in the fabric store were ugly...so could I make my own out of beads? It would work right?

Hi everyone! I'm loving all the ideas that get tossed around in this community and I've been working on some decoupage pieces which I will post very soon!

For now though, I'm really interested in alot of the candle & soap projects that people talk about. The problem is that I live in NYC and it's virtually impossible to find the right supplies.

We have no Joann's or Michaels. The closest thing to a craft store that I know of is "Pearl Paint" or the craft version of that on Lispenard Street.

My question is: Do any NYC crafty folks know of ANY good craft stores in the area - Manhattan, Brooklyn, The Bronx...anything!? I feel like I've looked everywhere!

If there aren't any real crafty craft stores, what about any stores that specialize in candle or soap making supplies - anything that anyone knows of?

Anything craft related ANYWHERE in the city? I'd be VERY grateful!

Thanks!

Wings!

Our winter sale for art club is next week, so I'm making a bunch of fleece hats to sell (I would take pictures, but I brought them all to school this morning).
I also decided to try making some wings after seeing this lovely pair made by [livejournal.com profile] _adagio.

I think they turned out rather nice, even though they're kinda small due to the fact that all I had was 18 gauge wire and that wouldn't hold it's shape if I made the wings bigger.

More pics behind the cut =) )

P.S.[livejournal.com profile] bonnytymepyrate has an awesome wing tutorial.
